Enhancing Australia-Korea Cooperation in Contested Asia
Situated at opposite ends of the Indo-Pacific, Australia and the Republic of Korea are confronting shared challenges arising from intensifying strategic competition and regional uncertainty. Despite differing geographies and security pressures, both countries seek to promote regional stability and shape a multipolar Indo-Pacific order.As their bilateral relationship deepens under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, this policy brief examines how Australia and Korea can move beyond defence-industrial cooperation to exercise meaningful middle-power agency. It identifies opportunities for collaboration in holistic security, highlights the delivery of regional public goods, and offers targeted recommendations to strengthen institutional cooperation and sustain long-term ambition in the Australia–Korea partnership.</p
Plasma-assisted green assembly of polydopamine and graphene oxide on wool: Toward bioinspired, multifunctional nonwoven
Multifunctional, environmentally benign surface modification strategies for proteinaceous fibres like wool remain underexplored. This study addresses this gap by integrating a bio-inspired strategy to fabricate multifunctional nonwoven wool fabrics with enhanced UV protection, flame retardancy, and electrical conductivity. Plasma-treated wool was coated with polydopamine and graphene oxide via layer-by-layer assembly, followed by green reduction using ascorbic acid. The modified fabrics exhibited a substantial increase in UV protection, with the ultraviolet protection factor rising from ∼50 (untreated wool) to over 250 after coating with dopamine and graphene oxide, attributed to the strong UV absorption and light scattering of the hybrid coating. Thermal stability and flame retardancy were significantly improved, as evidenced by increased char yield (from 14.2 % to 30.3 %) and decreased peak heat release rate (from 135.5 to 66.1 W/g) in Pyrolysis Combustion Flow Calorimetry tests. Furthermore, conductivity measurements confirmed the successful transformation of wool into a conductive textile, with reduced graphene oxide coated samples enabling the illumination of an LED circuit, while untreated wool remained insulating. This study presents a facile and bio-inspired approach to engineering multifunctional wool textiles through environmentally friendly processes. The improved thermal stability, UV protection, and conductivity make natural wool materials promising for protective and wearable electronics applications.</p
Optimistic people are all alike: Shared neural representations supporting episodic future thinking among optimistic individuals
Optimism is a critical personality trait that influences future-oriented cognition by emphasizing positive future outcomes and deemphasizing negative outcomes. How does the brain represent idiosyncratic differences in episodic future thinking that are modulated by optimism? In two functional MRI (fMRI) studies, participants were scanned during an episodic future thinking task in which they were presented with a series of episodic scenarios with different emotional valence and prompted to imagine themself (or their partner) in the situation. Intersubject representational similarity analysis revealed that more optimistic individuals had similar neural representations in the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), while less optimistic individuals exhibited more idiosyncratic neural representations in the MPFC. Additionally, individual difference multidimensional scaling of MPFC activity revealed that the referential target and emotional valence of imagined events were clearly mapped onto different dimensions. Notably, the weights along the emotional dimension were closely linked to the optimism scores of participants, suggesting that optimistic individuals imagine positive events as more distinct from negative events. These results suggest that shared neural processing of the MPFC among optimistic individuals supports episodic future thinking that facilitates psychological differentiation between positive and negative future events.</p

Bridging the digital divide for people with aphasia: a study protocol for codesigning web accessibility tools and guidelines
INTRODUCTION: Aphasia is a language impairment that affects one-third of people who experience a stroke. Aphasia can impact all facets of language: speaking, understanding, reading and writing. Around 60% of people with aphasia have persistent language impairments 1 year after their stroke, requiring ongoing healthcare and support. In recent years, the internet has become a key resource for the self-management of chronic health conditions. Navigating web content, however, requires language use, and as such, people living with aphasia are more likely to be excluded from digital health and support services. Web Content Accessibility Guidelines exist; however, they do not fully address the unique and diverse needs of people with aphasia, and a significant proportion of websites (over 90%) do not fully adhere to them. This protocol paper describes the first two stages of the Bridging the Digital Divide project, which aims to codesign and develop (a) a web-browser extension to re-render webpages to an 'aphasia-friendly' (accessible) format, (b) training tools to help users and health professionals customise the web-browser extension and (c) guidelines for developing communication-accessible websites. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The research will be conducted using experience-based codesign. In Stage 1a, focus groups will be held with (1) people with aphasia, (2) family members or significant others and (3) health professionals working with people with aphasia. Participants will be asked to share their experiences of accessing (or supporting a person with aphasia to access) healthcare, information and support services on the web. The nominal group technique (NGT) will be used to identify priorities for improving web accessibility for people with aphasia. Focus group data will be analysed using reflexive thematic analysis, and prioritisation data will be analysed using inductive qualitative content analysis. In Stage 1b, eight codesign workshops will be held with representatives of the three key stakeholder groups to iteratively codesign and develop a web-browser extension, training tools and guidelines to support web accessibility. </p
