An experiment-based investigation into machine learning for predicting coronary heart disease
Extensive inquiry has been conducted to explore potential applications of machine learning methodologies in the realm of cardiovascular disease management. To facilitate a more comprehensive investigation This study explores machine learning algorithms, specifically Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), for disease identification, focusing on cardiovascular diseases. Utilizing a Kaggle dataset of around seventy thousand medical records, the research aims to refine methodology and assess performance variations. SVM and ANN techniques are applied to the Kaggle dataset, revealing SVM accuracies of 0.9997 (default), 0.9998 (RBF kernel, C=100.0), and 1.000 (linear kernel, C=1000.0). The Feedforward neural network, using Adam optimization across 50 batches and 10 epochs, achieved perfect accuracy of 1.000
Precise Mechanical Oscillator Design and Calibration for Characterising Sub-Millimetre Movements in mmWave Radar Systems
For many industrial and medical applications, measuring sub-millimetre movements has become crucial, for instance, for the precise guidance of surgical robots. The literature shows the feasibility of millimetre-wave (mmWave) radars to deal with such micro-vibrations. However, the availability of reference devices to configure and test these systems is very limited. This work proposes the design of a mechanical oscillator to characterise sub-millimetre vibration detection and measurement using a mmWave radar. The final implementation is fully controllable in both amplitude and frequency. Additionally, it can be wirelessly controlled and synchronised with other systems. Its functioning was experimentally calibrated and tested using the sub-millimetre motion capture system OptiTrack. It was tested to generate low-frequency oscillations from 0.80 Hz to 3.50 Hz with reliable peak amplitudes of 0.05 mm and above, with less than 6% peak amplitude relative error. Finally, the device was used to characterise a 60 GHz mmWave radar with those values

Understanding Gender Inequality in Political Self-Efficacy in Early Adolescents: Different Measures, Different Gender Gaps

We suggest you refer to the final published version should you wish to cite from it. Research has shown a persistent gender gap in political self-efficacy across most Western countries. Nevertheless, the regularity in these findings masks the diversity in the measures used to capture this construct and little reflection has been undertaken on the extent that changing the measures has on the size and the direction of the gender gap. This article tests on students aged 14 in 38 countries using the IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study, the extent that self-efficacy in the domain of politics is a unidimensional measure and if different gender gaps can be found between self-efficacy measures capturing partisan politics compared to broader citizenship self-efficacy measures. The findings show that it is only partisan political self-efficacy measures where there is a significant gender gap and where girls are disadvantaged. This is the case for 37 out of 38 countries and robust when controlling for different levels of political knowledge. When a broader measure of citizenship self-efficacy is used, there are much less gender differences, and when there is a significant difference, girls outperform boys in 14 out of 38 countries. These contrary findings are similar in the same study when comparing the measures on interest in politics and interest in social issues

Diet quality and anxiety: a critical overview with focus on the gut microbiome
Anxiety disorders disproportionally affect females and are frequently comorbidwith eating disorders. With the emerging field of nutritional psychiatry, focushas been put on the impact of diet quality in anxiety pathophysiology andgut microbiome underlying mechanisms. While the relationship between dietand anxiety is bidirectional, improving dietary habits could better facilitatethe actions of pharmacological and psychological therapies, or prevent theiruse. A better understanding of how gut bacteria mediate and moderate suchrelationship could further contribute to develop personalized programs andinform probiotics and prebiotics manufacturing. To date, studies that looksimultaneously at diet, the gut microbiome, and anxiety are missing as onlypairwise relationships among them have been investigated. Therefore, thisstudy aims at summarizing and integrating the existing knowledge on thedietary effects on anxiety with focus on gut microbiome. Findings on theeffects of diet on anxiety are critically summarized and reinterpreted in relationto findings on (i) the effects of diet on the gut microbiome composition,and (ii) the associations between the abundance of certain gut bacteria andanxiety. This novel interpretation suggests a theoretical model where therelationship between diet and anxiety is mediated and/or modulated by thegut microbiome through multiple mechanisms. In parallel, this study criticallyevaluates methodologies employed in the nutritional field to investigate theeffects of diet on anxiety highlighting a lack of systematic operationalizationand assessment strategies. Therefore, it ultimately proposes a novel evidence based approach that can enhance studies validity, reliability, systematicity, andtranslation to clinical and community settings
