    Can dynamical systems theory be applied to second language acquisition? The issues of reductionism and intentionality

    In this article we address two key questions in the application of dynamical systems theory (DST) to second language acquisition (SLA) that have not been resolved in recent debates about this issue. The first question relates to reductionism. Is an antireductionist position a necessary element of DST? We show that the radical antireductionist stance put forward by key movers of the application of DST to SLA neither follows from the mathematics of DST nor from the application of DST to science and that radical antireductionism results in an impasse for empirical research. In contrast, we argue that reductionism offers ways in which theory-derived hypotheses can be formed about subsystems that can be studied empirically using DST mathematics. The second question relates to intentionality. Are physical systems and mental systems similar enough to justify applying DST principles based in the physical sciences to processes in the human mind? Following Tschacher, we argue that current evidence suggests that there is a limited class of mental phenomena that can arise from physical phenomena. It is only this class of mental phenomena that can currently be modeled using DST mathematics. We offer a discussion of these perspectives to indicate how important it is to resolve these fundamental questions. In our view, these fundamental issues need resolution to put the application of DST to SLA on a solid conceptual and empirical footing.</p

    The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in substantial pressures for healthcare workers across the world. The association between fear of COVID-19 and psychological distress, and the role of psychological resilience have gained research interest. The current study aimed to investigate the cross-sectional association between fear of COVID-19 and psychological distress, in Australian rural/regional healthcare workers and determine whether resilience modifies this association. Most participants were nurses (38.0%), mean age was 44.9 years, and 80.5% were female (N = 1313). An adjusted logistic regression analysis showed that the highest tertile of the Fear of COVID-19 scale was associated with higher odds of moderate to severe symptoms of anxiety (OR = 3.72, 95% CI = 2.27, 6.11; p </p

    Reimagining LGBTIQ+ research – Acknowledging differences across subpopulations, methods, and countries

    Inequalities and discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation, and sex characteristics remain pervasive worldwide. Scholars have collaborated to address structural and social barriers in LGBTIQ+ research, creating a substantial literature base. However, much of this work focuses on specific segments of the population, overlooks resilience- and strengths-based approaches, and is predominantly conducted in the U.S. and other Western countries. In this introduction article, we discuss how this special issue extends previous research by uniting scholars globally to collaboratively reimagine the lens through which scientists conduct LGBTIQ+ research. By exploring diverging needs across subgroups of LGBTIQ+ people, discussing the (dis)advantages of various methodological choices, and offering a better understanding of how unique legal and social landscapes affect LGBTIQ+ individuals globally, this special issue aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the current state of research combined with concrete directions for redress. Given that barriers to conducting LGBTIQ+ research differ significantly by nation, we conclude this introductory article by calling for a research community that is more aware of unequal power dynamics within academia, willing to take action to reduce disparities in the global academic system, and inclusive of voices from underrepresented groups.</p

    The Human-Centred Design of a Universal Module for Artificial Intelligence Literacy in Tertiary Education Institutions

    Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is heralding a new era in AI for performing a spectrum of complex tasks that are indistinguishable from humans. Alongside language and text, Generative AI models have been built for all other modalities of digital data, image, video, audio, and code. The full extent of Generative AI and its opportunities, challenges, contributions, and risks are still being explored by academic researchers, industry practitioners, and government policymakers. While this deep understanding of Generative AI continues to evolve, the lack of fluency, literacy, and effective interaction with Generative and conventional AI technologies are common challenges across all domains. Tertiary education institutions are uniquely positioned to address this void. In this article, we present the human-centred design of a universal AI literacy module, followed by its four primary constructs that provide core competence in AI to coursework and research students and academic and professional staff in a tertiary education setting. In comparison to related work in AI literacy, our design is inclusive due to the collaborative approach between multiple stakeholder groups and is comprehensive given the descriptive formulation of the primary constructs of this module with exemplars of how they activate core operational competence across the four groups.</p

    Traffic Congestion and Safety: Mixed Effects on Total and Fatal Crashes

    This paper examines the effects of traffic congestion on total crashes, fatal or serious injury (FSI) crashes, and fatal-only crashes in peak periods using a zone-level safety analysis in Greater Melbourne. Bayesian mixed-effect negative binomial models are employed to investigate the relationship between a congestion index and the frequency of total and FSI crashes. In addition, Bayesian mixed-effect binary logistic models are adopted to explore the association between the congestion index and the likelihood of having fatal crashes in Statistical Area Level 2 (SA2) zones. Modelling results indicate that traffic congestion tends to increase total crashes in both the AM and PM peak periods and FSI crashes in the AM peak period. In contrast, traffic congestion tends to decrease the likelihood of having fatal crashes at both the AM and PM peaks. These findings suggest that many policies to reduce traffic congestion may also enhance road safety by lowering the overall number of crashes. However, it is crucial to incorporate careful speed management within these policies to reduce the risk of fatal crashes effectively.</p

    Support for a browser plug-in blocking online alcohol imagery among Australian participants: A qualitative interview study

    Abstract:-  Issues Addressed: Alcohol depictions are extremely common online, and there is a reported relationship between alcohol exposure and alcohol use. A browser plug-in specifically designed to block online alcohol depictions may be helpful to prevent the uptake of alcohol or increased alcohol use.  Methods: Twenty-five semi-structured interviews were conducted, examining participants' beliefs about the effects of online alcohol exposure and their support for developing the browser plug-in. Results: Using reflexive thematic analysis, we found participants highlighted a clear impact of viewing alcohol online and offline alcohol use. Participants believed a browser plug-in that blocked alcohol was acceptable and would be especially useful for minors (to prevent alcohol initiation) and those who are aiming to reduce their alcohol use.  Conclusions: Participants emphasised that viewing online alcohol exposure had an impact on drinking behaviours, such as increased craving and temptation. The browser plug-in was considered an easy intervention tool for both parents and people who are experiencing alcohol-related problems or trying to reduce their drinking.  So What?: Participants' continuous support of an alcohol-blocking browser plug-in suggests that future health promotion strategies should consider the development of a prototype plug-in.</p

    The repeatability of stride time variability, regularity, and long-range correlations

    Background: Detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) and sample entropy (SE) measure the long-term correlations and regularity of gait patterns, respectively, having previously been used to identify participants at risk of falling, previous history of injury, or patients with motor diseases. Since these measures are more sensitive to gait impairment than linear measures (e.g., the standard deviation [SD] of stride time), they can be potentially used in military medicine to identify soldiers at risk of injury. However, clinometric properties are yet to be established. Research Question: What is the repeatability of DFA, SE, and traditional linear measures of stride time variability (SD and coefficient of variation [CV]) under various load and speed constraints? Methods: Fourteen Australian Army trainee soldiers (age: 25.6 ± 5.9 y, height: 1.74 ± 0.08 m, body mass: 77.2 ± 15.1 kg, service: 1.5 ± 1.8 y) attended three sessions over two weeks, completing four 12-minute walking trials on an instrumented treadmill in each session. Participants walked with a combination of 0 kg or 23 kg loads at a self-selected or 5.5 km/h speed. Heel contacts from the right foot were identified using treadmill-embedded force plates. From 512 stride time intervals, linear (SD and CV), and non-linear (DFA and SE) measures were obtained. To assess the between-session repeatability, intraclass correlations (ICC 2,1) were employed. Results and Significance: There was poor-to-moderate repeatability for the SD (ICC: 0.357–0.545) and CV (ICC: 0.371–0.529). DFA showed poor-to-moderate repeatability (ICC: 0.013–0.504), while SE had poor repeatability (ICC: 0.133–0.226). Previous studies have shown that differences of > 0.19 in DFA and > 0.66 in SE can differentiate between healthy and pathological gait. These values are greater than this study's reported standard error of measurement, indicating that clinically meaningful changes may still be detectable despite low repeatability.</p

    Infant BMI trajectories as early risk markers of poor psychosocial health in preadolescence

    BACKGROUND: Common mental disorders often emerge during childhood and adolescence, and their prevalence is disproportionately elevated among those affected by obesity. Early life growth patterns may provide a useful target for primordial prevention; however, research is lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to identify distinct body mass index (BMI) trajectories during the first year of life and to assess their associations with psychosocial outcomes in preadolescence (9-13 years). METHODS: Data were obtained from n = 1778 Greek children (9-13 years). Infant anthropometric data were obtained from paediatric health records and BMI trajectories during the first year of life were estimated using group-based trajectory modelling. Preadolescent emotional functioning, self-esteem, body image dissatisfaction and dieting behaviours were self-reported via validated questionnaires. Associations were estimated using binary and ordinal logistic regression, adjusted for key confounders. RESULTS: Four BMI trajectories were identified: low (26.7%), average (41.8%), high (25.2%), and very high (6.4%). Children belonging to the very high trajectory had greater odds of body image dissatisfaction (OR: 1.62, 95%CI: 1.11, 2.38), dieting behaviour (OR: 1.49, 95%CI: 1.01, 2.20) and restrained eating (OR: 1.69 95%CI: 1.14, 2.52) than children belonging to the average trajectory. Body image dissatisfaction was also greater in children belonging to the high trajectory (OR: 1.40, 95%CI: 1.11, 1.76). However, infant BMI trajectories did not significantly predict childhood emotional functioning or self-esteem status. CONCLUSION: Infants with BMI growth in the high reference ranges had poorer psychosocial outcomes in preadolescence. Whilst further research is needed to replicate these findings, monitoring early infant growth trajectories may allow for early stratification of infants at risk of poor psychosocial outcomes.</p

    To what extent could eliminating racial discrimination reduce inequities in mental health and sleep problems among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children? A causal mediation study

    Background: Racism is a fundamental cause of health inequities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. We estimated the potential reduction in inequities in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children's mental health and sleep problems if interpersonal racial discrimination was eliminated. Methods: We drew on cross-sectional data from the Speak Out Against Racism (SOAR; N = 2818) and longitudinal data from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC; N = 8627). The SOAR was completed in 2017 and the LSAC followed children from 2004 to 2014 in the kindergarten cohort and from 2008 to 2018 in the birth cohort. Exposure: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander/Anglo-European), a proxy measure of structural racism (SOAR: 10–15 years; LSAC: 4–5 years); Mediator: interpersonal racial discrimination (yes/no) (SOAR: 10–15 years; LSAC: 12–13 years); Outcomes: mental health problems (yes/no) and sleep problems (yes/no) (SOAR: 10–15 years; LSAC: 14–15 years). An interventional effects causal mediation approach was used. Findings: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children had higher prevalence of mental health problems (SOAR: 40.1% versus 13.5%; LSAC: 25.3% versus 7.6%) and sleep problems (SOAR: 28.5% versus 18.4%; LSAC: 14.0% versus 9.9%) than Anglo-European children. Hypothetical interventions eliminating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children's experiences of interpersonal racial discrimination could reduce 42.4% and 48.5% of mental health and sleep inequities in SOAR (equivalent to 11.2% and 4.7% absolute reductions) and 25.6% and 1.6% of mental health and sleep inequities in LSAC (equivalent to 5.5% and 0.1% absolute reductions). Absolute remaining inequities were similar across both studies for both outcomes. Interpretation: Targeted policy interventions that eliminate racial discrimination against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children could have high potential to reduce inequities in mental health and sleep problems. Addressing racism and racial discrimination needs a multi-component and multi-level approach directed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. </p
