    Keynote - Do Androids Dream of Open Educational Resources?

    This keynote was presented at the Deakin University Open Education Showcase 2025 on 9 December 2025.Gen AI has created a superabundance of raw informational content, which reshapes the purpose and value of Open Educational Resources (OERs). In this presentation I highlight the emerging risks of AI-related cognitive offloading and the illusion of learning. I argue that OERs remain essential as intentional, contextualised interventions that support genuine understanding, critical thinking, and the joy of discovery through desirable difficulty. Drawing on my open educational practices, my presentation positions OERs not as static informational content but as dynamic, experiential resources that can complement and strengthen AI‑mediated learning environments through teacher presence and context-enriched pedagogies.</p

    Avoiding “navigation” as an issue that shipwrecks Indonesia’s relationships with the status quo sea powers

    This report explores the historical and strategic nature of the differences between Indonesia and the major maritime states, focusing on their differing views on freedom of navigation in archipelagic waters. It describes three historic cases where these divergences have flared to become diplomatic incidents, and it examines points of friction that could adversely impact Indonesia’s future relationships with status quo sea powers. It concludes with recommendations to the latter such that they may preserve their interests and advance cooperation with Indonesia while avoiding the elements of “navigation” issues that could otherwise shipwreck those relationships.</p

    Creating and implementing effective marine and blue economy policies

    States from across maritime Asia are set to benefit from the “Blue Economy.” Indonesia alone is poised to harness an economic opportunity worth US$1.365 trillion through its Blue Economy by 2045. Through qualitative analysis of policy documents, regulations, and relevant literature, the study applies a political economy framework to assess the alignment of Indonesia’s Global Maritime Fulcrum (GMF) vision and its Marine and Blue Economy policies. The study critically analyzes Indonesia’s use of maritime terminology and compares it with other countries. This paper argues that different interpretations of associated terms can lead to varying policy outcomes and risks causing confusion in policy interpretation, hindering the effective implementation of maritime strategies. Additionally, there is a risk that Indonesia’s Blue Economy Framework and Roadmap are overly focused on economic growth and not enough on issues of sustainability and security. This narrow focus complicates stakeholder collaboration and undermines the development of a comprehensive maritime strategy. Achieving Indonesia’s maritime ambitions requires a clear and consistent definition of terms, alongside a balanced policy framework that integrates economic, environmental, and security dimensions.</p

    Perspectives and dietary management of excess weight in polycystic ovary syndrome: A focus group study with clinicians of traditional Indian medicine

    Background: Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) use traditional medicines such as Ayurveda (traditional Indian medicine) to manage their symptoms. Dietary and lifestyle advice is one of the major components of Ayurveda treatment, however, it remains unexplored. This study aimed to understand the perspectives of Ayurveda clinicians regarding PCOS and excess weight, and its management through diet and lifestyle. Methods: A qualitative methodology was implemented using online focus group discussion. The data were transcribed verbatim and analysed using content analysis. Ayurveda clinicians who fulfilled the predefined eligibility criteria were included. Results: Ten eligible Ayurveda clinicians participated in the focus group. Five categories with relevant sub-categories were identified: characteristics of women visiting Ayurveda clinicians; Ayurveda clinical toolkit for understanding clinical presentations; Ayurveda dietary approach to managing excess weight; advice related to dietary adjustments; and advice related to eating and lifestyle behaviours. Overall, most clinicians agree that an Ayurveda dietary approach is personalized, and tailored to the health needs, primarily based on Ayurveda assessment and the clinical presentation of an individual with PCOS and excess weight. Conclusion: Consistent with ‘Recommendations from the 2023 international evidence-based guideline for the assessment and management of PCOS’ Ayurveda clinicians advocate for a cultural-specific, lifelong healthy lifestyle for optimum management of PCOS beyond weight reduction. Ayurveda lifestyle counselling provides extensive insights into holistic food and lifestyle practices that individuals may adapt to their day-to-day lives. Further research may utilize consensus methods to explore potential dietary interventions and assess their effectiveness and adaptability in women with PCOS.</p

    Multiscaling limit theorems for stochastic FPDE with cyclic long-range dependence

    Abstract: The paper studies solutions of stochastic partial differential equations with random initial conditions. First, it overviews some of the known results on scaled solutions of such equations and provides several explicit motivating examples. Then, it proves multiscaling limit theorems for renormalized solutions for the case of initial conditions subordinated to random processes with cyclic long-range dependence. Two cases of stochastic partial differential equations are examined. The spectral and covariance representations for the corresponding limit random fields are derived. Additionally, it is discussed why analogous results are not valid for subordinated cases with Hermite ranks greater than 1. Numerical examples that illustrate the obtained theoretical results are presented.</p

    Effect of soaking conditions on the yield, integrity, and stability of oleosomes from hemp seeds (Cannabis sativa L.)

    Oleosomes are natural lipid storage organelles found in plant seeds, comprising a triacylglycerol core encased within a phospholipid-protein monolayer. This study investigated how soaking conditions influence the yield, composition, and oxidative stability of oleosomes extracted from Australian hemp seeds (Cannabis sativa L.). Specifically, three time–temperature combinations (4 °C for 18 h, 25 °C for 8 h, and 60 °C for 2 h) and three buffer pH levels (4.5, 7.0, and 9.0) were studied. All treatments achieved similar seed hydration and oleosome yields (60.1–64.1 %) with the highest yield (64.1 %) recorded for seeds soaked at 4 °C and pH 9.0. However, protein incorporation into the oleosome interface varied substantially (2.6 % to 10.2 %), with the highest levels observed at 60 °C and pH 7.0. These oleosomes also exhibited the greatest oxidative stability (∼80 min), whereas those prepared at 25 °C and pH 7.0 were least stable (∼52 min). Thermal analysis further showed that oleosomes obtained at elevated soaking temperatures displayed elevated transition temperatures and enthalpy of denaturation, indicating enhanced interfacial structural integrity and thermal resilience of the phospholipid-protein monolayer. Overall, these findings indicate that although soaking conditions exert minimal influence on extraction yield, they profoundly affect oleosome interfacial composition and functionality. Optimising soaking conditions can improve the structural and oxidative stability of oleosomes as natural emulsifiers or lipid carriers in food, cosmetic, and nutraceutical formulations.</p

    Australia-Korea maritime security: coordinating capacity in the Indo-Pacific

    Australia and the Republic of Korea are increasingly drawn together by shared interests and mutual concerns in the Indo-Pacific—a region that has become an epicentre of strategic competition, economic interdependence, and regional cooperation. While both countries are firmly aligned with the US-led alliance system, their regional outlooks, strategic cultures, and geopolitical priorities exhibit important differences. Australia and South Korea’s regional outlooks diverge due to differing threat perceptions and historical experiences, with Australia prioritising a free and open Indo-Pacific with a strong focus on China’s regional assertiveness, whereas South Korea remains primarily concerned with deterrence on the Korean Peninsula and managing its complex relationship with North Korea. Nonetheless, evolving regional dynamics, including maritime challenges and shifting power balances, could provide new opportunities for Australia and Korea to deepen cooperation.</p

    School sport for development in India

    There has long been an associated benefit between sport and learning. Sport develops team skills and communication, and there are social and psychological benefits. Other studies have identified that children value sport, and that it is a preferred subject in schools. Many education systems acknowledge sport’s contributions in developing children and have been applying sport as an active part of their curriculum. Based on the knowledge and experience acquired through scientific research and sport projects conducted in India, this Brief argues that sport is the perfect option for schools to facilitate activity-based learning initiatives and improve the quality of education.</p

    Gene regulatory dynamics during craniofacial development in a carnivorous marsupial

    Abstract: Marsupials and placental mammals exhibit significant differences in reproductive and life history strategies. Marsupials are born highly underdeveloped after an extremely short period of gestation, leading to prioritized development of structures critical for post-birth survival in the pouch. Critically, they must undergo accelerated development of the orofacial region compared to placentals. Previously, we described the accelerated development of the orofacial region in the carnivorous Australian marsupial, the fat-tailed dunnart Sminthopsis crassicaudata , that has one of the shortest gestations of any mammal. By combining genome comparisons of the mouse and dunnart with functional data for the enhancer-associated chromatin modifications, H3K4me3 and H3K27ac, we investigated divergence of craniofacial regulatory landscapes between these species. This is the first description of genome-wide face regulatory elements in a marsupial, with 60,626 putative enhancers and 12,295 putative promoters described. We also generated craniofacial RNA-seq data for the dunnart to investigate expression dynamics of genes near predicted active regulatory elements. While genes involved in regulating facial development were largely conserved in mouse and dunnart, the regulatory landscape varied significantly. Additionally, a subset of dunnart-specific enhancers was associated with genes highly expressed only in dunnart relating to cranial neural crest proliferation, embryonic myogenesis, and epidermis development. Comparative RNA-seq analyses of facial tissue revealed dunnart-specific expression of genes involved in the development of the mechanosensory system. Accelerated development of the dunnart sensory system likely relates to the sensory cues received by the nasal–oral region during the postnatal journey to the pouch. Together, these data suggest that accelerated face development in the dunnart may be driven by dunnart-specific enhancer activity. Our study highlights the power of marsupial–placental comparative genomics for understanding the role of enhancers in driving temporal shifts in development.</p
