    Energy efficient noise error pattern generator for guessing decoding in bursty channels

    For the hard guessing random additive noise decoding Markov order (GRAND-MO) algorithm, it is crucial to develop an efficient noise error patterns (NEPs) generator to facilitate its application in bursty channels. This paper proposes a practical hardware realization by generating the NEPs in a sequential manner. Based on classification of the four types of NEPs, we propose to iteratively calculate the “1" and the “0" permutations in the same time. Then, the novel “0" permutation regularization and bit flipping techniques are employed, through which the generation of the four types of NEPs is uniformed at the same way. Moreover, the proposed NEPs generator can generate all NEPs by using the “1" burst parameters, and is suitable for the guessing decoding of any linear block codes. Built on field programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation and comparison with existing benchmark, we show the proposed NEPs generator is a power-efficient architecture for realization. This work presents a new solution for the hardware implementation of the NEPs generator in GRAND-MO.</p

    Countering 'the moral science of biopolitics': Understanding hepatitis C treatment 'non-compliance' in the antiviral era

    Although new hepatitis C treatments are a vast improvement on older, interferon-based regimens, there are those who have not taken up treatment, as well as those who have begun but not completed treatment. In this article, we analyse 50 interviews conducted for an Australian research project on treatment uptake. We draw on Berlant’s (2007, Critical Inquiry, 33) work on ‘slow death’ to analyse so-called ‘non-compliant’ cases, that is, those who begin but do not complete treatment or who do not take antiviral treatment as directed. Approached from a biomedical perspective, such activity does not align with the neoliberal values of progress, self-improvement and rational accumulation that pervade health discourses. However, we argue that it is more illuminating to understand them as cases in which sovereignty and agency are neither simplistically individualised nor denied, and where ‘modes of incoherence, distractedness, and habituation’ are understood to co-exist alongside ‘deliberate and deliberative activity […] in the reproduction of predictable life’ (Berlant, 2007, p. 754). The analysed accounts highlight multiple direct and indirect forces of attrition and powerfully demonstrate the socially produced character of agency, a capacity that takes shape through the constraining and exhausting dynamics of life in conditions of significant disadvantage

    HLASwin-T-ACoat-Net based Underwater Object Detection

    Due to the limited light penetration in underwater environments, sonar equipment plays a crucial role in various commercial and military operations. However, underwater images often suffer from degradation due to scattering and absorption phenomena, resulting in poor visibility of submerged objects. To address this challenge, image enhancement techniques are essential for enhancing the appearance and visibility of underwater objects. This research proposes a novel approach called HLAST-ACNet, which combines the advantages of a hybrid Local Acuity Swin Transformer and an Adapted Coat-Net for Underwater Object Detection (UOD). The HLASwin-T-ACoat-Net leverages Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) to increase the quality of images. Additionally, it incorporates a path aggregation network to integrate deep and shallow feature maps and utilizes online complicated example mining to improve training efficiency. Furthermore, the algorithm improves Region of Interest (ROI) pooling by introducing ROI alignment, which mitigates quantization errors and enhances object detection accuracy. Compared to existing algorithms, the algorithms based on HLASTACNet demonstrate significant improvements in the URPC2018 and OUC datasets, achieving precision rates of 91.25% and 92.36%, respectively. The research model has a higher computational complexity than four existing methods, as evidenced by its GFLOPs, per-image processing time with a speed of 20ms, and the FPS measures for average processed frames per second reaching 2.28s. The research model effectively addressed the challenges and false detection with varying sizes of objects in complicated underwater environments

    Trends in alcohol-related harm among Swedish youth: Do in-patient care registry data match drinking trends?

    Introduction: Youth drinking has been declining in Sweden since the year 2000. There is a paucity of studies examining trends in alcohol-related harm during this period. The overall aim of the present study is to examine how trends in alcohol-related harm match trends in drinking among Swedish youths during 2000–2021. Methods: Measures of alcohol use were obtained from national school surveys. Prevalence rates of any alcohol use and heavy episodic drinking were used. Alcohol-related harm indicators were obtained from registry information from the National Board of Health and Welfare. Annual trends in harm indicators were tested with linear regression models and correlations between alcohol use and alcohol-related harm indicators were assessed using Pearson's correlation on annual data. Results: Statistically significant negative trends were observed for all alcohol-related harm indicators for the period 2000–2021. Significant correlations were found for both measures of alcohol use and all alcohol-related harm indicators. Discussion and Conclusions: The levels of alcohol-related harm have declined among youths in Sweden during the period 2000–2021. The trends in harm seem to reflect the decline in youth drinking that has occurred during the same period.</p

    Gender and socioecological level differences in stakeholders' perceptions of athlete attrition factors in an Australian high-performance pathway system

    Objectives: This study aimed to build on previous work by the authors. It examines how socioecological level and gender influence high-performance sport system (HPSS) stakeholders' perspectives of the relative importance and feasibility to address athlete attrition factors within an Australian high-performance pathway system (HPPS). Design: Mixed methods. Methods: Sub-analysis was conducted of rating data from 30 participants who had contributed to identifying 83 statements in 13 clusters in a previous Concept Mapping study. The 13 clusters were statistically analysed in ‘R’ using cumulative link mixed models (CLMMs) to determine differences in perceived importance and feasibility between 1) socioecological levels, and 2) genders. Results: Mean ratings for 11 and three of the 13 clusters were statistically significantly different between at least two of the five socioecological levels, for importance and feasibility, respectively. Athletes had the largest variation in mean ratings from the most (athlete health 4.59), to least (performance potential 2.83) important cluster, when compared to the other four socioecological levels. There were statistically significant differences between the ratings between genders (Men/Women) for two clusters for each rating scale: Importance: ‘athlete health’ (M3.33:W3.84 [p 0.012]); ‘performance potential’ (M3.35:W2.57; [p 0.001]), Feasibility: ‘abuse and mismanagement of health’ (M2.97:W3.68; [p 0.000]) and ‘athlete health’ (M2.54:W3.33; [p 0.000]). Conclusions: This study highlights the need to implement more robust athlete attrition monitoring protocols. It also highlights the importance of listening to youth athletes' voices, and enabling equal gender representation to ensure holistically tailored environments are created to retain talented athletes in high-performance pathway programmes.</p

    Prevalence and risk factors of oral potentially malignant disorders in Indonesia: a cross-sectional study undertaken in 5 provinces

    Detection of subjects with oral potentially malignant disorders in a population is key to early detection of oral cancer (OC) with consequent reduction of cancer-related morbidity and mortality. Our aim was to investigate the prevalence and associated risk factors for OPMD in representative provinces of Indonesia. This cross-sectional study was undertaken in five Indonesian provinces: West Java (WJ), Jakarta (JKT), West Papua (WP), West Kalimantan (WK) and Banda Aceh (BA). Respondents answered a previously validated questionnaire including information on ethnicity, occupation, socioeconomic status (SES), oral health practices, and behaviours associated with oral cancer. An oral examination was undertaken using WHO standardized methodology. Data were analysed using ANOVA, Chi-Square, and logistic regression to assess association between risk factors and mucosal disease. A total of 973 respondents between the ages of 17 and 82 years was enrolled (WJ 35.5%,JKT 13.3% WP 18.3%, WK 9%, BA 23.9%). Tobacco smoking (14.8%), Betel quid (BQ) chewing (12.6%) and alcohol drinking (4%) varied geographically. A well-established OPMD was detected in 137 (14.1%) respondents and 2 (0.2%) presented with chronic ulceration later diagnosed as OC. Leukoplakia was the most common OPMD found (9.7%), while the prevalence of oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), not previously described in the nation, was 2.3%. Poor knowledge of OC risk factors, poor oral hygiene behaviours, low-income SES and ethnicity were significantly associated with the presence of an OPMD. There is a previously under-reported high prevalence of OPMD in Indonesia. Overall, we found a strong correlation between the presence of an OPMD and individual habituation to known risk factors.</p

    Hopeless Romantics: Australian Studies in Romanticism

    For most of the twentieth century, Romantic writers were largely ignored by serious Australian scholars even as they were celebrated and imitated outside the academy. This article tracks the belated emergence of Romanticism as a specialist field of study in Australia while providing what is often a counter-narrative about the broader reception of Romantic literature and ideology by the Australian public. In tracing these contrary yet entwined histories, the article shows how Romantic literature has been and remains implicated in the ongoing project of Australian colonization from 1788 to the present. It has been conscripted into the work of establishing a series of penal colonies on stolen Aboriginal land; of valorizing an English-speaking territorialization of that land; of shaping settler subjectivity; and of defining a national identity often vexed in its relationship to anglophone cultural centers. Exploring the ways in which the reception of Romantic culture is diffracted across various Australian sub-cultures, the essay arrives at the field as it exists today: at a critical Australian Romanticism that is, and needs to be, increasingly attentive to the history of the field and its investments in the settler-colonial state.</p

    The Resilient Dairy Genome Project - a general overview of methods and objectives related to feed efficiency and methane emissions

    The Resilient Dairy Genome Project (RDGP) is an international large-scale applied research project that aims to generate genomic tools to breed more resilient dairy cows. In this context, improving feed efficiency and reducing greenhouse gases from dairy is a high priority. The inclusion of traits related to feed efficiency (e.g., dry matter intake [DMI]) or greenhouse gases (e.g., methane emissions [CH4]) relies on available genotypes as well as high quality phenotypes. Currently, 7 countries, i.e., Australia [AUS], Canada [CAN], Denmark [DNK], Germany [DEU], Spain [ESP], Switzerland [CHE], and United States of America [USA] contribute with genotypes and phenotypes including DMI and CH4. However, combining data is challenging due to differences in recording protocols, measurement technology, genotyping, and animal management across sources. In this study, we provide an overview of how the RDGP partners address these issues to advance international collaboration to generate genomic tools for resilient dairy. Specifically, we describe the current state of the RDGP database, data collection protocols in each country, and the strategies used for managing the shared data. As of February 2022, the database contains 1,289,593 DMI records from 12,687 cows and 17,403 CH4 records from 3,093 cows and continues to grow as countries upload new data over the coming years. No strong genomic differentiation between the populations was identified in this study, which may be beneficial for eventual across-country genomic predictions. Moreover, our results reinforce the need to account for the heterogeneity in the DMI and CH4 phenotypes in genomic analysis

    Integrating climate model projections into environmental risk assessment: a probabilistic modeling approach

    The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) convened a Pellston workshop in 2022 to examine how information on climate change could be better incorporated into the ecological risk assessment (ERA) process for chemicals as well as other environmental stressors. A major impetus for this workshop is that climate change can affect components of ecological risks in multiple direct and indirect ways, including the use patterns and environmental exposure pathways of chemical stressors such as pesticides, the toxicity of chemicals in receiving environments, and the vulnerability of species of concern related to habitat quality and use. This article explores a modeling approach for integrating climate model projections into the assessment of near- and long-term ecological risks, developed in collaboration with climate scientists. State-of-the-art global climate modeling and downscaling techniques may enable climate projections at scales appropriate for the study area. It is, however, also important to realize the limitations of individual global climate models and make use of climate model ensembles represented by statistical properties. Here, we present a probabilistic modeling approach aiming to combine projected climatic variables as well as the associated uncertainties from climate model ensembles in conjunction with ERA pathways. We draw upon three examples of ERA that utilized Bayesian networks for this purpose and that also represent methodological advancements for better prediction of future risks to ecosystems. We envision that the modeling approach developed from this international collaboration will contribute to better assessment and management of risks from chemical stressors in a changing climate.
