A conceptual view of exergy destruction in mergers and acquisitions

Company mergers are complex where several firm-specific and contextual factors interact with each other impacting the outcome of the process. Although many firms merge with or acquire others to increase the value of their firms, have more market power and gain more ability to negotiate with suppliers or customers, most of mergers and acquisitions result in failures. Despite the poor performances, firms continue to merge and acquire. The existing literature on the other hand lacks in providing a robust theory to the issue of poor post-merger performance. This study thus responds to exploring the issue of high failure rates in mergers and acquisitions in an entirely different way. As the first output of a research programme on the conceptual, theoretical and empirical issues in merger and acquisitions research, we conceptualize the loss of performance or exergy in mergers and acquisitions using thermodynamic analysis of the mixing process in physical systems. Three propositions are developed that conceptualize the ideal conditions for mergers in terms of firm size, relatedness between the merging firms and the ambient states. The exergy loss due to merging increases with the increasing levels of strategic or cultural incompatibility between the two firms. When the sizes of two firms differ, it is preferable for the larger firm to have higher knowledge base than the smaller firm. Lastly, the knowledge intensity of the country that the merging takes place as well as the relative knowledge base of the merging firms do interact and change the post-merger performance significantly

Evaluation of biofouling behavior of zwitterionic silane coated reverse osmosis membranes fouled by marine bacteria

    No full text
Zwitterionic modification of membrane surfaces is a promising approach to decrease membrane biofouling. In this study, biofouling properties of two commercial polyamide (PA) reverse osmosis (RO) desalination mem- branes coated with zwitterionic sulfobetaine silane compounds including4-(diethyl(3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl) ammonia)butane-1-sulfonate (EPBS) and 3-(dimethyl(3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl)ammonia)propane-1-sulfonate (MPPS) were investigated using five different marine bacteria isolated from Bosphorus, Turkey. To mimic the real environment, new marine strains were isolated for the biofouling assay. The biofouling behavior was monitored at different maturation stages of biofouling bacteria on the surfaces of the membranes. In addition, the permeability variation of the coated membranes was analyzed by measuring the flux values before and after the biofouling process compared to the uncoated, control membrane. According to the results, while commercial control RO membranes were highly prone to biofouling, zwitterionic sulfobetaine silane coated membranes showed a strong anti-bacterial effect against the isolated marine biofouling bacteria with significant bio-film adhesion resistance. When the flux value of commercial uncoated control membrane decreased by 38% after biofouling, the flux reduction was 16% and 20% in the EPBS and MPPS coated membranes, respectively

A hundred years of Mardin as a modern city in the case of Birinci Cadde (the First Avenue) and Halkevi (the People’s House)

Early cinema-going and the emergence of film culture: The first Pathé Cinema Theatre opens in Istanbul (1908).

On January 30th, 1908 the Pathé Frères Cinema Theatre, the first cinema-specific building, opened in Istanbul. Istanbul newspapers watched Pathé closely and kept their readers up- to-date on the recent developments in and around the cinema. In this essay, by extracting utterances (‘boring/interesting’, ‘technically successful/blurry images’, etc.) from the newspapers I will attempt to trace the institutionalisation of cinema-going and the emergence of film culture in Istanbul. News, news articles and advertisements in the newspapers provided the reader (ie, the potential viewer) with the terms to think with about cinema. These were not simply judgement values, the discourses around Pathé also cued the audience as to which horizon of expectations to employ. It is intriguing that these discourses tied technological perfection to the viewer’s aesthetic experience, putting emphasis on the realism of the images, voicing a demand for synchronisation of sound and image, and finally verisimilitude

Understanding whatsapp parent groups' dynamics: Group communication and information sharing

    No full text
This paper presents a study of WhatsApp group communication through a case study which is not searched scholarly yet, thus plans to contribute to this recent area of WhatsApp studies. WhatsApp is a widespread mobile messaging application, which changes the way that people communicate with each other. The instant messaging tool allows users to send messages not only in text forms but also in the video, audio and picture forms. Particularly it has become quite common to create groups for informal purposes among friends or for more formal purposes among colleagues. Recently WhatsApp parent groups have turned out to be a popular subject but yet only been discussed widely in popular media environments such as daily newspapers or in some blogs or online forums. This kind of group can be considered as an informal group where the determination of coming together is a mutual interest. This research aims to widen the academic study area of WhatsApp by analyzing the dynamics of group communication through this application. To this end, firstly the development of WhatsApp groups and its characteristics and the differences between offline informal groups and online informal groups in terms of effective communication, peer relation and decision making will be interrogated. Then taking into account the social presence theory and the idea of being aware of communicating with somebody; WhatsApp parent group will be analyzed from the point of view of establishing a personal connection. As the research part of this study collected 6578 messages from a WhatsApp parent group will be evaluated by using content analysis. The results will be stimulating to understand and to explore the dynamics of WhatsApp parent group with regard to group communication and information sharing

Turkey's rapprochement with Russia: Assertive bandwagoning

Despite Russia’s increasing clout and assertiveness in its region, Turkey has chosen to improve its relations with Russia, rather than balance against it through its Western allies. Turkey’s unexpected strategic partnership with Russia is best seen as an example of bandwagoning for profit. It is an assertive bandwagoning with the objective of counter- ing Kurdish separatism, an imminent problem in the Turkish ruling elite’s ranking of threat perceptions. The empowerment of Syrian Kurdish groups under the protection of the United States has moved Turkey closer to Russia. A long-term alliance between the two, how- ever, depends on reconciliation of their differences which are deeply rooted in historical and geo-political factors

Culturally adapted transdiagnostic CBT for SSRI-Resistant Turkish adolescents:a pilot study

    No full text
The most common mental health problems among adolescents are anxiety and mood disorders. While disorder-specific cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is effective for each of these conditions, the comorbidity between anxiety and mood disorders indicates a need for the development of evidence-based transdiagnostic treatments. To examine the efficacy of culturally adapted transdiagnostic ('It'!' (CA-('BT) in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression in treatment resistant Turkish adolescents, 13 adolescent participants with anxiety or mood disorders who were treatment resistant received 10 sessions of CA-CBT in group format. The main outcome measures were the Screen for Childhood Child Anxiety Related Disorders (SCARED), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Turkish Symptom and Syndrome Addendum (TSSA), which were assessed at baseline, posttreatment, and at 2-month follow-up. At posttreatment, there were large effect sizes for all measures: depression scores (BDI, d =.9), anxiety scores (SCARED, d.1), and the Turkish Symptom and Syndrome Addendum (TSSA, d 1.6). Moreover, at 2-month follow-up, depression and anxiety symptoms were either maintained or continued to improve such that from pretreatment to follow-up the effect sizes were as follows: depression scores (1)1, d = 1.4), anxiety scores (SCARED, d = 1.7), and the Turkish Symptom and Syndrome Addendum (TSSA, d 2.4). In addition, there were no dropouts across treatment. This open trial suggests that CA-CUT is effective in reducing anxiety and depression symptoms and that the treatment is well accepted. A full randomized controlled trial to verify the effectiveness of transdiagnostic CA-CBT in similar populations is needed
