‘Hard’ and ‘soft’ approaches in active transport promotion: analysis and mapping of government policies
Active transport can be promoted through approaches ranging from environmental changes (e.g. bike lanes or paths) to social programs (e.g. training and education). This study reviewed how local and state governments in Victoria, Australia–a region with low active transport participation–prioritise these different approaches. Using a PRISMA scoping review methodology, we identified 996 active transport policies within 123 strategic documents across transport, sustainability, and health sectors. Our findings suggest that governments in Victoria take a multifaceted approach to active transport promotion, comprising policies that achieve one of the three functions: (i) modifying the built environment (‘hard measures’; 45.1% of policies analysed); (ii) changing social attitudes, motivations and capabilities (‘soft measures’; 27.8%); and (iii) planning and decision-making within government to support active transport promotion (‘governance measures’; 24.6%). These three measures correspond to different policy categories in the behaviour change wheel framework, suggesting that each measure has specific functions for targeting active transport behaviours. This mix of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ approaches to active transport promotion was observed in local government policies across both metropolitan and regional areas of Victoria. Applying these methods to other areas will help determine the most effective combination of approaches for maximising active transport uptake.</p
Honey as an eDNA Reservoir: Detecting <i>Spiroplasma </i><i>apis</i> and <i>Spiroplasma </i><i>melliferum</i> in Australian Honey Bee Populations
Spiroplasma apis and Spiroplasma melliferum are often overlooked pathogens that harm honey bee health. This study used environmental DNA (eDNA) from honey to identify these pathogens. We amplified DNA from 135 honey samples across Australia using Spiroplasma–specific PCR primers. The results revealed a high prevalence of S. melliferum (70%) across Australia, in contrast to S. apis, which was detected in 13% of samples. The findings indicate that S. melliferum is widespread in Australia, potentially threatening honey bee health.</p

Boosting hospital falls prevention using health assistant staff alongside usual care
Objectives: Patient education is crucial for preventing hospital falls, yet workforce constraints can hinder targeted delivery. Utilising supervised healthcare assistants can enhance standard care. This study sought to understand factors that impact the feasibility of supplementing usual care with patient falls education delivered by supervised allied health assistants. Methods: In a qualitative study nested within a randomised controlled trial, focus groups and interviews were conducted with twelve health assistants, seven allied health professionals and two managers from the participating hospital. This elicited insights on barriers and facilitators to implementing workforce redesign to deliver tailored patient falls education. An inductive approach was used to thematically analyse the data. Results: Three key themes emerged: (i) it was feasible for health assistants to deliver hospital patient education; (ii) patients engaged with hospital falls prevention education delivered by assistants; (iii) hospital workforce redesign can be successfully implemented provided there is system-wide buy-in. Conclusions: Health assistants can be trained to successfully deliver hospital falls prevention education provided they have adequate supervision, training, and resources. Practice implications: Sustained implementation requires dedicated staffing hours for service delivery and staff education.</p
