'Islamic' consumers, markets, and marketing:acritique of El-Bassiouny's (2014) "the one-billion-plus marginalization"
No full textIn her article entitled "The one-billion-plus marginalization: Toward a scholarly understanding of Islamic consumers", El-Bassiouny (2014) attempts to provide "a comprehensive conceptualization for Islamicmarketing and its foundational principles within the context of the Islamic faith" (p. 48). The present essay critiques some of the key assumptions that underpin El-Bassiouny's discussion and her subsequent propositions for "future testing", which aremeant to offer an "enlightened understanding of Islamic consumers" and "benefit academics, practitioners, and policymakers" (pp. 42-43). This critical account argues: (1) apolitical and ahistorical analyses of markets and marketing phenomena in relation to Moslem geographies will only replicate imaginary juxtapositions between the West and Islam; (2) exceptionalist depictions of Moslem consumers can exacerbate inter- and/or intra-cultural misunderstandings; (3) theological and ethnocentric definitions of Islam and the oversimplification of Islamicness are less likely to help advance marketing theory, practice, and education in a global era
Mean-risk stochastic electricity generation expansion planning problems with demand uncertainties considering conditional-value-at-risk and maximum regret as risk measures
No full textThis paper focused on solving electricity generation expansion planning problems where there are uncertainties associated with the electricity demand forecasts. The electricity expansion plans are long-term commitments and affects people’s living conditions and business prosperity deeply. Therefore it is reasonable that the decision makers may be risk averse. In this paper, mathematical models are developed to incorporate the risk aversion into the generation expansion planning problems. We use the conditional-value-at-risk and maximum regret as risk measures and the results shows that the investment plans are affected when the risk is considered
A penalty search algorithm for the obstacle neutralization problem
No full textWe consider a path planning problem wherein an agent needs to swiftly navigate from a source to a destination through an arrangement of obstacles in the plane. We suppose the agent has a limited neutralization capability in the sense that it can safely pass through an obstacle upon neutralization at a cost added to the traversal length. The agent׳s goal is to find the sequence of obstacles to be neutralized en route that minimizes the overall traversal length subject to the neutralization limit. We call this problem the obstacle neutralization problem (ONP), which is essentially a variant of the intractable weight-constrained shortest path problem in the literature. In this study, we propose a simple, yet efficient and effective suboptimal algorithm for ONP based on the idea of penalty search and we present special cases where our algorithm is provably optimal. Computational experiments involving both real and synthetic naval minefield data are also presented
Cloud based virtualization for a calorie measurement e-health mobile application
No full textSmartphones have transformed people approach towards technology. It not only empowers them to use it for communication but also for tracking and maintaining health-fitness via mobile applications. With the increasing number of complex mobile applications, the mobile, with its limited resources (in terms of the computational power and storage capacity) cannot efficiently run these applications autonomously. Similarly our e-health mobile application (Eat Healthy Stay Healthy) requires a platform to run highly computational intensive algorithms like the deep learning (for recognizing food images) and calorie measurement would need higher processing power to perform optimally. We propose a cloud based virtualization model that provides our e-health application with the required computational power that it needs to perform efficiently and at the same time would also give it the flexibility to make use of the various cloud resources. Our model comprises of concepts like virtual swap between various mobile sessions that assist the system for faster processing and intelligent decision mechanism for distributing the task of image processing to cloud servers. By implementing intelligent decision mechanism, the final calorie computation significantly improved by 20.5% while implementing deep learning in cloud

The emergence of think tanks and mediator intellectuals in Turkey
No full textTezin basılısı İstanbul Şehir Üniversitesi Kütüphanesi'ndedir.This study examines the rise and development of think tanks in Turkey over the past five decades from a field-analytical perspective. In spite of the rapid growth and increasing effects of think tanks, few case studies have been conducted on the historical and current influences of these institutions in Turkey. Based on fourteen in-depth interviews with staff members of various think tanks, first hand observations, secondary resources, and descriptive statistical data, this dissertation aims to fill the void by presenting both a historical outline and present day landscape of the think tank field. As distinct from the large part of the existing literature on think tanks in political science and international relations, this analysis presented here also attaches particular importance to understand the dynamics of knowledge production as well as the modes of intellectual intervention that think tanks undertake, relocating the issue in the sociology of intellectuals. The historical analysis argues that although the earliest think tanks outcropped in the 1960s, think tanks began to exhibit field-like properties in the mid-1990s. A virtualization mechanism for real-time multimedia-assisted mobile food recognition application in cloud computing
No full textThe integration of multimedia-assisted healthcare systems with could-computing services and mobile technologies has led to increased accessibility for healthcare providers and patients. Utilizing cloud computing infrastructures and virtualization technologies allows for the transformation of traditional healthcare systems that demand manual care and monitoring to more salient, automatic and cost effective systems. The goal of this paper is to develop a multimedia-assisted mobile healthcare application using cloud-computing virtualization technologies. We consider calorie measurement as an example healthcare application that can benefit from cloud-computing virtualization technology. The key functionalities of our application entail image segmentation, image processing and deep learning algorithms for food classification and recognition. Client side devices (e.g. smartphones, tablets etc.) have limitations in handling time sensitive and computationally intensive algorithms pertained to our application. Image processing and deep learning algorithms, used in food recognition and calorie measurement, consume devices’ batteries quickly, which is inconvenient for the user. It is also very challenging for client side devices to scale for large number of data and images, as needed for food recognition. The entire process is time-consuming and inefficient and discomforting from users’ perspective and may deter them from using the application. In this paper, we address these challenges by proposing a virtualization mechanism in cloud computing that utilizes the Android architecture. Android allows for parting an application into activities run by the front-end user and services run by the back-end tasks. In the proposed virtualization mechanism, we use both the hosted and the hypervisor models to publish our Android-based food recognition and calorie measurement application in the cloud. By so doing, the users of our application can control their virtual smartphone operations through a dedicated client application installed on their smartphones, while the processing of the application continue to run on the virtual Android image even if the user is disconnected due to any unexpected event. We have performed several experiments to validate our mechanism. Specifically, we have run our deep learning and image processing algorithms for food recognition on different configuration platforms on both the cloud and local server connected to the mobile. The results show that the accuracy of the system with the virtualization mechanism is more than 94.33 % compared to 87.16 % when we run the application locally. Also, with our virtualization mechanism the results are processed 49 % faster than the case of running the application locally
Talking about behaviors in the passive voice increases task performance
No full textSelf-talk can help people redirect their attention focused on themselves to the tasks they are working on with important consequences for their task performance. Across four experiments and two different types of languages, Turkish and Slovak, people describing their own behaviors to themselves, as well as merely reading or writing sentences depicting some fictitious events, in the passive (vs. the active) voice performed better on various tasks of motor and verbal performance. The effect was present to the extent that people maintained their control over task-distracting thoughts or felt more responsible for their task success/failure. In sum, talking about task behaviors in the passive voice may increase the perceived role of task-related factors while decreasing the role of agent-related factors in achieving task success, whereby the task focus, hence performance, increases. Learning effects of an international group competition project
No full textThis study investigates the effects of collaboration and competition on students’ learning performance in a course of business statistics. The collaboration involved a simultaneously organised group competition project with analysis of real-life business problems among students. Students from the following schools participated: JAMK University of Applied Sciences in Finland, Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain, and Sabanci University in Turkey. The results support earlier literature on positive impacts of group collaboration on learning performance but deny any negative impacts of competition. It is also found out that learning performance may be influenced to a certain degree by cultural differences in perceptions towards collaboration and competition. Overall the international competition and the touch to real-life business problems stimulate students’ engagement and result in enhanced learning towards becoming ‘intelligent consumers of business statistics’
