Experiences of bullying and negative acts by audiology students and interns on clinical placement
Bullying in clinical placements can significantly impact the wellbeing and career trajectories of healthcare trainees. To deepen understanding and address these issues within audiology, a survey-based approach was conducted, collecting data from Australian audiology students and interns (n=52, 70.6% audiology interns and 29.4% audiology students on clinical placement). The survey was adapted from the Clinical Workplace Learning NAQ-R. Results revealed that all participants were exposed to at least one negative act during clinical placement with nearly a third self-reporting some form of bullying. Some participants reported symptoms such as depression, self-doubt, and sleeplessness. Additionally, a substantial percentage of participants expressed intentions to quit their clinical placement or the profession altogether due to these negative experiences. The study highlights deficiencies in the implementation of workplace policies aimed at creating psychologically safe spaces for those new to the profession and emphasizes the need for effective measures to address this issue.</p
The Relationship Between Attachment to Pets and Mental Health and Wellbeing: A Systematic Review
While pet ownership is sometimes associated with better mental health, research on this relationship has been inconsistent. Some researchers have considered what factors may impact this relationship, such as owners’ attachment to their pets. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate how attachment to pets relates to owner mental health and wellbeing. This review followed PRISMA guidelines. Searches were conducted using PsychInfo, Scopus and Google Scholar. Any peer-reviewed empirical studies, in English, investigating attachment to pets and mental health and wellbeing outcomes, were included. Of the 116 included studies, 15 studies found that higher attachment was associated with better mental health, 22 studies found that higher attachment was associated with worse mental health, 36 studies found mixed results and 33 studies found no significant relationship. Having a stronger attachment to one’s pet tended to be associated with better mental health when investigating outcomes in children, and when investigating outcomes related to wellbeing. Stronger attachment tended to be associated with worse mental health when investigating mental health symptomology (e.g., depression and anxiety). It may also be influenced by the owner’s relationships with other people. Due to the cross-sectional design used by studies in this review, we cannot infer the direction of causality for the relationship between attachment to pets and mental health. Results indicate that having a strong attachment to one’s pet is not necessarily associated with better mental health and wellbeing. Future longitudinal research is needed to better understand how attachment to pets affects mental health, and what factors may influence this relationship.</p
Mitochondrial damage in muscle specific PolG mutant mice activates the integrated stress response and disrupts the mitochondrial folate cycle
During mitochondrial damage, information is relayed between the mitochondria and nucleus to coordinate precise responses to preserve cellular health. One such pathway is the mitochondrial integrated stress response (mtISR), which is known to be activated by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage. However, the causal molecular signals responsible for activation of the mtISR remain mostly unknown. A gene often associated with mtDNA mutations/deletions is Polg1, which encodes the mitochondrial DNA Polymerase γ (PolG). Here, we describe an inducible, tissue specific model of PolG mutation, which in muscle specific animals leads to rapid development of mitochondrial dysfunction and muscular degeneration in male animals from ~5 months of age. Detailed molecular profiling demonstrated robust activation of the mtISR in muscles from these animals. This was accompanied by striking alterations to enzymes in the mitochondrial folate cycle that was likely driven by a specific depletion in the folate cycle metabolite 5,10 methenyl-THF, strongly implying imbalanced folate intermediates as a previously unrecognised pathology linking the mtISR and mitochondrial disease.</p

Reimagining Open Textbooks Through a Decolonising Lens: Non-Linear Practices for Holistically Integrating First Nations Knowledges into Curriculum
This case study describes our project to transform an undergraduate open textbook at La Trobe University. At the time of writing this case study the revised version of the text is forthcoming. Here we share one of our key outcomes: the collaborative process we are using to make the transformative revisions.We reflect on a First Nations-led cultural safety review process that is enabling health science academics and library staff to jointly reconstitute this Open Education Resource (OER) as a culturally responsive text that is inclusive and accessible for diverse learners. We highlight the role of First Nations staff in leading a decolonising agenda and how non-Indigenous practitioners are supporting them through culturally responsive practices.We focus on how the project embodies First Nations ways of knowing, being, and doing through Third Spaces that foster power equity and mutually beneficial two-way learning. These ways of working provide an active alternative to the emotionally based paralysis that commonly affects non-Indigenous people, stemming from a fear of “doing the wrong thing”. This often demobilises their capacity to transform beyond allyship on an individual level (which can be tokenistic or performative and a way to stay comfortable) into ‘accomplices’ striving for wider systemic change, regardless of personal or professional discomfort (Finlay, 2020; Rix et al., 2023).Our approach is part of a broader paradigm shift to integrate First Nations knowledges into higher education curriculum in a meaningful way that is holistic rather than tokenistically additive. This paradigm shift reflects a decolonising approach which requires de-centreing dominant Western perspectives by challenging deeply rooted conventional norms and principles, and re-positioning colonial power in collaborative relationships (Smith, et al., 2018).We conclude our case study with some final reflections as prompts for practitioners to use for normalising culturally responsive practices in the Australian open education movement. Advancing the genetic engineering toolbox by combining <i>AsCas12a </i>knock-in mice with ultra-compact screening
Cas12a is a next-generation gene editing tool that enables multiplexed gene targeting. Here, we present a mouse model that constitutively expresses enhanced Acidaminococcus sp. Cas12a (enAsCas12a) linked to an mCherry fluorescent reporter. We demonstrate efficient single and multiplexed gene editing in vitro, using primary and transformed cells from enAsCas12a mice. We further demonstrate successful in vivo gene editing, using normal and cancer-prone enAsCas12a stem cells to reconstitute the haematopoietic system of wild-type mice. We also present compact, genome-wide Cas12a knockout libraries, with four crRNAs per gene encoded across one (Scherzo) or two (Menuetto) vectors, and demonstrate the utility of these libraries across methodologies: in vitro enrichment and drop-out screening in lymphoma cells and immortalised fibroblasts, respectively, and in vivo screens to identify lymphoma-driving events. Finally, we demonstrate CRISPR multiplexing via simultaneous gene knockout (via Cas12a) and activation (via dCas9-SAM) using primary T cells and fibroblasts. Our enAsCas12a mouse and accompanying crRNA libraries enhance genome engineering capabilities and complement current CRISPR technologies.</p
