Henselt’s pianism through his music and related composers
Adolf von Henselt was a German virtuoso pianist and composer of the Romantic period. His early musical training in Germany established his strong musical identity, which he later carried to Russia, his adopted homeland for the remainder of his life. Henselt’s music is characterised by lyrical, poetic melodies combined with technically demanding pianistic writing. He played a pivotal role in bridging German and Russian musical traditions, significantly influencing Russian musicians.
Although Henselt’s compositional output was not as extensive as that of contemporaries such as Franz Liszt and Robert Schumann, his work had a profound impact. He drew inspiration from Carl Maria von Weber and Ludwig van Beethoven, which in turn inspired Russian composers like Balakirev, Lyapunov, and even Rachmaninov. These influences are central to my performance projects.
This written commentary provides a scholarly examination of Henselt’s background, biography, and compositions. Additionally, it investigates the significant relationships and mutual influences between Henselt and his contemporaries.
Chapters One and Two focus on Adolf von Henselt and his music, while Chapters Three to Five explore the influences of his German contemporaries and his subsequent impact on Russian composers.
The doctoral Artistic Projects include solo and chamber performances of well-known and lesser-known works by Henselt (Artistic Project 1 and 3), performances of his piano solo arrangements of works by German composer Weber (Artistic Project 2), and performances of pieces by Russian composers who were influenced by Henselt, such as Balakirev and Lyapunov, in comparison with Henselt’s own music (Development Project)
The midlife health of only children : chronic disease indicators and biomarkers by sibship size in three nationally representative UK cohorts

Recent evidence from Nordic countries about only children having poorer health outcomes may not apply elsewhere because selection processes differ across contexts. We investigate the midlife health of only children in the UK where one-child families tend to be socio-economically advantaged relative to large families. Methods Using the 1946, 1958 and 1970 British birth cohort studies, we examine various biomarkers and self-reported measures of chronic disease by sibship size when respondents are aged in their mid-40s, mid-50s and mid-60s. We estimate separate linear probability models for each cohort, age and outcome, adjusting for childhood and early adulthood circumstances. Results We found no evidence of only children differing from those with one, two or three or more siblings, at any age, in any of the cohorts, on: heart problems, hypertension, high triglycerides, high glycated haemoglobin or high C-reactive protein. However, compared with only children, the probability for cancer (0.019, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.002, 0.035; age 46/1970) and poor general health (0.060, CI: 0.015, 0.127; age 55/1958; and 0.110, CI: 0.052, 0.168; age 63/1946) was higher among those with three or more siblings. Conclusions There is no consistent pattern of only child health disadvantage for midlife chronic disease outcomes across ages or cohorts in the UK. Research should focus on better understanding how sibship size differentials are contingent on context.Peer reviewe
Measuring episodic memory and mental time travel : crossing the species gap

E.C. was supported by an AHRC studentship through the Northern Bridge DTP.Mental time travel is the projection of the mind into the past or future, and relates to experiential aspects of episodic memory, and episodic future thinking. Framing episodic memory and future thinking in this way causes a challenge when studying memory in animals, where demonstration of this mental projection is prevented by the absence of language. However, there is good evidence that non-human animals pass tests of episodic memory that are based on behavioural criteria, meaning a better understanding needs to be had of the relationship between episodic memory and mental time travel. We argue that mental time travel and episodic memory are not synonymous, and that mental time travel is neither a requirement of, nor an irrelevance to, episodic memory. Mental time travel can allow improved behavioural choices based on episodic memory, and work in all species (including humans) should include careful consideration of the behavioural outputs being measured.Peer reviewe
The genome sequence of the Brown Long-eared bat, Plecotus auritus (Linnaeus 1758)

The genome sequence is 2163.2 megabases in span. Most of the assembly is scaffolded into 16 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the X sex chromosome. New insights into Sistani intellectual culture under the Saffarids

H. Morton Scholarship by The Gibb Memorial Trust.This article investigates patterns of scholarly patronage relating to Khalaf b. Aḥmad (r. 963–1003 CE, d. 1009), placing them in their broader Saffarid and regional contexts. Of the extant works we can link to Khalaf, a little studied medical text, the Kunnāsh, is arguably the single most insightful in exposing Khalaf as patron and in placing him in the context of earlier and later Saffarid and Sistani support for the medical sciences. The article argues that Khalaf being both an author of a work on dream interpretation and a patron of medical literature is not a combination unique to him. In fact, it fits rather well with the pattern of patronage activities of the Khwārazmshāhs in the early eleventh century. This study suggests that Eastern Iranian areas may have developed a greater degree of self-definition as intellectual centres of scholarship than previously acknowledged, and that this will have happened both through competition with one another and by retelling their legacies of past patronage.Peer reviewe
Relief in the round : terracotta classicism and the Homeric friezes of Ickworth House
A growing body of work examines the British elite’s engagement with sculpture in the long eighteenth century, focusing especially on free-standing works. This article adopts a different angle by exploring the use of relief sculpture attached to a building’s exterior. For its case study, it discusses the remarkable programme of Homeric scenes modelled in terracotta, stucco and Coade stone that runs around the central rotunda of Ickworth House in Suffolk, which are largely based on John Flaxman’s celebrated illustrations. Falling somewhere between art and architectural history, relief tends to be regarded as a secondary or ornamental mode, yet it is productive to study the form for the different opportunities it affords artists and patrons. While individual relief panels have received attention in interior settings such as sculpture galleries where the form’s pictorial effects are foregrounded, this article is more interested in relief’s narrative qualities and the ways it blurs distinctions between building and sculptural object. Instead of partitioning the study of sculpture into interior and exterior or house and garden, this article explores the Italian and Hellenic influences at play at Ickworth, which enable its series of reliefs to enjoy an active, reciprocal relationship with the building to which they are attached.Peer reviewe
In-situ observations of resident space objects with the CHEOPS space telescope

TWi acknowledges support from the UKSA and the University of Warwick.The CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite (CHEOPS) is a partnership between the European Space Agency and Switzerland with important contributions by 10 additional ESA member States. It is the first S-class mission in the ESA Science Programme. CHEOPS has been flying on a Sun-synchronous low Earth orbit since December 2019, collecting millions of short-exposure images in the visible domain to study exoplanet properties. A small yet increasing fraction of CHEOPS images show linear trails caused by resident space objects crossing the instrument field of view. CHEOPS’ orbit is indeed particularly favourable to serendipitously detect objects in its vicinity as the spacecraft rarely enters the Earth's shadow, sits at an altitude of 700 km, and observes with moderate phase angles relative to the Sun. This observing configuration is quite powerful, and it is complementary to optical observations from the ground. To characterize the population of satellites and orbital debris observed by CHEOPS, all and every science images acquired over the past 3 years have been scanned with a Hough transform algorithm to identify the characteristic linear features that these objects cause on the images. Thousands of trails have been detected. This statistically significant sample shows interesting trends and features such as an increased occurrence rate over the past years as well as the fingerprint of the Starlink constellation. The cross-matching of individual trails with catalogued objects is underway as we aim to measure their distance at the time of observation and deduce the apparent magnitude of the detected objects. As space agencies and private companies are developing new space-based surveillance and tracking activities to catalogue and characterize the distribution of small debris, the CHEOPS experience is timely and relevant. With the first CHEOPS mission extension currently running until the end of 2026, and a possible second extension until the end of 2029, the longer time coverage will make our dataset even more valuable to the community, especially for characterizing objects with recurrent crossings.Peer reviewe
A sequential leaching protocol for δ11B and trace element analyses of multi-phase carbonate rocks

However, application to geological carbonate deposits suffers from analytical difficulties in obtaining geochemical signals exclusively from the carbonate phase. Sequential leaching with reagents and acids has the potential to overcome such an issue. There is, however, little systematic investigation about the efficiency of sequential leaching in isolating carbonate-associated boron from siliciclastic matrix. Here, we developed a sequential leaching protocol and applied it to methane-derived-authigenic-carbonate samples. Using the leachate δ11B signatures, elemental composition, and mineral composition of residues, we show that the sequential leaching is able to improve the separation of boron from different phases. Buffered hydrogen peroxide removes organic matter and also some silicate phases resulting low δ11B values. Leaching with NH4Ac removes adsorbed boron though may also partially leach some carbonate phases. The first few leaching steps with diluted acetic acid dissolve carbonate phases. Depending on the sample type, these may also capture some remaining adsorbed boron from the preceding NH4Ac leaching. Once the adsorbed boron is completely removed, as indicated by the progressively higher δ11B values during the following acid leaching steps, representative carbonate composition can be derived. The accuracy of this protocol is demonstrated with leaching experiments using artificial deep sea coral carbonate and clay mixtures that give the representative carbonate-associated δ11B within error of the pure coral value. Our results provide insights into characteristic signatures derived from silicates and organic matter that need to be considered in boron isotope analyses of impure marine carbonates.Peer reviewe

B. thanks to MHRD, Govt. of India for providing re-search fellowship.Image-guided photodynamic therapy has been acknowledged as one of the most demonstrative therapeutic modalities for cancer treatment because of its high precision, non-invasiveness, and improved imaging ability. A series of purely organic photosensitizers, denoted as BTMCz, BTMPTZ, and BTMPXZ, have been designed and synthesized and are found to exhibit both thermally activated delayed fluorescence and aggregation-induced emission simultaneously. Experimental and theoretical studies were combined to reveal that modulation of the donor of the photosensitizer enables distinct thermally activated delayed fluorescence via a second-order spinorbit perturbation mechanism involving lowest singlet charge-transfer and higher-lying triplet locally excited states, respectively. Further, different donor strengths and unique aggregations (H-, J- and Xtype packings) greatly influence their color-tunable up-converted luminescence and endow them with superb dispersibility in water. The confocal microscopy-based cellular uptake study confirms the successful internalization of the nano-probes. At the same time, BTMCz enables the generation of reactive oxygen species (singlet oxygen) under white-light irradiation, enabling the efficient killing of cancer cells.Peer reviewe
What about the children? The effectiveness of including children in environmental appeals
Funding: This project was supported by funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) under grant agreement ES/P002463/1.Despite many environmental campaigns putting children front and center, the effectiveness of including children in environmental appeals has not been tested. Across four online experiments (N = 2,200), participants saw either an existing Friends of the Earth appeal or matching appeals that made children salient. All experiments assessed real donations to Friends of the Earth as a behavioral outcome measure. The results showed that making children salient elicited lower donations relative to the standard Friends of the Earth appeal, and this effect was partially explained by lower persuasiveness of arguments in the campaign text (despite the arguments being identical between conditions). The findings suggest that the inclusion of children in appeals can backfire, with important ramifications for environmental campaigning.Peer reviewe
