    Casting Black Athenas: Black Representation of Ancient Greek Goddesses in Modern Audiovisual Media and Beyond

    This article focuses on Black representations of Greco-Roman goddesses in film and on television, exploring the historical and ideological conditions which have allowed audiences to react neutrally or favorably toward such representations. Adopting the transmedial perspective, the intersecting forces that have gradually disjointed conceptions of the gods and goddesses of Greek mythology in popular culture and imagination are considered. Such forces include nonspecialist understandings of ancient gender and its artistic interpretation, race versus colorism, and the commodity culture of cinema. Some portrayals of Black goddesses examined in this article appear in works imagineered or influenced by Disney: Hercules (1997 film, 1998–1999 animated series), The Little Mermaid (1989 film, 2008 Broadway musical) and Once Upon a Time (2011–2018 television series), whereas others appear in Syfy’s The Magicians (2015-2020 television series) and Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson (2010 film and the upcoming television series). Casting Black women as Greek goddesses gradually weakens the conceptual entanglement between the Whiteness and the Greco-Roman divine, priming audiences to accept alternative representations of deities through cultural accretion

    Human Agency in the Missio Dei and the Problem of Discipleship

    At the heart of this article is an inquiry into the relationship between human and divine agency in the doctrine of the missio Dei and a critique of the turn to the language of discipleship in looking to articulate this agency. Taking the World Council of Churches’ Commission of World Mission and Evangelism's two recent documents, Together towards Life: Mission and Evangelism in Changing Landscapes (TTL) and the “Arusha Call to Discipleship,” as a case study, this article will seek to articulate an account of human participation in the missio Dei which maintains the emphasis on spirituality in TTL. Through a close reading of TTL and the Arusha Call, the article will demonstrate that the introduction of discipleship language has not solved the issue of agency but rather has changed the account of agency and, as a result, the missiology. By turning to accounts of faithful participation from qualitative research into British Methodism, to John V. Taylor's Go-between God, and to Pope Francis’ Evangelii gaudium, I will suggest that a better account of human agency in the missio Dei can be developed by emphasizing the pneumatology of TTL and by turning to language of attentiveness, accompaniment, and discernment

    Towards Verifying Cooperatively-Scheduled Runtimes using CSP

    In this paper we present the novel verification of synchronous channel communication and channel alternation (choice) by considering the environment within which our primitives are executing. Our work is in exploring development of a multi-threaded scheduler for a cooperatively scheduled process-oriented language, ProcessJ. We use CSP to produce formal specifications for the implementation of the various parts of the language runtime (scheduler, runtime components, and generated code). We use established CSP specifications that model channel communication and choice as well as the formal verification tool FDR to formally prove that the implementations are correct and behave as expected, when executed by our scheduler (the execution environment). Our approach is novel and not seen in similar research, because we consider the behaviour of the systems we examine under the restrictions imposed by an execution environment (e.g., a runtime system, a scheduler, an operating system, etc.) and show that even with such restrictions the channel communication and alternation work. More specifically, we show correctness when a system is executed by the ProcessJ cooperative scheduler. The main contributions of this work are in the models defined and method undertaken to verify cooperatively channel communication and choice

    Collagen is the most abundant structural protein and extracellular matrix component in mammals. In the human colon, collagen fibres reside in all the major functional sublayers; namely, the mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa and the serosa. Methods to quantify collagen content in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) stained sections are required and image analysis offers a technique by which the spatial distribution and localisation of collagen fibres can be easily measured. This laboratory protocol was developed from established techniques using FFPE colon. Human colonic samples embedded transversally in paraffin wax were serially sectioned and stained with either Masson’s trichrome (MT) or Picrosirius red (PSR) staining. Quantitation estimation of collagen content in each sublayers were performed via ImageJ processing. Hydroxyproline content was quantified using a rapid and sensitive assay in sectioned colonic tissue. Either MT or PSR staining followed by morphometric image analysis via ImageJ provided equally appreciable quantitative results. Moreso, analysis of hydroxyproline content in the samples indicate that this protocol could be useful in retrospective studies for FFPE samples. This laboratory protocol provides a systematic and reproducible method that can be utilised to accurately assess collagen content in individual functional sublayers of the colonic wall as well as detection of overall hydroxyproline content in FFPE specimens.<br/
