Key Health and Wellbeing Concerns Among LGBTQA+ People with Disability: A Snapshot of Research Findings
In 2019, La Trobe University conducted the largest ever surveys of LGBTQA+ people in Australia: a survey of adults (Private Lives 3, total sample of 6,835) and one of young people aged 14-21 (Writing Themselves In 4, total sample of 6,418). Across these two surveys were 2,500 LGBTQA+ people who identified as having a disability or long-term health condition, representing the largest ever such sample in Australia and one of the largest globally.The Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability provided funding to perform a deeper analysis of health and social experiences among LGBTQA+ people with disability. A major report that details findings was published in November 2022.The re-analysis was supported by a dedicated lived experience advisory group of LGBTQ people with disability who provided valuable insight into their lives and experiences.</p

Moral, Religious, or Spiritual Problem: An Expanded Z Code Diagnostic Category in the DSM-5-TR
Introduction: The DSM has made advances in helping clinicians address cultural factors important in psychiatric care, including the acknowledgement of religious and spiritual problems that impact a patient’s mental health. However, moral problems have been under-recognized as a culturally contextualized source of negative consequences for occupational, social, and other areas of functioning. Methods: To recognize the clinical significance of moral problems, an expanded DSM Z -code diagnostic category entitled “Moral, Religious, or Spiritual Problem” was recently approved. Results: In light of this development, this paper reviews the conceptual and empirical connections with regard to moral, religious, and spiritual problems. A definition of moral problems is presented in relationship to transgressions of an individual’s moral identity, which may include moral dilemmas, moral distress, and moral injury. Conclusions: Various differential diagnostic issues are raised related to this expanded Z-code, as well as potential implications for clinical practice, public health, and future research.</p
Does The Australian Eating Survey FFQ Estimate Nutrient Intake Accurately in South Asians Living in Australia? A Comparative Validity Study
INTRODUCTION: Accurate dietary assessment is essential for understanding nutrition-related health risks in migrant populations. The Australian Eating Survey Food Frequency Questionnaire (AES) is widely used but has not yet been validated among South Asian (SA) migrants, the second-largest migrant group in Australia. This study aimed to evaluate the comparative validity of the AES for estimating nutrient intake within this culturally diverse group. METHODS: A cross-sectional validation study was conducted among SA adults residing in Victoria, Australia. Participants completed the AES and a 3-day weighed food record (WFR). Energy and nutrient estimates derived from both methods were compared using paired t-tests or Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Associations between values from each method were tested via Pearson/Spearman correlations, and levels of agreement were evaluated via Bland-Altman analysis. RESULTS: 218 participants completed the initial questionnaire (63.0% response rate), with 21 providing complete dietary data. Moderate agreement between AES-FFQ and WFR was observed for protein (p = 0.024), niacin (p = 0.029), vitamin B12 (p = 0.030), and beta-carotene (p = 0.036). However, discrepancies were identified for fats (p = 0.98), energy (p = 0.246), added sugar (p = 0.573), and sodium (p = 0.688), alongside inconsistent estimation for several micronutrients. Bland-Altman plots demonstrated systematic underestimation by AES-FFQ for key nutrients. CONCLUSION: The AES demonstrates acceptable validity for certain nutrients among SA migrants but shows significant limitations in accurately estimating intake of fats, energy, sugar, sodium, and some micronutrients. These findings underscore the need for culturally tailored dietary assessment tools or refined adaptations of existing instruments to better capture dietary patterns in this population.</p

A community-based physical activity intervention (FitSkills) can improve participation attendance of young people with disability: a stepped wedge cluster randomised trial
Objectives: To determine the effect on participation attendance (being there) and involvement (experience of participation) compared with usual activities of a community gym-based physical activity intervention (FitSkills) for young people with disability. Methods: An assessor-blinded stepped wedge cluster randomised trial was completed involving 163 participants with self-identified disability (61 female; mean age 19), 123 mentors and 11 sites randomised to four groups. Participant and mentor pairs exercised together two times a week for 12 weeks. The primary outcomes were participation attendance and involvement, and health-related quality of life measured by five questionnaires (Adolescent Physical Activity Recall; Adolescent Sedentary Activity; Children's Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment; Participation and Environment Measure Children and Youth (PEM-CY); Child Health Utility 9D). The secondary outcomes were participation preferences, walking capacity, attitudes to exercise, physical activity and well-being (life satisfaction). Data were analysed using linear mixed-effects models. Results: Immediately after the intervention, there was an increase in participation attendance, measured in terms of the number of different physical activities participated in (0.8 activities, 95% CI 0.4 to 1.1); and frequency (how often activities were performed) for one outcome, the PEM-CY (0.2 units, 95% CI 0.01 to 0.4). There was an increase in time spent doing physical activities (23%, 95% CI 4% to 46%), but no change in sedentary time (3%, 95% CI -6% to 12%). Analysis of time-averaged effects up to 15 months after the intervention showed an increase in the number of physical activities (1.0 activities, 95% CI 0.4 to 1.6) only. There was no change in the primary outcomes of participation involvement (ie, experience of participation) or health-related quality of life immediately after the intervention, or across time. Conclusion: A student-mentored community-gym-based physical activity intervention increased self-reported physical activities in the intermediate term but did not change health-related quality of life in young people with disability. </p
LGBT+ concerns of ageing and accessing aged care services in Australia: A cross‐sectional study
Objective: People older than 65 years are anticipated to comprise a steadily increasing proportion of the Australian population. This older adult population is also made up of other sub-populations that may experience similar, different or additional needs to the ‘average’ older adult, such as LGBT+ people. Given the well-documented history of oppression, stigma and discrimination, research is critically needed to understand how to best support the concerns and needs of populations such as LGBT+ people. Method: The present cross-sectional study aimed to explore the concerns of ageing and accessing aged care services among 171 LGBT+ people in Australia. Results: The results revealed that LGBT+ people were most concerned about their health and physical functioning, including feelings of isolation, loneliness and abandonment as they age. The results also indicated a range of specific concerns for accessing aged care services, including feeling respected and service quality and discrimination, particularly from religiously run organisations. Conclusions: Despite a relatively small and homogenous sample, this study was able to identify important beliefs and experiences held by this cohort to help shape advocacy, policy, procedures and education.</p

Cell wall-related glycosyltransferases and wall architecture in the model liverwort Marchantia polymorpha
The liverwort Marchantia polymorpha has emerged as an important plant model for developmental studies and may become central to elucidate the complex process of cell wall polysaccharide biosynthesis. This study comprehensively analyses the composition and structure of cell wall glycans across eight different M. polymorpha tissue types. We show that while the cell walls largely mirror known land plant cell wall composition, they also exhibit some unique characteristics. For example, M. polymorpha cell walls displayed a remarkably low overall pectin content, yet the relative abundance of pectic α-(1,5)-arabinan in sporophytes hints at its putative role in the evolution and complexity of spermatophyte cell walls. Furthermore, through comparative analyses of glycosyltransferase (GT) families across plant species, we found that while M. polymorpha generally has low genetic redundancy in most cell wall-related GT families, it also exhibits a diversified GT repertoire in four families, indicating uniqueness in certain cell wall biosynthesis pathways. To support research underpinning cell wall biosynthesis, we developed a Gateway compatible compendium of 87 M. polymorpha GTs, providing a valuable resource for genetic and functional studies. Our study thus works as a foundation to drive new insights into cell wall evolution, structure and function across the plant kingdom.</p
