    The Role of Diet, Glycaemic Index and Glucose Control in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Management and Mechanisms of Progression

    Purpose of Review: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder with several causal pathways including impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance (IR), compensatory hyperinsulinemia and excess androgens (hyperandrogenism). This heterogeneous condition causes a range of reproductive, metabolic and psychological implications, the severity of which can differ between individuals depending on factors such as age, diet, ethnicity, genetics, medication, contraceptive use, adiposity, and Body Mass Index (BMI). Recent Findings: Dietary interventions that focus on a low glycaemic index and glucose control are an efficient first-line dietary solution for the management of impaired glucose tolerance and IR, which subsequently improves weight management, quality of life and PCOS-related symptoms in individuals with this condition. Summary: This review aims to explore the relevance of nutrition and more specifically, the association of glycaemic index and glycaemic load with PCOS, as well as to assess the potential benefits of manipulating those indexes in the dietary approach for this syndrome

    Microplastic ingestion by an aquatic ciliate: Functional response, modulation, and reduced population growth

    Microplastic particles are ubiquitous in aquatic environments and are considered a major threat to the largerange of heterotrophic organisms that involuntarily consume them. However, there is current uncertainty aroundthe mechanisms underpinning microplastic uptake by aquatic consumers and the consequences for both the fateof the microplastics and the growth potential of consumer populations. We performed a feeding experiment, exposinga model freshwater ciliate, Tetrahymena pyriformis, to six different microplastic concentrations and measuredmicroplastic uptake and population growth over the course of several generations. Microplastic uptake increasedin a saturating fashion with concentration, consistent with a Type II functional response, with a maximumfeeding rate of 22 microplastic particles individual−1 h−1. Interestingly, microplastic uptake decreasedthrough time and we observed that, after egestion, microplastic particles aggregated, rendering them too largefor re-consumption. We built and tested a simulation model which matched rates of microplastic uptake when incorporatingfunctional response parameters and assuming 50 % immobilisation of microplastics after egestion.Nevertheless, ciliate population growth was compromised by the presence of microplastics, decreasing by 43 %over the full microplastic concentration range. Taken together, our results demonstrate the potential for aquatic ciliates to play an important role in the uptake, transfer, and modification of microplastics in freshwater environmentswith associated negative impacts on population fitness

    Lesbian women and attachment theory: A scoping review

    The purpose of this scoping review was to explore the lesbian adult attachment literature. Eight databases were searched yielding 4,827 total articles which were subsequently distilled to 37 articles for full review. Thematic analysis was used to develop themes related to attachment theory and lesbian relationships. Themes included the unique aspects of lesbian attachment relationships, the nuance of avoidant attachment in lesbian relationships, the impact of lesbian identity development on attachment, and the comparison of lesbian attachment relationships to other populations. Methodological nuances and significant gaps in the literature are noted. Directions for future research are discussed

    Flogging Jack Nafte::Corporal Punishment, Imperial Assimilation, and Jewish Whiteness in Pre-Apartheid South Africa

    In this article, I focus on the whip and the body to examine an imperial variety of Jewish assimilation. Empire, I argue, not only provided Jews more diverse opportunities for social mobility and economic and political integration than the nation-state; its variegated categories and racial hierarchies made Jewish whiteness—at any rate, some kind of Jewish whiteness—more attainable than in the imagined ethnic homogeneity of the nation-state. In the imperial space of the Union of South Africa, where they were neither ‘native’ nor ‘English’ or ‘Boer’, Jews could strive to attain whiteness that was relative, flexible, and variegated; unstable, yet more readily negotiable. To this end, I reconstruct The ‘notorious’ trial and controversial flogging sentence imposed in 1929 Transvaal on a Jewish farmer. Classified as ‘European’ and ‘white’ in court records and so reported throughout the British empire, the flogging of Jack Nafte illustrates how individual Jews and Jewish community institutions negotiated different shades of whiteness in imperial settings and the conditions of pre-apartheid South Africa and, in order to contend with the bar of Jewish ‘unassimilability’, devise two pathways to whiteness: one English, the other Afrikaner

    Algorithmic Optimisation in Cloud Robotics:A Systematic Review of Implementation Barriers and Performance Gains

    This study conducts a systematic analysis of algorithmic optimisation approaches in cloud robotics systems, examining both performance gains and implementation barriers. Drawing from publicly available datasets from IEEE Dataport, Kaggle, and seminal reviews in the field, we analyze performance across five key metrics: task completion time, resource utilization, energy efficiency, failure rate, and adaptation time. Our findings reveal that hybrid cloud-edge architectures consistently outperform other approaches, achieving up to 67% improvement in task completion time and 73% in energy efficiency compared to conventional methods. However, implementation barriers—particularly system interoperability and network latency issues—significantly constrain the realization of these theoretical gains in practical deployments. We develop an integrated implementation framework that aligns algorithmic selection with contextual requirements and provides staged adoption pathways to maximize real-world benefits while minimizing implementation risks. This research bridges the gap between theoretical optimization models and practical deployment considerations, offering actionable guidance for cloud robotics implementer

    Impact of a mineral enriched, fiber complex on glycaemic response and satiation in healthy adults: a double-blind, crossover intervention study

    Purpose: To investigate the effects of a chromium-enriched glucomannan-fructooligosaccharide complex (SB) on glycaemic and insulin responses, satiation, and hunger biomarkers in healthy adults. Methods: Using a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised crossover design, we assessed the acute impact of a single 3 g SB dose in 16 healthy adults (BMI 18.5–24.9 kg/m2) during a modified oral glucose tolerance test. On separate days, participants consumed 50 g dextrose or 50 g dextrose with 3 g SB (SBD). Blood glucose and insulin were analysed over 2.5 h. Hunger, fullness, and desire to eat were assessed via visual analogue scales. Additionally, the impact of SB on gastric viscosity was assessed in vitro. Results: SBD intake significantly reduced the insulin concentration compared to dextrose alone at 45, 75, and 90 min post-intake. Additionally, SBD resulted in significantly greater fullness and a lower desire to eat at 75 min when compared to dextrose (p < 0.05). Although hunger increased over time for both interventions, SBD led to lower hunger, desire to eat, and food desire scores compared to dextrose at 150 min (p < 0.05). The viscosity of SB, even when combined with dextrose, was significantly higher compared to dextrose alone. Conclusions: These novel findings suggest that SB can modulate insulin response and influence appetite regulation, highlighting its potential use in weight management strategies
