    Mathematics on the Move: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Teaching Mathematics Using Physical Education

    Physical educators can incorporate mathematics and technology into their curriculum. The challenge is how to do this without sacrificing the core learning central to physical education (PE). The aim of this study was to examine the impact of an intentionally designed interdisciplinary six-week program called Maths on the Move (MOTM), specifically designed to integrate mathematics and PE. The study participants included two middle school PE teachers and two mathematics teachers. Within PE lessons, students wore a human activity monitor (HAM) that recorded step counts and acceleration to allow students to gather their personalized data for use in their mathematics lessons on statistics and probability. While the teachers applied our interdisciplinary approach, the challenges and complexities of interdisciplinary methods were observed. We demonstrated how the integration of PE and mathematics can enrich students’ learning experiences, illustrating MOTM as a versatile integrated approach. Despite the results, a gap between pedagogical content knowledge, teacher connectiveness, and practical application was found. In conclusion, this study underlined the value and possibilities of integrating PE and mathematics through a teacher-centered approach, setting the stage for future research to enhance the effectiveness of interdisciplinary education.</p

    This paper explores the BBNJ Agreement’s capacity-building framework from the perspective of two countries, Indonesia and the Philippines, and considers how its modalities and cooperative mechanisms and tools could bring unprecedented benefits and opportunities, but also implementation challenges to these countries individually, and more broadly to the Southeast Asia region as a whole.</p

    Strategic culture and Indonesian approach to maritime “rules-based order”

    This paper argues that Indonesia’s strategic behaviour in the maritime domain is deeply influenced by its strategic culture. Dominant interpretations of Indonesia’s geography and strategic history have given rise to two strains of strategic culture that coexist in tension. The inward-looking strain reflects Indonesia’s sense of vulnerability. It narrowly focuses on safeguarding Indonesia’s territorial integrity as an archipelagic state and advancing the domestic development agenda. In contrast, the outward-looking strain reflects Indonesia’s self-perception of being a “great maritime nation”, characterised by a sense of entitlement to regional leadership. Indonesia’s reluctance to fully endorse the “rules-based order” narrative—viewed as a pretext for greater external power involvement in the region and tantamount to sidelining Indonesia’s leadership role in the region—should be understood through the interplay of these two strains.</p

    Polynomial deformations of sl(2) and unified algebraic framework for solutions of a class of spin models

    We introduce novel polynomial deformations of the Lie algebra sl(2). We construct their finite-dimensional irreducible representations and the corresponding differential operator realizations. We apply our results to a class of spin models with hidden polynomial algebra symmetry and obtain the closed-form expressions for their energies and wave functions by means of the Bethe ansatz method. The general framework enables us to give an unified algebraic and analytic treatment for three interesting spin models with hidden cubic algebra symmetry: the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, the molecular asymmetric rigid rotor, and the two-axis countertwisting squeezing model. We provide analytic and numerical insights into the structures of the roots of the Bethe ansatz equations (i.e. the so-called Bethe roots) of these models. We give descriptions of the roots on the spheres using the inverse stereographic projection. The changes in nature and pattern of the Bethe roots on the spheres indicate the existence of different phases of the models. We also present the fidelity and derivatives of the ground-state energies (with respect to model parameters) of the models. The results indicate the presence of critical points and phase transitions of the models. In the appendix, we show that, unlike the so-called Bender-Dunne polynomials, the set of polynomials in the energy E, Pℓ(E) ,corresponding to each of the three spin models has two critical polynomials whose zeros give the quasi-exact energy eigenvalues of the model. Such types of polynomials seem new.</p

    Queer theory, normalising regimes and the cultivation of (safe) sportscapes: a queer intersectional praxis for belonging and inclusion in physical education?

    This paper draws on data from a case study into a local women’s Australian Rules football team, investigating how players experienced the particularities of the sportscape in which they played. Emerging from the dataset was an overwhelming emphasis on discourses of belonging and inclusion, with players expounding on the nuances of this space as somewhere that their variously gendered bodies, sizes, abilities and selves were not just accommodated, but normalised. Reflecting various axes by which inclusion was experienced, players highlight the enactment of an intersectional lens which enabled a sportscape in which difference was seen, accepted and responded to inclusively. Drawing on queer theory, this paper explores how normalising difference – applying a queer theoretical lens – undermined normalising regimes across various axes of difference in this local sportscape, with implications for players’ experiences and participation. It further asks what role the active cultivation of this sportscape played in impacting players’ experiences and perceptions of acceptance, inclusion and belonging, and asks whether a queer lens – a critical consciousness of and around normalising regimes of power and hegemony along various axes – might offer us ways for thinking through the cultivation of more inclusive (safer) physical education spaces. A queer theoretical lens demonstrates the ways in which normalising regimes re/produce that which becomes hegemonic within different spaces. This paper considers how we can apply the principles of normalising difference within this football sportscape to physical education (PE) spaces to explore how PE teachers might cultivate spaces which foster inclusion, belonging, participation and engagement through normalising diversity in relation to intersectional axes of difference.</p

    Environmental DNA analysis of honey samples for the detection of <i>Serratia marcescens</i> and <i>Malpighamoeba</i><i> mellificae </i>Across Australia- raw data

    The bacterium Serratia marcescens and the protozoan Malpighamoeba mellificae are opportunistic and rare pathogens, respectively, that can compromise digestive health in honey bees (Apis mellifera). To assess their presence in Australia, we applied an environmental DNA (eDNA) approach using honey (n = 135) collected across multiple states. S. marcescens was detected in 78 samples, while M. mellificae was not detected, highlighting honey-based eDNA analysis as a valuable surveillance tool for emerging bee health threats.</p
