Embodying the artistic mindsets of three 19th century cellists : J.L. Duport, B. Romberg and A. Kraft
This research project explores the holistic approach to musicianship characteristic of virtuoso cellists in the end of 18th and beginning of 19th centuries. By understanding and embodying the inner collaborative processes that happened amongst their performance, compositional, improvisatory, and mentorship “selves”, the goal was to become closer to being a native speaker of their musical language.
Bernhard Romberg, Jean Louis Duport and Anton Kraft were taken as examples of this musicianship, with an intention of becoming acquainted with the specific elements in their artistry that differentiated themselves within a shared musical scene, contributing to the shaping of their individual artistic personalities. In the first chapter of this Written Commentary, I discuss the various individual characteristics embedded in the artistic outputs of the three musicians, based on an analysis of their treatises (in the cases of Duport and Romberg) and an analysis and embodiment process of their compositions, which were mostly written for themselves to play.
The process of embodiment of their respective technical skillset, improvisatory language and performance mindset led to a deeper understanding of the loci communes and the distinctive features in their artistic outputs. These elements were naturally incorporated in my own palette of possibilities, ultimately shaping my own artistry.
Ultimately, the goal of this research project was to develop my artistic personality within their language, by becoming a creator in music and not only an interpreter. This DPerf portfolio, comprised of Artistic Projects, Professional Projects, Written Commentary and Supplementary Studies, was designed to contribute from different angles to the expansion of my own skills as a performer, composer, improvisor and mentor in the musical language shared by the cellists under study
Disjoint and external partial difference families and cyclotomy
In this Thesis, we introduce two new combinatorial objects known as Disjoint Partial Difference Families and External Partial Difference Families: these objects generalise Disjoint Difference Families (DDFs), External Difference Families
(EDFs) and Partial Difference Sets (PDSs), which have all been well-studied in the literature. We demonstrate how DPDFs and EPDFs can be formed from PDSs and Relative Difference Sets (RDSs), presenting both cyclotomic and non-cyclotomic constructions of these objects.
We also develop two new cyclotomic frameworks within this Thesis, which allow us to identify new cyclotomic constructions of DPDFs and EPDFs along with other types of difference structures. The first of these cyclotomic frameworks
relies upon a series of partition results, the second utilises natural connections between cyclotomic numbers and cyclotomic cosets. These frameworks remove the need to evaluate all cyclotomic numbers in a particular finite field.
We primarily use these frameworks to identify new DPDF and EPDF constructions, however, we also use the cyclotomic techniques underpinning these frameworks to establish a series of algorithms that compute the cyclotomic numbers in a given finite field. Further, we use one of these frameworks to prove that a PDS with Denniston parameters exists in the group Z_3^9: as 3 is an odd prime, it was previously believed that such a PDS would not exist in this group
Controllable suppression of the unconventional superconductivity in bulk and thin-film Sr2RuO4 via high-energy electron irradiation

Open access publication funded by Max Planck Society.In bulk Sr2RuO4, the strong sensitivity of the superconducting transition temperature Tc to nonmagnetic impurities provides robust evidence for a superconducting order parameter that changes sign around the Fermi surface. In superconducting epitaxial thin-film Sr2RuO4, the relationship between Tc and the residual resistivity ρ0, which in bulk samples is taken to be a proxy for the low-temperature elastic scattering rate, is far less clear. Using high-energy electron irradiation to controllably introduce point disorder into bulk single-crystal and thin-film Sr2RuO4, we show that Tc is suppressed in both systems at nearly identical rates. This suggests that part of ρ0 in films comes from defects that do not contribute to superconducting pairbreaking and establishes a quantitative link between the superconductivity of bulk and thin-film samples.Peer reviewe
Towards a lifelong personalized brain health program : empowering individuals to define, pursue, and monitor meaningful outcomes
Incorporating person-centered outcomes into clinical trials for neurodegenerative diseases has been challenging due to a deficiency in quantitative measures. Meanwhile, the integration of personally meaningful treatment targets in clinical practice remains qualitative, failing to truly inform evaluations, therapeutic interventions and longitudinal monitoring and support. We discuss the current advances and future directions in capturing individualized brain health outcomes and present an approach to integrate person-centered outcome in a scalable manner. Our approach stems from the evidence-based electronic Person-Specific Outcome Measure (ePSOM) program which prompts an individual to define personally meaningful treatment priorities and report level of confidence in managing items that matter to the individual the most (e.g., "Do I feel confident in my ability to contribute to a conversation?"). Deployed either as a single version (person only) or a dyad version (person and care partner), our proposed tool could be used as an endpoint in clinical trials, offering proof of meaningful intervention benefits and in clinical practice, by establishing an anchor for the therapeutic objectives sought by the individual.Peer reviewe
The immobilization of a cyclodipeptide synthase enables biocatalysis for cyclodipeptide production

Many CDPSs, however, suffer from instability and poor recyclability, while enzyme immobilization can enhance catalyst efficiency and reuse. Here, the CDPS enzyme from Parcubacteria bacterium RAAC4_OD1_1 was immobilized using three different supports: biochar from waste materials, calcium-alginate beads, and chitosan beads. Immobilization of active PbCDPS was successful, and production of the cyclodipeptide cyclo (His-Glu) (cHE) was confirmed by HPLC-MS. Biochar from spent coffee activated with glutaraldehyde, alginate beads, and chitosan beads activated with glutaraldehyde led to a 5-fold improvement in cHE production, with the immobilized enzyme remaining active for seven consecutive cycles. Furthermore, we co-immobilized three enzymes participating in the cascade reaction yielding cHE (PbCDPS, histidyl-tRNA synthetase, and glutamyl-tRNA synthetase). The enzymatic cascade successfully produced the cyclic dipeptide, underscoring the potential of immobilizing various enzymes within a single support. Importantly, we demonstrated that tRNAs remained free in solution and were not adsorbed by the beads. We paved the way for the immobilization of enzymes that utilize tRNAs and other complex substrates, thereby expanding the range of reactions that can be exploited by using this technology.Peer reviewe
A new 3D full-Stokes calving algorithm within Elmer/Ice (v9.0)

Thomas Zwinger has been supported by the Finnish Academy COLD consortium (grant no. 322978).A new calving algorithm is developed in the glacier model Elmer/Ice that allows unrestricted calving and terminus advance in 3D. The algorithm uses the meshing software Mmg to implement anisotropic remeshing and allow mesh adaptation at each time step. The development of the algorithm, along with the implementation of the crevasse depth law, produces a new full-Stokes calving model capable of simulating calving and terminus advance across an array of complex geometries. Using a synthetic tidewater glacier geometry, the model is tested to highlight the numerical model parameters that can alter calving when using the crevasse depth law. For a system with no clear attractor at a pinning point, the model time step and mesh resolution are shown to alter the simulated calving. In particular, the vertical mesh resolution has a large impact, increasing calving, as the frontal bending stresses are better resolved. However, when the system has a strong attractor, provided by basal pinning points, numerical model parameters have a limited effect on the terminus evolution. Conversely, transient systems with no clear attractors are highly influenced by the choice of numerical model parameters. The new algorithm is capable of implementing unlimited terminus advance and retreat, as well as unrestricted calving geometries, applying any vertically varying melt distribution to the front for use in conjunction with any calving law or potentially advecting variables downstream. In overcoming previous technical hurdles, the algorithm opens up the opportunity to improve both our understanding of the physical processes and our ability to predict calving.Peer reviewe
Intersecting social and environmental determinants of multidrug-resistant urinary tract infections in East Africa beyond antibiotic use

This paper was funded in part by a grant from the National Institutes of Health (grant number U01CA207167, J.S.), and a Scottish Funding Council GCRF Consolidator Award (K.K., W.S.).The global health crisis of antibacterial resistance (ABR) poses a particular threat in low-resource settings like East Africa. Interventions for ABR typically target antibiotic use, overlooking the wider set of factors which drive vulnerability and behaviours. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the joint contribution of behavioural, environmental, socioeconomic, and demographic factors associated with higher risk of multi-drug resistant urinary tract infections (MDR UTIs) in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. We sampled outpatients with UTI symptoms in healthcare facilities and linked their microbiology data with patient, household and community level data. Using bivariate statistics and Bayesian profile regression on a sample of 1610 individuals, we show that individuals with higher risk of MDR UTIs were more likely to have compound and interrelated social and environmental disadvantages: they were on average older, with lower education, had more chronic illness, lived in resource-deprived households, more likely to have contact with animals, and human or animal waste. This suggests that interventions to tackle ABR need to take account of intersectional socio-environmental disadvantage as a priority.Peer reviewe
Foundations of entrepreneurial ecosystems configurations

Bruno Fischer also acknowledges funding from the Basic Research Program of the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) and the Russian Academic Excellence Project ‘5-100’.The literature on Entrepreneurial Ecosystems (EE) originated from assessments of highly successful cases. While this has produced useful insights, it has also generated a sense of isomorphism, seldomly reflecting the entrepreneurial dynamics taking place in a variety of contexts. In this article we critically discuss a selection of underlying issues associated with the configurations of entrepreneurial ecosystems, as well as influential dimensions that are attached to their respective structures, components and interaction dynamics. We argue that ‘generic’ configurations of EE can only offer a limited (if not inaccurate) comprehension of EE dynamics. We propose that ecosystems configurations emerge as outcomes of an interplay involving layers of micro (Entrepreneurial Agency, Socio-Cultural Embeddedness), meso (Sectoral Orientation) and macro (Spatial Features, Historical Trajectories) determinants. These dimensions conform a background that deeply affects the configurations of EE in terms of agents, institutions and interaction dynamics. Understanding the sources of heterogeneity of EE configurations and their respective co-evolutionary nature can provide key insights towards a theory of EE that accommodates distinct manifestations of this phenomenon. We conclude the discussion by outlining a meta-configurational framework to guide future research on this topic of growing relevance.Peer reviewe
On what matters for obligations to refugees
Rindermann et al.’s article concludes that certain refugees may have a lower IQ and as a result may not provide as significant an economic contribution to host states compared to the average citizen, and so may be an economic cost. This commentary first casts doubt on this conclusion. It then, and most importantly, demonstrates that even if this conclusion were true, it would be irrelevant insofar as it would have no moral or legal significance in mitigating or defeating obligations towards refugees. The commentary shows that any normative view that IQ and economic contributions can mitigate or defeat obligations to provide protection has unacceptable implications. The commentary then demonstrates that legal and moral obligations to refugees are in no part contingent on IQ and economic contributions and to suppose otherwise would simply represent a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature, grounds, and weight of obligations towards refugees. Hence, supposed IQ or economic contributions are entirely irrelevant to, and cannot undermine the strength of, refugees’ claims to protection nor states’ obligations to provide it.Peer reviewe
