Experiences of mothers of children with and without Special Educational Needs (SEN) in England during the COVID-19 lockdowns: a qualitative study
Grandmother kinship carers: negotiating conflicts in identity, blame, loss and love in the context of ‘mother blame’
It is estimated that over half of all kinship carers in the UK are grandparents, the majority of whom are grandmothers. These grandmothers face a range of economic, social and emotional challenges arising from their roles in a society where women are expected to shoulder the burden of unpaid care within families. In this article, we draw on data from qualitative interviews with 24 grandmother kinship carers to understand the challenging emotional landscape that this role produces. In particular, we highlight how grandmother kinship carers are navigating contradictory dual roles as both ‘mothers’ and ‘grandmothers’ that become entangled within pervasive discourses of ‘mother blame’. We highlight how discourses of mother blame are mobilized and reinforced, not just within the broader structures and institutions of our society, but within individual families. When this happens, unequal gender norms and expectations around care and the family, as well as underlying structural inequalities, remain obscured
Driving Innovation to Support Pupils with SEND Through Co-Production in Education and Research: Participatory Action Research with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome Families in England
Children and young people (CYP) with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) comprise over 1.6 million pupils in classrooms in England. However, evidence suggests pupils’ learning and wellbeing needs are often missed or unmet and legislation designed to increase families’ decision-making in education provision has not been translated into practice. The current participatory action research study investigated the perceptions and experiences of a specific population of SEND pupils in mainstream schooling—CYP with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q). Participants included existing and previous mainstream pupils and their parents (n = 8 parent−CYP dyads). Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and a hybrid inductive-deductive thematic analysis was conducted. Five superordinate themes were generated: minding the gaps in school support; my mental wellbeing story; power and influence; getting it wrong: failing CYP and families; and getting it right: from surviving to thriving. Findings provided authentic insights into the lived experiences of support for CYP with 22q which resonate with the wider SEND population. These findings can help to inform more inclusive practice in mainstream settings. An affirmative model which places SEND pupils and parents at the heart of meaningful reform is urgently needed in schools. Machine Learning Algorithm-Based Prediction of Diabetes Among Female Population Using PIMA Dataset
Background: Diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by increased blood sugar levels. Early detection of diabetes could help individuals to manage and delay the progression of this disorder effectively. Machine learning (ML) methods are important in forecasting the progression and diagnosis of different medical problems with better accuracy. Although they cannot substitute the work of physicians in the prediction and diagnosis of disease, they can be of great help in identifying hidden patterns based on the results and outcome of disease. Methods: In this research, we retrieved the PIMA dataset from the Kaggle repository, the retrieved dataset was further processed for applied PCA, heatmap, and scatter plot for exploratory data analysis (EDA), which helps to find out the relationship between various features in the dataset using visual representation. Four different ML algorithms Random Forest (RF), Decision Tree (DT), Naïve Bayes (NB), and Logistic regression (LR) were implemented on Rattle using Python for the prediction of diabetes among the female population. Results: Results of our study showed that RF performs better in terms of accuracy of 80%, precision of 82%, error rate of 20%, and sensitivity of 88% as compared to other developed models DT, NB, and LR. Conclusions: Diabetes is a common problem prevailing across the globe, ML-based prediction models can help in the prediction of diabetes much earlier before the worsening of the condition
Developing guidelines on <scp>EFT</scp> for same‐sex/gender relationships: Recommendations from a Delphi study
AbstractEmotionally focused therapy (EFT) is one of few empirically supported treatments for relationship distress. While evidence‐based approaches are critical for ensuring safe and effective treatment, EFT has not been adapted for use with same‐sex/same‐gender (SS/SG) relationships. This study used the Delphi method to generate consensus on treatment guidelines for using EFT with SS/SG relationships. Forty therapists with clinical expertise in EFT for SS/SG relationships were recruited. Data were collected in three phases. In phase one, participants responded to open‐ended questions regarding how EFT should be adapted for SS/SG relationships. Phases two and three involved participants rating the importance of the recommended guidelines. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis and descriptive statistics. The final recommendations included 49 guidelines on EFT for SS/SG relationships. The data reflected modifications to therapists' foundational knowledge and development, practice set up and orientation, and the three stages and nine steps of EFT

Human Rights and the Rights of Nature: Friends or Foes?
This article explores the connections between human rights and the rights of nature. Rights of nature are emerging as a global movement to re-think and move away from dominant anthropocentric approaches to law. As it is based on the idea that nature has inherent rights, rights of nature are often labelled to be the “human rights of nature”. However, this association with human rights, which are by nature is anthropocentric, is also paradoxical. This article argues that despite the anthropocentric nature of human rights, there could some strong alignments notably on issues concerning the universalism, interdependence, and indivisibility of rights. One interest in linking two movements is that human rights law is enriched by few centuries of legal developments, a diverse jurisprudence, and abundant campaigning and advocacy tools. With rights of nature being much ‘younger’ there might be lessons to be learned from the ‘older’ human rights movement. The argument put forward is that despite some potential clashes between human rights and the rights of nature, there are some legal principles that have been developed under international human rights law that could serve to alleviate these clashes, as well as to serve as a catalyst to support future rights of nature advocacy.<br/
Hyperacetylated histone H4 is a source of carbon contributing to lipid synthesis
Histone modifications commonly integrate environmental cues with cellular metabolic outputs by affecting gene expression. However, chromatin modifications such as acetylation do not always correlate with transcription, pointing towards an alternative role of histone modifications in cellular metabolism. Using an approach that integrates mass spectrometry-based histone modification mapping and metabolomics with stable isotope tracers, we demonstrate that elevated lipids in acetyltransferase-depleted hepatocytes result from carbon atoms derived from deacetylation of hyperacetylated histone H4 flowing towards fatty acids. Consistently, enhanced lipid synthesis in acetyltransferase-depleted hepatocytes is dependent on histone deacetylases and acetyl-CoA synthetase ACSS2, but not on the substrate specificity of the acetyltransferases. Furthermore, we show that during diet-induced lipid synthesis the levels of hyperacetylated histone H4 decrease in hepatocytes and in mouse liver. In addition, overexpression of acetyltransferases can reverse diet-induced lipogenesis by blocking lipid droplet accumulation and maintaining the levels of hyperacetylated histone H4. Overall, these findings highlight hyperacetylated histones as a metabolite reservoir that can directly contribute carbon to lipid synthesis, constituting a novel function of chromatin in cellular metabolism.
