The Effects of Education and Financial Development on Energy Poverty Reduction in Latin America
Using data from 14 Latin American countries over the period 2000–2019, this study examines the influence of education and financial development on energy poverty reduction. Evidence from different estimation approaches, such as dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS), fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS), and canonical correlation regression (CCR), showed that education substantially decreases energy poverty reduction in Latin America. The results also indicated that the nexus between financial development and energy poverty reduction is positively and significantly associated. Conversely, the linkage between education, financial development, and energy poverty reduction considerably varies among Latin American countries. We suggest that policies stimulating financial development and education will be pivotal in addressing energy poverty reduction in Latin America.</p
Development of a Core Outcome Set for users and funders of lower-limb prosthetic interventions (PI-COS): a step to inform the benefits measured in prosthetic health economic evaluations
Purpose: Little is known about the outcomes that are most important to prosthesis users and funders. A Prosthetic Interventions Core Outcome Set (PI-COS) will help researchers and practitioners measure outcomes that are the most important to prosthesis users and funders. Materials and methods: Prosthesis users and funders rated the importance of 121 International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) second-level categories using a two-round Delphi survey. A Consensus Meeting using the nominal group technique resolved rating differences between groups. The ICF second-level categories were ranked according to importance and a K-Means Cluster Analysis helped establish the PI-COS. Results: 65 users and 8 funders completed the Delphi surveys, followed by a Consensus Meeting. 26 ICF second-level categories were considered important to prosthesis users and funders and a PI-COS of 14 ICF second-level categories drawn predominantly from five ICF chapters was established: Sensory Functions and Pain (b2), Neuromusculoskeletal and Movement-related Functions (b7), General Tasks and Demands (d2), Mobility (d4), and Products and Technology (e1). Conclusions: The PI-COS describes the outcomes that are most important to prosthesis users and funders. The PI-COS can help focus on the most important outcome measures in clinical practice and research, including future prosthetic health economic evaluations.</p

IoTPredictor: A security framework for predicting IoT device behaviours and detecting malicious devices against cyber attacks
Abstract: Securing Internet of Things (IoT) devices is paramount to mitigate unauthorised access and potential cyber threats, safeguarding the integrity of transmitted and processed data within interconnected devices. Identifying malicious IoT devices necessitates vigilant monitoring of network traffic, behaviour analysis, and implementing security measures, including Anomaly Detection Systems (ADSs), Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs), and regular firmware updates. Traditional security approaches need to be revised for safeguarding IoT systems due to their inherent limitations in accommodating the resource-constrained nature of these devices.
We introduce IoTPredictor, an advanced security approach designed to predict and detect malicious activities in IoT devices. Leveraging Hidden Markov Models (HMMs), IoTPredictor integrates an ADS to proactively detect and thwart attacks within the complex IoT-fog computing landscape. Our conceptual approach begins with categorising IoT devices into genuine, compromised, and counterfeit. We propose an HMM-based state transition model that captures potential transitions between states, such as normal, compromised, or counterfeit operations. We introduce an algorithm for estimating probabilities associated with next-state predictions to facilitate predictive analysis. Furthermore, we present a formal approach for analysing communications between different states, enhancing the precision of the security framework. To validate the effectiveness of IoTPredictor, we conduct a series of experiments and provide a comprehensive evaluation. The results demonstrate the robustness and efficiency of our proposed security framework in predicting and preventing malicious activities, thereby contributing to the overall security enhancement of IoT devices within the complex IoT-fog computing network.</p
Nobody’s land? The oldest evidence of early Upper Paleolithic settlements in inland Iberia
The Iberian Peninsula is a key region for unraveling human settlement histories of Eurasia during the period spanning the decline of Neandertals and the emergence of anatomically modern humans (AMH). There is no evidence of human occupation in central Iberia after the disappearance of Neandertals ~42,000 years ago until approximately 26,000 years ago, rendering the region “nobody’s land” during the Aurignacian period. The Abrigo de la Malia provides irrefutable evidence of human settlements dating back to 36,200 to 31,760 calibrated years before the present (cal B.P.) This site also records additional levels of occupation around 32,420 to 26,260 cal B.P., suggesting repeated settlement of this territory. Our multiproxy examination identifies a change in climate trending toward colder and more arid conditions. However, this climatic deterioration does not appear to have affected AMH subsistence strategies or their capacity to inhabit this region. These findings reveal the ability of AMH groups to colonize regions hitherto considered uninhabitable, reopening the debate on early Upper Paleolithic population dynamics of southwestern Europe
Distribution of soil tardigrades as revealed by molecular identification across a large-scale area of Australia
Tardigrades, also known as ‘water bear’ or ‘moss piglet’, inhabit diverse environments ranging from marine to freshwater and terrestrial habitats. They occupy various trophic levels in the micro-food web attributed to their different feeding preferences and different predators, which also heralds the complexity of their ecological functions. Therefore, understanding the ecological preference of tardigrades and their interactions with other organisms is crucial for uncovering the changes in ecosystem functions performed by these organisms under future scenarios of climate change. Here, we investigated the diversity and community composition of tardigrades, and their driving factors from 194 soil samples across south and eastern Australia, based on amplicon sequencing of 18S rRNA gene. We further validated the presence or absence of tardigrades in selected soil samples using morphological detection. Eleven tardigrade genera were observed in 53 samples, predominantly from coastal soils, with Eremobiotus as the most dominant genus. Notably, mean annual temperature (MAT) was the most important factor influencing the presence of tardigrades, revealing a decreased relative abundance of tardigrades as MAT increased. Other abiotic factors, including soil pH, total nitrogen, and mean annual precipitation, as well as biotic factors, including bacteria, fungi, protists, algae and nematodes, were also critical to the distribution of tardigrades, as revealed by structural equation modelling. Morphological identification broadly aligned with our molecular findings; it also illustrated the sporadic distribution pattern of tardigrades. Taken together, our findings provide the first empirical evidence for the relationships between soil tardigrades and the environmental factors using environmental DNA and demonstrated the importance of both biotic and abiotic factors in shaping the large-scale distribution patterns of soil tardigrades. Additionally, our findings imply a certain degree of feasibility for soil tardigrade researches using environmental DNA, and highlight the potential risk of a decline in tardigrade communities in the face of increasing global temperatures
Predicting externalizing behaviors in typically developing toddlers at 24 months: Insights from parenting at 12 months
Early observational assessment of parent and child behaviors may identify risk factors associated with the development of early child externalizing behaviors. This study aimed to examine factors associated with child externalizing behaviors at 24-months of age, including early maternal depression, family social risk and the parent-child relationship. Using a longitudinal design in 89 mother-child dyads (n = 43 female), maternal depressive symptoms and social risk were measured post-birth, and 12-months later parent-child interaction was assessed using the Emotional Availability Scales. To assess child externalizing behaviors, a parent-report questionnaire was administered when children were 24-months old. Increased early maternal depressive symptoms (p = .03), but not higher social risk (p = 0.17), were associated with higher child externalizing behaviors in children at age 24-months. After adjusting for early maternal depressive symptoms and familial social risk, lower levels of observed maternal structuring (β = −2.60, 95 %CI = −4.56, −0.64, p = .01) and lower levels of non-hostility (β = −3.39, 95 %CI −6.64, −0.14, p = .04) when the child was 12-months old were associated with higher parent-report of externalizing behaviors. However, the child's observed interaction behavior was not associated with the mother's report of child externalizing behavior. Interventions targeting specific post-natal maternal mental health and early parenting behaviors may reduce the risk for the development of later child externalizing problems

“I have to fight for them to investigate things”: a qualitative exploration of physical and mental healthcare for women diagnosed with mental illness
Introduction: Women play a significant role in the management of their own healthcare and that of others, however women diagnosed with mental illness and physical health concerns experience significant health inequalities as compared to people living without mental health concerns. Methods: In this paper, we reflect on the experiences of 20 cis women diagnosed with mental and physical health concerns who agreed to be a part of this research. This qualitative study is part of the larger Healthtalk Australia research project which was not gender specific. Female participants shared many experiences of mental and physical healthcare in interviews with researchers that pointed to the need for a gendered approach to addressing health inequalities. Consequently, we iteratively consolidated transcripts of interviews with participants into thematic categories facilitated by NVIVO 12. Results: We identified two broad themes and a set of subthemes: in the doctor’s office – experience of labelling; negotiating medications; and interactions with physical and mental health, and outside the doctor’s office – responses to trauma, financial concerns, and reliance on participant’s internal resources to get healthcare needs met. Discussion: We conclude that participants in this study undertook significant work to manage their own healthcare needs, despite being challenged by clinicians and systems that failed to see them as whole people with expertise regarding their own health.</p
