Wandering with a camera – the body in somatic landscape screendance

No full text
Keywords: Wanderlust in screendance, embodiment of place, somatic landscape screendance, memory of place, romanticism, HeimatThis chapter introduces the Wanderlust method, a site-specific holistic approach for the making of landscape screendance where the somatic encounter of the body in landscape is utilized as the source for all stages of the creation. Focusing on the tria-logue of the site-dancer-camera, it presents the Wanderers method for the gathering of footage in screendance, site-specific screendance performance, the somatic camera, and somatic editing, as strategies for screendance making. The artefacts are defined as visual-aural poems outlining the genre within the screendance discipline, as somatic landscape screendance. The underpinning romantic themes of Heimat , the figure of the Wanderer and Embodiment of Place in landscape art in relation to artistic and philosophical aspects of the early German Romantic landscape artists are discussed, and it is illustrated how this visceral approach of capturing footage in landscape offers a reflective dialogue for the maker as well as for the audience. <br/

Lesbian women and attachment theory: A scoping review

No full text
The purpose of this scoping review was to explore the lesbian adult attachment literature. Eight databases were searched yielding 4,827 total articles which were subsequently distilled to 37 articles for full review. Thematic analysis was used to develop themes related to attachment theory and lesbian relationships. Themes included the unique aspects of lesbian attachment relationships, the nuance of avoidant attachment in lesbian relationships, the impact of lesbian identity development on attachment, and the comparison of lesbian attachment relationships to other populations. Methodological nuances and significant gaps in the literature are noted. Directions for future research are discussed

Test-retest reliability of TMS motor evoked responses and silent periods during explosive voluntary isometric contractions

No full text
PurposeThis study assessed the test-retest reliability of TMS motor evoked potentials (MEPs)and silent periods at early, middle, and late phases of the rising time-torque curveduring explosive voluntary contractions. We also investigated how the number ofconsecutively averaged measurements influenced reliability.MethodsOn two separate occasions 3-7 days apart, 14 adults completed 16 isometricexplosive (1-s) contractions of the knee extensors per condition, superimposed with TMS. The TMS elicited an MEP and silent period in the superficial quadriceps muscles at 45 (early), 115 (middle), or 190 ms (late) during each contraction. TMS was alsosuperimposed at the plateau of 15 separate MVCs. Test-retest intraclass correlationcoefficient (ICC) and coefficient of variation (CV) were calculated for MEPs and silentperiods consecutively averaged over 3 to 15 separate contractions.ResultsNo one condition/phase was more reliable than another. For MEP amplitude, in allconditions except the explosive late phase, ICCs generally increased, and CVdecreased, with an increase in the number of averaged contractions, and were >0.50ICC and <15% CV within 7 contractions. For silent period, ICCs and CVs wereunaffected by the number of consecutively averaged contractions and remained >0.50 ICC and <10% CV.ConclusionTest-retest reliability of TMS responses is comparable between phases of explosivecontraction and at the plateau of MVC. To maximise reliability of MEPs duringexplosive contractions or MVCs, we recommend future studies average data acrossmore than the 3-5 contractions typically reported in the literature investigating MEPs at MVC plateau.<br/

Pets, Power, and Legitimacy

This article argues that the relations of social and political power that obtain between humans and pets are illegitimate. We begin by showing that pets, a largely neglected population in political philosophy, are subject to socially and politically organised power, which stands in need of justification. We then argue that pets have three moral complaints against the relations of power to which they are subject. First, our power over pets disrespects their moral independence: the fact that they are not simply available to be used to serve the interests or projects of others. Second, our power over pets systematically sets back their interests in exercising control over their own body, actions, and environment. Third, in subjecting pets to asymmetric relations of power in which they are heavily dependent on humans for the satisfaction of their interests, we subject them to objectionable risks of harm. Together, these complaints support our thesis that the power relations central to the institution of pet keeping are illegitimate. The practical upshot is that we have a strong moral reason to abolish this institution

Common Auditors and Accounting Comparability: Evidence from Vietnam

No full text
Purpose – This study aims to investigate the relationship between common auditors and accounting comparability of listed companies in Vietnam. Design/methodology/approach – The authors follow De Franco et al. (2011) to measure accounting comparability and Francis et al. (2014) to construct a measure for common auditors. Ordinary least squares (OLS) regressions are employed to analyse a sample of 45,178 firm-peer pair observations of companies listed in Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange from 2016 to 2022.Findings – The authors find a positive relationship between common auditors and accounting comparability. The observed relationship is more pronounced when both audit partners of firm-peer pairs are female and when firms are audited by auditors with greater industry expertise. The authors conduct different robustness tests and find consistent results.Practical implications – Investors, analysts, and creditors may find our findings valuable when evaluating peer companies for the comparability of financial information, aiding their investment, valuation, and lending decisions. Additionally, leaders of audit firms could consider the findings of this research to establish relevant policies (e.g. by considering female gender when promoting or assigning personnel to audit engagements).Originality/value – The authors provide original evidence on the positive relationship between common auditors and the accounting comparability of listed companies in Vietnam

Reimagining falls prevention with insights from systems mapping on the use of millimetre-wave radar for remote health monitoring

Falls constitute a significant public health concern, demanding innovative solutions that transcend traditional methodologies. Current falls practice focuses on reactive post-fall assessment and management rather than proactive prevention and mitigation. We propose that millimetre-wave radar technology for real-time, continuous falls risk screening at home may address the limitations of current falls practice. To investigate the feasibility of this solution, we interviewed five experts in physiotherapy, falls prevention among older adults, and comprehensive geriatric assessment to identify the current state of play and potential for changes to falls practice. We applied a novel technique, systems mapping, to visually illustrate and analyse the interactions between components of current and proposed systems for addressing falls and constructed two conceptual maps: First, the current system was mapped by asking experts about the causal relationships between 15 system components. Second, to examine the feasibility of the proposed system, the components related to falls risk screening were replaced by radar-based home monitoring and experts were asked to re-evaluate the causal relationships between system components. Next, four scenarios (no fear of falling, no mobility limitation, maximising screening in the current system, maximising radar-based screening) were applied using the maps. Experts identified mobility deterioration and previous falls as key indicators of future falls, noting that increased screening in current practice could reduce risks but increase healthcare professionals' workloads. Experts were positive about radar-based wireless home monitoring, believing it could reduce fall risks whilst reducing all fall-related costs. These findings suggest that, according to experts, millimetre-wave radar can be an effective solution in advancing falls prevention

Jean-Luc Godard's Unmade and Abandoned Projects

No full text
This book offers the first study of the French-Swiss filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard's vast body of over 380 unmade, unfinished and abandoned projects over the course of his career from the late 1940s to the 2020s.While Godard is widely recognised as one of the most important and influential filmmakers of the post-war period, extremely little has been written about his largely invisible and unknown corpus of unrealised works. This includes many unmade films, videos and television programmes alongside a wide range of unfinished non-audiovisual ventures such as plays, books, exhibitions, a CD, a camera, a film journal, and even an architectural maquette.Drawing on extensive research on the surviving traces of these projects in archives and private collections, Michael Witt's comprehensive survey establishes the extent and constitution of the Godardian corpus of unrealised and abandoned works for the first time and examines them in detail in six key perspectives: literature, cinema, theatre, television, politics and history. The volume includes in-depth case studies of numerous major unfinished initiatives by Godard and his collaborators in locations around the globe (France, the Middle East, the USA, Quebec, the People's Republic of Mozambique), charts the extensive connections between his abandoned projects and his completed works, casts in relief his creative process, and offers a fresh way of thinking about and approaching his practice and oeuvre as a whole. A full annotated list of his unrealised and abandoned projects is included as an appendix
