A review of the literature on the complex relationship between stigma and naturism

    No full text
For many decades naturism has been viewed as a controversial behavior. The term naturism is sometimes used interchangeably with nudity, though failure to differentiate these expressions highlights the current lack of knowledge surrounding this activity and can lead to sexualization of the behavior. The research method adopted here was an electronic search of the published literature on stigma and its components (discrimination and stereotyping). The results of the search revealed a considerable gap in the existing literature surrounding the link between stigma towards the act of engaging in naturism. Perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs towards naturism are complex, multifaceted, and vary dependent on factors including law, location, religion, and the situation-specific feature of naturism. Naturism has received sizeable presence on social media and in press. Anecdotal evidence from media representation suggests that naturists can experience severe consequences associated with engaging in this behavior. However, there is currently a shortage of empirical research studies to support this assumption that have focused on stigma towards naturism so no firm conclusions can yet be drawn. Given the reported rise in those engaging in naturism, and the provocative media portrayals, it is imperative that attitudes and beliefs about naturism are further unraveled empirically through rigorous research. This review draws attention to the ill-understood and complex relationship that exists between stigma and naturism

A Sense of Danger: Gender-Based Violence and the Quest for a Sensory Criminology

    No full text
This article responds to recent calls for a ‘sensory criminology’ by offering a multi-sensorial analysis of gender-based violence (GBV). We examine both the often-discussed external senses as well as the more marginalized internal senses and explore how emotion, the broader criminological ‘atmosphere’ of GBV and the shift in atmosphere during the Covid-19 pandemic are implicated in women’s experiences of street-based sexual harassment and sexual assault. By analysing over 140 stories of GBV during the Covid-19 lockdowns, we evidence the scope and value of a fully multi-sensory criminology

SET-PP2A complex as a new therapeutic target in KMT2A (MLL) rearranged AML

    No full text
KMT2A-rearranged (KMT2A-R) is an aggressive and chemo-refractory acute leukemia which mostly affects children. Transcriptomics-based characterization and chemical interrogation identified kinases as key drivers of survival and drug resistance in KMT2A-R leukemia. In contrast, the contribution and regulation of phosphatases is unknown. In this study we uncover the essential role and underlying mechanisms of SET, the endogenous inhibitor of Ser/Thr phosphatase PP2A, in KMT2A-R-leukemia. Investigation of SET expression in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) samples demonstrated that SET is overexpressed, and elevated expression of SET is correlated with poor prognosis and with the expression of MEIS and HOXA genes in AML patients. Silencing SET specifically abolished the clonogenic ability of KMT2A-R leukemic cells and the transcription of KMT2A targets genes HOXA9 and HOXA10. Subsequent mechanistic investigations showed that SET interacts with both KMT2A wild type and fusion proteins, and it is recruited to the HOXA10 promoter. Pharmacological inhibition of SET by FTY720 disrupted SET-PP2A interaction leading to cell cycle arrest and increased sensitivity to chemotherapy in KMT2A-R-leukemic models. Phospho-proteomic analyses revealed that FTY720 reduced the activity of kinases regulated by PP2A, including ERK1, GSK3β, AURB and PLK1 and led to suppression of MYC, supporting the hypothesis of a feedback loop among PP2A, AURB, PLK1, MYC, and SET. Our findings illustrate that SET is a novel player in KMT2A-R leukemia and they provide evidence that SET antagonism could serve as a novel strategy to treat this aggressive leukemia.</p

The associations among executive planning, self‐determination, and quality of life in adolescents with intellectual disability

    No full text
Skills such as planning and problem solving that are required in self-determination can be cognitively demanding. It has not yet been examined whether executive functions and intelligence are associated with levels of self-determination in individuals with intellectual disability (ID), and how that is related to quality of life (QoL). This study examined the associations among executive functions, intelligence, self-determination, and QoL in adolescents with ID. Seventy-nine adolescents aged between 17 and 20 years with mild ID participated in the study. Executive functions were assessed by experimental tasks. Non-verbal IQ and survey data regarding QoL and self-determination capacity were collected from the participants. In a regression model with QoL as the dependent variable, only executive planning and self-determination capacity (but not working memory, inhibition and IQ) were significant predictors of QoL. Two mediation models were tested based on the hypotheses, literature and current findings. Model 1 revealed that executive planning had a negative direct effect on QoL when the mediator, self-determination capacity, was held constant. Model 2 indicated that the significant association between self-determination and QoL was not mediated by executive planning. The findings highlighted the crucial significance of self-determination, in comparison with executive functions and intelligence, for improving the QoL in adolescents with ID. Importantly, higher executive planning skill was even associated with lower QoL if self-determination was not concurrently strengthened. These findings carry implications for the design of education and intervention programmes aimed at improving QoL of adolescents with ID. [Abstract copyright: © 2023 The Authors.
