    The impact of investment in human capital on investment efficiency: a PLS-SEM approach in the context of Bangladesh

    This study aims to evaluate the impact of human capital investment, encompassing training, education, knowledge, and skills, on the efficiency of banks in Bangladesh. Utilizing a simple random sampling method, data is gathered from 309 respondents through a seven-point Likert scale. The analysis employs measurement modeling and structural equation modeling with the PLS-SEM approach. The findings reveal a positive association between human capital investment and bank efficiency. The study suggests that by investing in training, education, knowledge, and skills, banks can enhance their investment efficiency, recognizing the varying performance levels of employees. This implies a need for aligning human capital through strategic investments. Institutional investors utilize investment management frameworks to operationalize investment policies, where efficiency integrates risk, return, and total cost. The implications of this study provide actionable insights for managers, owners, decision-makers, and academicians, serving as a basis for policy dialogue. The research contributes to existing knowledge by shedding light on the relationship between human capital investment and investment efficiency, drawing from social exchange theory and resource-based view theory.</p

    Applying Machine Learning for Antibiotic Development and Prediction of Microbial Resistance

    Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a serious threat to human health worldwide. It is now more challenging than ever to introduce a potent antibiotic to the market considering rapid emergence of antimicrobial resistance, surpassing the rate of antibiotic drug discovery. Hence, new approaches need to be developed to accelerate the rate of drug discovery process and meet the demands for new antibiotics, while reducing the cost of their development. Machine learning holds immense promise of becoming a useful tool, especially since in the last two decades, exponential growth has occurred in computational power and biological big data analytics. Recent advancements in machine learning algorithms for drug discovery have provided significant clues for potential antibiotic classes. Apart from discovery of new scaffolds, the machine learning protocols will significantly impact prediction of AMR patterns and drug metabolism. In this review, we outline power of machine learning in antibiotic drug discovery, metabolic fate, and AMR prediction to support researchers engaged and interested in this field.</p

    Protective effects of sugarcane polyphenol against UV-B-induced photoaging in Balb/c mouse skin: Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-glycosylation effects

    Although the benefits of sugarcane polyphenol (SP) are well documented, its function in preventing photoaging has not yet been investigated. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of SP in preventing ultraviolet (UV)-B-induced skin photoaging in Balb/c mice, as well as the underlying mechanism. Chlorogenic acid was determined to be the primary component of SP by using high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. SP and chlorogenic acid were orally administrated to mice for 56 days, and UV-B radiation exposure was administered 14 days after SP and chlorogenic acid administration and lasted 42 days to cause photoaging. SP and chlorogenic acid administrations significantly alleviated the UV-B-induced mouse skin photoaging, as indicated by the decrease in epidermal thickness, increase in the collagen (COL) volume fraction, and elevation in type 1 and type 3 COL contents. Notably, both SP and chlorogenic acid effectively reversed the overexpression of matrix metalloproteinase induced by UV-B exposure in the mouse skin. Furthermore, SP and chlorogenic acid reduced the expression of receptor for advanced glycosylation end products in the mice; amplified the activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase; reduced malondialdehyde levels; and decreased inflammatory cytokines interleukin 1β, interleukin 6, and tumor necrosis factor α levels. SP could be a prospective dietary supplement for anti-photoaging applications due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-glycosylation attributes, and chlorogenic acid might play a major role in these effects. Practical Application: This study can provide a scientific basis for the practical application of sugarcane polyphenols. We expect that sugarcane polyphenols can be used in food and beverage products to provide flavor while combating skin aging.</p

    Understanding the Experiences of Nurses' Work: Development and Psychometric Evaluation of an End of Shift Survey

    Abstract:Aim: To explore and validate an end of shift survey with a low response burden, practical application and generated evidence of related associations between workload, quality of work and patient care, missed care and job satisfaction.DesignA retrospective cross‐sectional survey of the experiences of nursing staff.Methods: Data were collected from 265 nurses who responded to a questionnaire at the end of their shift in 2022. Exploratory factor analysis was undertaken using IBM SPSS v.27 and confirmatory factor analysis was undertaken using IBM AMOS v27. Hypotheses testing was undertaken using IBM SPSS v.27 using multiple regression analyses.Results: All of the hypotheses were supported. There was a negative association between workload and quality of work and job satisfaction. Quality of work was negatively associated with workload and missed care and positively associated with job satisfaction. The association between missed care and job satisfaction was negative.Conclusion: The EOSS is a valid and reliable tool with a low response burden. The tool supports previous research which demonstrated there is a negative relationship between level of workload and shift type with satisfaction, quality of work and potentially nurse retention.Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care: In the context of a global nursing shortage nursing leaders must ensure that care we provide is of the highest quality. We must take every action to address high workload to reduce the risk that fundamental care is not sacrificed, job satisfaction is improved and nurses remain in the profession. The EOSS gives nurse leaders a reliable, practical, consistent, applied tool that will better enable associations to be observed between resource configuration, workload and critical impacts on nursing and patient care.Reporting Method: We have adhered to the relevant EQUATOR guidelines using the STROBE reporting method.Patient or Public ContributionNo Patient or Public Contribution.</p

    The effect of scientific conspiracy theories on scepticism towards biotechnologies

    Many conspiracy theories implicate scientists and science. We investigated the impact of exposure to scientific conspiracies about biotechnologies. Across three preregistered online studies ( Ns = 1,000), participants who read information about conspiracies involving agribiotechnology companies or biobank scientists were more likely to endorse conspiracies. Other effects of exposure to conspiracy information were mixed. In Study 1, reading about an agricultural biotechnology conspiracy had a small significant effect on reducing intentions to eat genetically modified food. In Study 2, exposure to a conspiracy involving biobank scientists decreased support for biobanks, mediated by decreased trust in biobank scientists. In Study 3, this conspiracy had no effect on wider beliefs of the role of science in society (science populism), nor support of genetically modified food-promoting policies. Overall, we found that exposure to conspiracies involving scientific claims increased conspiracy belief endorsement and can further negative effects. However, the effects of conspiracies on science populism appear limited.</p
