Are Our Weeds Changing? A Survey of Stakeholders from the Australian Grain Production Systems
The changing climate, land use, and agronomic practices are driving shifts in weed biology and management across Australia's grain production systems. A stakeholder survey was conducted to identify key weed species, adaptations, and factors influencing future research priorities in three major cropping regions. The most problematic and adaptive species included rigid ryegrass (Lolium rigidum Gaud.), hairy fleabane (Erigeron bonariensis L.), Bromus spp. (includes both Bromus diandrus Roth and Bromus rigidus Roth), annual sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus L.), wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum L.), and feather fingergrass (Chloris virgata Sw.). These weeds also ranked high for future research focus. Observed adaptive traits included changes in dormancy, emergence patterns, shifts in phenology, and a shift towards year-round growth driven by warmer winters and increased summer rainfall. Regional responses varied slightly, with soil and crop management practices ranked as the primary driver of changing weed biology (88%), followed by climatic factors (56%), while soil factors (13%) were not considered as significant. Participants in the Northern region highlighted climate change (67%) as a major driver, while those in the Western region emphasized management practices (95%) and soil-related factors (32%). Sixty percent of participants noted that climatic changes were introducing new weeds, and 69% believed that changing weed biology was reducing control efficacy. National research priorities included understanding weed emergence dynamics (73%), effects of climate on herbicide efficacy (71%), and better understanding of weed ecology (68%). These findings highlight the trends and need for future research on changing weed biology and adaptive management strategies. Surveys of agronomists, farm advisors, researchers, and farmers provide a cost-effective method to monitor new weed adaptations. Refining survey methodologies and enhancing field data collection could improve the ability to track and manage weed adaptations to shifts in climate and management practices.</p

RNA methylation: where to from here for hematologic malignancies?
RNA methylation and the machinery that regulates or “reads” its expression has recently been implicated in the pathogenesis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and other hematologic malignancies. Modulation of these epigenetic marks has started to become a reality as several companies around the world seek to leverage this knowledge therapeutically in the clinic. Although the bases of observed activity in AML have been described by numerous groups, the exact context in which these therapies will ultimately be used remains to be properly determined. While context is likely to be of great importance here, a more “global” mechanism of action might allow for more widespread applicability to multiple disease subtypes. In other areas such as the myelodysplastic and other preleukemic syndromes, data remain sparse. Ongoing work is needed to determine whether therapeutic modulation of RNA modifications is a viable and biologically plausible approach in these cases. Regardless of the outcomes, this is an exciting era for “epitranscriptomics” as we navigate a pathway forward. Here, I describe the current knowledge around RNA methylation and hematologic malignancies at the end of 2024 including some of the relevant questions that are yet to be answered.</p
Assessing the impact of an intensive dietitian-led telehealth intervention focusing on nutritional adequacy, symptom control and optional supplemental jejunal feeding, on quality of life in patients with pancreatic cancer: a randomised controlled trial protocol
BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in Australia, with a persistently poor 5-year survival rate of around 13%. Symptoms arising from the disease and chemotherapy such as epigastric pain, anorexia, bloating and fat-malabsorptive diarrhoea cause poor oral intake and weight loss, and reduce an individual's quality of life and ability to tolerate anti-cancer treatment. The primary aim of this study is to determine if an early, intensive telehealth nutrition intervention can improve quality of life compared to usual care for people undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer. METHODS: This multicentre randomised controlled trial will recruit adults newly diagnosed with borderline resectable, locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer from multiple health services across Victoria (metropolitan and regional). The control group will receive usual nutrition care, which is site-dependent. The intervention group will receive weekly telehealth dietetic consultations for six months, targeting nutritional adequacy through dietary education and counselling, oral nutrition supplement drinks and dietetics-led symptom management advocacy, including appropriate dosing of pancreatic enzymes. Escalation to supplemental jejunal tube feeding may occur if clinically required in the intervention arm. The primary outcome is quality of life (EORTC-QLQ C30 summary score); secondary outcomes include survival, chemotherapy dosing changes, and nutrition status markers including body composition. Outcomes will be measured at baseline, and three- and six-months. DISCUSSION: The findings of this study will provide evidence of the impact that intensive nutrition therapy, including counselling, provision of oral nutrition supplement drinks and the option for jejunal feeding, has on quality of life and health outcomes in pancreatic cancer. The consistent dietetic approach with the use of telehealth consultations to reduce malnutrition and aid symptom management challenges the current model of care. Interventions, programmes and resources that address culturally and linguistically diverse consumer and carers’ cancer information needs: a mixed methods systematic review
Background: Culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) consumers and carers have been identified as experiencing high levels of unmet needs relating to information and support across the cancer journey. This review identified and evaluated the effectiveness of strategies to meet the cancer information needs of consumers and carers from CaLD backgrounds. Methods: This review followed Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for systematic reviews. Databases searched included MEDLINE, CINAHL Ultimate, PsycINFO and AMED, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, and GreyNet. Published and unpublished studies between 2013 - May 2024 on interventions, programmes or resources developed for adults (aged 18 years and over) from CaLD communities in relation to cancer prevention, cancer treatment or life after cancer were reviewed for inclusion. The review protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023451557). Results: One hundred and twenty papers were included in the review. The majority were quasi-experimental studies (n = 52), followed by randomised controlled trials (n = 38) and qualitative studies (n = 25). The populations represented in the review included Latino (n = 47), Chinese (n = 28), Asian (n = 19), Korean (n = 16), and Vietnamese communities (n = 7). Most studies focused on prevention activities (n = 89) with a smaller number focused on active treatment (n = 6) and life after cancer (n = 20). Most studies focused on breast cancer (n = 37), followed by cervical cancer (n = 21). Engagement with community members was identified as an important requirement to develop and adapt interventions that were culturally acceptable, feasible and relevant to meet the communities’ needs. The majority of interventions demonstrated a positive impact on the primary outcome measured. No studies reported on the experiences of consumers and carers from CaLD backgrounds in the development of interventions, programmes and resources to address their cancer information needs. Conclusions: This review supports a tailored approach to develop information, resources and interventions that leverage community resources and expertise to ensure that they are accessible and relevant to CaLD communities. The onus for researchers and clinicians is the creation of information, resources and interventions that are both accessible in terms of language and comprehension and are culturally relevant.</p
The Relationship Between Women's Empowerment and Demographic Characteristics with the Desire to Have Children in Indonesia
Introduction: The desire to have children is a key determinant of women's fertility behavior, inherently linked to their role in childbirth. However, women's empowerment in Indonesia remains low due to a persistent patriarchal culture limiting their decision-making autonomy. Men hold greater authority in decisions, including childbearing. The desire to have children is also influenced by demographic factors like age, education level, and place of residence. This study aims to examine the relationship between women's empowerment and demographic characteristics in relation to the desire to have children among Indonesian women of reproductive age (15-49 years).Methods This study used secondary data from the 2017 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS) with a cross-sectional design. Univariate analysis, Chi-square tests, and multivariate logistic regression examined the relationship between women's empowerment, demographic characteristics, and the desire to have children, using STATA version 15.Result The findings indicate that several factors are significantly associated with the desire to have children. Women aged 40-49 years [AOR=37.48, 95% CI=32.20-43.62], unemployed status [AOR=1.12, 95% CI=1.05-1.20], the highest household wealth index [AOR=1.33, 95% CI=1.17-1.53], history of primary school education [AOR: 1.34, 95% CI=1.02-1.76], Women who agree with their attitude towards wife beating [AOR=0.90, 95% CI=0.83-0.6], the wife has the right to refuse sex with her husband [AOR=1.10, 95% CI=1.03-1.18] significantly related to the desire to have children.Conclusion The desire to have children is influenced by both women's empowerment and demographic characteristics. Strengthening women's empowerment is crucial for fostering more equitable decision-making within families.</p
