    Cyclic Arithmetic and Combinatorial Operations

    Despite the ubiquity of the rings ℤ as the finite, cyclic models of integer arithmetic, it is rather less well-known that cyclic models of (positive) arithmetic with exponentiation exist only for cycle length 1, 2, 6, 42, and 1806. We explore finite cyclic models of other arithmetical and combinatorial operations on positive arithmetic: fixed base exponentiation, factorial, and binomial coefficients. In each case we find whether infinitely or finitely many models are possible. The case of fixed base exponentiation is particularly interesting, where for base > 2 we find that the compatible cycle sizes form a multiplicative monoid of positive integers, with infinitely many irreducible elements, and curiously sparse prime factors.</p

    A conditionally integrable non-reciprocal wave equation with diode properties

    A known class of conditionally integrable partial differential equations is extended to include those that can be reduced by a non-classical symmetry to a linear Kirchhoff equation. From any steady solution to that linear equation, there follows an exact time-dependent solution to a nonlinear hyperbolic equation. An example solution is constructed in two space dimensions and one time dimension. By a change of variable, in one space dimension these nonlinear partial differential equations are equivalent to a nonlinear wave equation with diode-like properties that break reciprocity. These properties are illustrated by an exact solution in one dimension.</p

    Pop-up Events to Enhance Access to Primary Healthcare: Implementation Guide

    The Pop-up Guide provides detailed information about how an intervention designed to support better access to primary healthcare evolved in one setting over five years. In the Pop-up Guide, we share what we learned through the experience of designing, implementing, and evaluating this community-based participatory intervention in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada as part of the IMPACT program of research (2013-2018).This guide is a partner publication to the Collaboration for Spread Handbook https://doi.org/10.26181/28622153 In this Pop-up Guide, we illustrate the ways in which the Collaboration for Spread approach can be used to guide design, implementation, and evaluation of community-based participatory research. By sharing our experiences, we aim to support similar interventions in other settings and show how the approach works in practice. The Pop-up Guide will be relevant to all stakeholders involved in implementing pop-up health and social service events in community settings, but it is specifically designed for researchers or innovators who are supporting and monitoring the intervention with the express intention of learning from the process.</p

    Ultraviolet-A Radiation (UV<sub>A</sub>) as a Stress and the Influence of Provenance and Leaf Age on the Expression of Phenolic Compounds by Eucalyptus camaldulensis ssp. camaldulensis

    Ultraviolet radiation (UV) represents a significant abiotic stress, affecting green plants. Phenolic compounds have been suggested as components involved in plant photoprotective adaptation. We used a unique combination of experimental (LED lighting and leaf tagging) and analytical (unbiased, or untargeted, metabolomics) approaches to study the effects of high (approximating mid-summer) and low (approximating winter) levels of UVA on the expression of phenolic compounds. These consisted of river red gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis ssp. camaldulensis) of five provenances. The geographically separated provenances used in our study spanned the lowest and highest latitudes of the range of this subspecies. The concentrations of gallotannins and ellagitannins (i.e., hydrolysable tannins) increased most under high levels of UVA, but responses only differed slightly among provenances. The most substantial changes in the composition of phenolic compounds were associated with leaf age. Overall, 3-month-old (herein, termed ‘young’) leaves had substantially different phenolic compositions to 6- and 12-month-old (‘old’) leaves. Hydrolysable tannins were more abundant in young leaves, whereas pedunculagin, catechin, and kaempferol galloyl glucoses were more abundant in old leaves. High levels of UVA altered the expression of phenolic compounds, but our experimental saplings were unlikely to experience photoinhibition because they were not exposed to high levels of light and low temperatures, nor were they nitrogen-limited. We expect that changes in phenolic compounds would have been more pronounced if we had induced photoinhibition.</p

    Coopetitive Resilience: Integrating Cyber Threat Intelligence Platforms in Critical Supply Chains

    This study proposes a novel contractual framework that integrates flexible cooperative procurement strategies within a Cyber Threat Intelligence Platform (CTIP) to address cyber-attack-induced disruptions in critical supply chains (CSCs). The framework examines the role of government in moderating CTIPs to facilitate information sharing, incentivize cybersecurity investments, and promote collaboration among competing CSCs. Our findings demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach in enhancing operational resilience while balancing profitability and economic welfare (EW). To validate these insights, we conduct a case study on cyber disruptions affecting Australia’s health and medical procurement sector. The results reveal that flexible minimum order quantity (MOQ) contracts provide greater EW benefits, particularly in high-risk environments, compared to fixed-quantity separate procurement models. Furthermore, this mechanism fosters coopetitive resilience by enabling CSCs to balance competition with cooperation, thereby strengthening their cyber readiness and collective ability to mitigate disruptions. Adjusting MOQ thresholds, government subsidies, and the level of cyber intelligence sharing may further enhance these benefits. Aligning CTIP regulations and targeted interventions with the distinct risk profiles of firms is crucial for optimizing outcomes in the face of cyber disruptions. This approach is particularly vital in critical sectors such as food, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare, where the timely availability of products is essential to safeguarding public safety and health.</p

    The evaluation of the Healthy Ageing Hub project in Clunes offers valuable insights into the successes and challenges of implementing a peer led, place-based and community-driven initiative to enhance the wellbeing of older adults in a rural context. Using the RE-AIM framework alongside the World Health Organization’s Eight Domains for age-friendly communities, this evaluation highlights key findings, explores their implications, and proposes actionable recommendations for implementing and sustaining similar programs.</p

    Digital reflective practice among new graduate nurses – A scoping review

    Objective: To scope the literature exploring the use of digital reflective practice for the professional development and wellbeing of new graduate registered nurses.Background: There is a growing interest in the integration of digital technologies in nursing education and practice. Digital technology encompasses electronic tools, devices, systems, and resources used by organisations for data processing, storage, monitoring, and information dissemination. Digital reflective practice has the potential to improve new graduate registered nurse well-being and professional development through real-time feedback, personalised learning experiences, and collaborative reflection opportunities.Design: A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the methodology outlined by Peters et al. (2020). The CINAHL, PubMed, Medline and PsychINFO databases were searched. Reference lists of included articles were hand searched to identify additional articles. A google scholar search was also conducted.Methods: Database searches between 2008 and March 2024 yielded 29 articles. Six duplicates were removed. The studies were screened in title and abstract with 10 studies excluded for not meeting eligibility criteria. A further six were excluded following full text review with the five remaining studies included in the review. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) was used to appraise articles. Data was extracted in a table and analysed thematically.Results: Five studies were identified from four countries using a mix of quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The digital platforms used included video recording, instant messaging, digital journals, and WhatsApp groups. The digital platforms were heterogenous in duration and locations.Conclusion: Digital reflective practice appears to support knowledge sharing and the overall wellbeing of new graduate nurses. Digital reflective practice can contribute to a community of practice that offers opportunities for collaborative learning and shared experiences. However, a paucity of research exists concerning how digital reflective practice affects new graduate registered nurse's professional development and well-being. Further, there is not a specific tool that supports digital reflective practice for new graduates. The development and use of digital reflective practice tools for new graduate nurses needs investment and research.</p

    Sex‐specific characterization of aortic function and inflammation in a new diet‐induced mouse model of metabolic syndrome

    Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) expansion promotes inflammation and vascular dysfunction in metabolic syndrome (MetS), but the sexual dimorphisms of PVAT are poorly understood. Using a new mouse model of diet-induced MetS, we characterized the aorta and determined the influence of PVAT on vascular function in males and females. Six-week-old C57BL/6 mice were fed either a high-fat diet (43% kcal in food) with high sugar and salt in their drinking water (10% high fructose corn syrup and 0.9% NaCl; HFSS), or a normal chow diet (NCD) for 10 weeks. The aorta was characterized at endpoint using pin myography, flow cytometry, bulk RNA-sequencing, GSEA analysis, and histology. Compared to NCD-fed mice, HFSS-fed mice displayed higher weight gain, fasting blood glucose, systolic blood pressure, aortic fibrosis, and perivascular adipocyte cross-sectional area, regardless of sex (p </p
