    Australian teachers’ adoption of critical and creative thinking as curriculum

    Critical and creative thinking (CCT) was introduced as a General Capability in the Australian Curriculum in 2010, heralded as a call for more explicit teaching of CCT. This study was an online survey of 259 Australian teachers, exploring how they have adopted CCT as curriculum, including how confident they feel about this area of their teaching and what aspects of Australia’s CCT curriculum they teach and how. Most respondents believed it was important to teach CCT, but only a minority could recall professional learning in this area, and their confidence levels tended to be only moderate. The teachers were asked to provide examples of what they ‘say’ and ‘do’ in their teaching that best reflect their ‘typical’ approaches to teaching CCT. The examples indicated that they typically incorporated CCT into their teaching of other learning areas. However, the examples were mostly focused on only a few of the CCT General Capability sub-elements and were mostly of teachers providing students opportunities to engage in CCT skills, rather than explaining, modelling, scaffolding, or reinforcing the skills. For teachers to teach CCT more confidently and impactfully, improved professional learning and a more conducive CCT curriculum would assist.</p

    Benefits of Modelling Abundance for Rare Species Conservation: A Case Study With Multiple Birds Across One Million Hectares

    Aim: Many management programs that are based on the needs of rare or threatened species are ineffective because they fail to collect enough data to reliably estimate abundance and map distributions for their target species. Information that does exist for rare species is often based on presence‐only data, because it is difficult to collect sufficient data on abundance for such species. We targeted 10 rare bird species that were excluded from a recent study due to insufficient data. For these species, we aimed to (a) collect sufficient abundance data, (b) identify important locations and (c) estimate population sizes. Location: A large reserve system (~1 M‐ha) in south‐eastern Australia. Methods: We undertook intensive field surveys, using repeat area searches of 660 independent 25‐ha sites, totalling 2640 hours of surveys (2‐h surveys; two surveys per site). We used N‐mixture models to estimate abundance whilst accounting for imperfect detection. Results: This survey effort returned enough high‐quality data on nine rare bird species to identify important locations and estimate their population sizes. To illustrate potential applications of mapped important locations, we used our results to assess the likely impact of a planned burn program in part of the study region. We identified planned burns that are likely to have a significant impact on important locations for rare species that may not have otherwise been identified. Populations were generally larger than previously estimated using expert opinion. For example, our population estimate for the threatened Red‐lored Whistler (Pachycephala rufogularis) was ~16 times larger than the previous estimate. Main Conclusions: Our results show (a) the benefits of using abundance to identify important locations for rare species, (b) the value of developing bespoke survey methods for estimating abundance of rare species with low detectability and (c) a pathway for the application of mapped important locations in conservation land management.</p

    ICS-LTU2022: A dataset for ICS vulnerabilities

    Industrial control systems (ICS) are a collection of control systems and associated instrumentation for controlling and monitoring industrial processes. Critical infrastructure relies on supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), a subset of ICS specifically designed for monitoring and controlling industrial processes over large geographic areas. Cyberattacks like the Colonial Pipeline ransomware case have demonstrated how an adversary may compromise critical infrastructure. The Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack led to a week's pipeline shutdown, causing a gas shortage in the United States. As existing vulnerability assessment tools cannot be used in the context of ICS systems, vulnerability datasets specified for ICSs are needed to evaluate the security weaknesses. Our secondary metadata, ICS-LTU2022, consists of multiple features that can be used for vulnerability assessment and risk evaluation in industrial control systems. A description of the dataset, its characteristics, and data analysis are also presented in this paper. Vulnerability analysis was conducted based on the top 10 vulnerabilities in terms of severity, frequency by year, impact, components of the ICS, and common weaknesses. The ICS-LTU2022 vulnerabilities dataset is updated biannually. Our proposed dataset provides security researchers with the most recent ICS critical vulnerabilities.</p

    Metrical properties of Hurwitz continued fractions

    We develop the geometry of Hurwitz continued fractions, a major tool in understanding the approximation properties of complex numbers by ratios of Gaussian integers. Based on a thorough study of the geometric properties of Hurwitz continued fractions, among other things, we determine that the space of valid sequences is not a closed set of sequences. Additionally, we establish a comprehensive metrical theory for Hurwitz continued fractions.</p

    Preclinical Behavioral and Pharmacological Treatments for Enhancing Fear Extinction in Adolescence

    Adolescence is a window of vulnerability for the development of anxiety disorders but also a window of opportunity for treatments to minimize the long-term impact of such disorders. Current first-line treatments, primarily exposure-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), have limited long-term efficacy in adolescents. The urgent need for more effective interventions is underscored by the frequent reports of extinction impairments in adolescents as well as the rising anxiety rates in youth, particularly post-COVID-19. Preclinical research on the extinction of learned fear in adolescents may contribute to developing better treatment approaches to anxiety in this age group. Unfortunately, this is still a largely under-explored area. However, both pharmacological and behavioral augmentation strategies can be used to enhance extinction learning and consolidation. Here we describe work exploring such adjuncts, focusing on pre-clinical work with rodents. Much of the research to date shows striking developmental differences in response to various pharmacological treatments, with only a few shown to be effective in adolescents. Further, recent experience of stress reduces the efficacy of these treatments in adolescence. This review highlights the necessity for tailored strategies, especially when it comes to pharmacological adjuncts, that address developmental differences in drug responses as well as the impact of stressful experiences on treatment efficacy.</p

    Darwin in the classroom: Incorporating an evolutionary perspective into tourism and hospitality education

    Researchers are making increasing use of an evolutionary perspective to understand the behaviors of tourists and residents, yet the implications of our evolved psychological mechanisms for classrooms and education remain underexplored. The purpose of this research is therefore to highlight and analyze the vast untapped potential of evolutionary psychology for tourism and hospitality education. The authors provide researchers and educators with a guide to evolutionary psychology as well as demonstrate the utility of an evolutionary perspective through three education cases. These three applications are complemented by a process model that illustrates how to use and test evolutionary theory in tourism and hospitality education empirically. We conclude by providing future research avenues with the aim to advance tourism and hospitality education.</p
