The method and evolution of the critical-editions by Ali Nihat Tarlan

    No full text
Critical-edition is among the most used apparatuses for the scientific methodology in classical Turkish literature. Ali Nihat Tarlan, one of the founders of the discipline called classical Turkish literature in the Turkish universities, has practiced a few scientific examples of critical- editions. Therefore, to examine his critical-editions and their evolutions, means to examine the evolution of the history of the critical-edition in Turkey, too. In that context, the main subject of this article is to handle all of the critical-editions has done by Ali Nihat Tarlan and accordingly the aim of the article is to reveal the evolution of the method used in those works. It is quite natural that Ali Nihat Tarlan was in a constant quest to reach a more scientific methodology in terms of main characteristics of critical-edition

Class and art in E. M. Forster's Howards end

    Get PDF
Howards End presents a world in flux and mobility in the advent of modernism where art and literature are tested for their ability to save the individual in the context of a quest for an English house, Howards End, which on a symbolic level represents not only the English but all humanity. Forster shows the world of literature and art in a very pessimistic and critical way with an emphasis on the lower-class’ futile striving for art and culture and on the over determination of class differences even for a cultivated upper-class individual with socialist aspirations. The destruction of the lower class, represented by Leonard, by the two upper-class families, the Schlegels, representing the German idealism and the Wilcoxes, the brutal capitalists, shows that appreciation of art does not make the refined mind immune to sharing a common ground with the philistine upper-class. Forster suggests that literature does not have the power to change the society, and that class and gender hierarchy cannot be overcome by literature or art

Bank lending channel in a dual banking system:why are Islamic banks so responsive?

    Get PDF
The bank lending channel posits that central banks—at least in part—can control banking sector’s ability to lend by adjusting the reserve supply via open market operations. On a contractionary policy, open market operations of central banks drain reserves and hence deposits from the banking system. If banks are not able to find alternative sources of funding to compensate for this deposit withdrawal, the supply of bank loans will decrease. Although this spillover chain is well established for varying size (Kashyap & Stein, 1995; Stein & Kashyap, 2000), liquidity (Ashcraft, 2006; Stein & Kashyap, 2000) and capitalisation (Kishan & Opiela, 2000) of banks, there is still lack of evidence on how this mechanism works for different bank types. Studying the monetary transmission mechanism for different bank types is relevant because it may have different impacts on bank lending. This is especially important to identify how effectively central banks can influence the level of reserves (deposits) and, as a consequence, bank lending (credits). In this study, we empirically compare the bank lending channel in a dual banking system where Islamic and conventional banks operate side by side. Since the bank lending channel incorporates the behaviour of customers and creditors in a single transmission mechanism, we will be able to understand different behavioural patterns of both of these groups in different banking schemes

Machiavelli's realist ımage of humanity and his justification of the state

    No full text
This article examines Machiavelli's image of humanity. It argues against the prevailing views that characterize it either as pessimistic or optimistic and defends the thesis that the Florentine has a realist image of humanity. Machiavelli is a psychological egoist who conceives of man as a being whose actions are motivated by his drives, appetites, and passions, which lead him often to immoral behavior. Man's main drives are "ambition" (ambizione) and "avarice" (avarizia). This article also investigates Machiavelli's concept of nature and shows that, for him, the constancy of human nature is the central premise that makes the scientific analysis of politics possible. Despite the fact that human drives and capabilities are the same at all times, good laws, military training, and religion allow man to be changed and educated toward "virtue" (virtu). To make such changes in man, however, presupposes a good legal and political order. Machiavelli justifies the state because of its capacity to reshape human nature and to improve man. The state is not only a coercive power but a moral institution. This leads to the conclusion that Machiavelli does not separate politics from morality as most scholars claim

Modeling airline MRO operations using a systems dynamics approach:a case study of Turkish Airlines

    No full text
Makale İstanbul Şehir Üniversitesi Endüstri Mühendisliği Bölümü ile Yönetim Bilişim Sistemleri Bölümü ortaklığında hazırlanmıştır.Purpose The life span of an aircraft is usually around 30 years in the commercial aviation industry. During this time span, aircraft needs maintenance to stay in service. The cost of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) activities in its pure nature is a significant portion of operations, accounting around 10 percent of all cost drivers. The purpose of this paper is to design/develop and critically assess a comprehensive model of operations at Turkish Technic - the MRO department of Turkish Airlines. Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive systems dynamics model is designed and developed to holistically represent and critically assess the different facets of MRO operations to help in analyzing various decision scenarios at Turkish Airlines. Findings The developed system dynamics (SD) model presented unique opportunities to test various MRO operations' work load and aircraft fleet expansion policy alternatives. The model can also be used as a learning laboratory by altering various system parameters and testing different policies. The case study results suggested that MRO operations have a direct impact on the available number of airworthy aircrafts and hence, the usable fleet seat capacity; to sustain a profitable airline fleet, the airline companies should take into account the unique characteristics/needs of MRO operations for both existing and new/prospective aircrafts. Originality/value There are several SD studies in the literature focusing on the airline industry, but the MRO operations are virtually neglected in them. Hence, the proposed SD model contributed to the extant literature. The value of the developed model stems from its potential use in the critical analysis of decision scenarios as well as being leveraged as a training/learning laboratory

Anti-immigrant attitudes and the dual cost of labor precarity for immigrants:the cases of Germany, France and the United Kingdom

    Get PDF
This study analyzes anti-immigrant attitudes of workers (as the dependent variable) in Germany, France and the United Kingdom through separate OLS models with individual variables in each country and finalize a multi-linear analysis by using the fourth and last wave of European Value Survey. In order to construct a theoretical depth for the empirical analysis, it utilizes three separate literatures on antiimmigrant attitudes, subjective job insecurity and labor precarity. Discussions on post-modern insecurity and the precariat as a class are also included. Findings reveal that subjective job insecurity in all three countries is one of the most remarkable predictors of negative attitudes towards immigrants. The main argument, as proven by the results is that, there is a dual cost of labor precarity for immigrants since they are also scapegoated as the cause of insecurity, in addition to be suffering from their own precariousness. Flexible labor-markets put immigrants in a more unsecured position in the society by way of the attitudes of native workers. The research also points out differences of the countries on matters of political culture, nationhood and labor-market policy while explaining differences among models.Öz ..................................................................................................................................... iv Abstract ............................................................................................................................. v Contents ........................................................................................................................... vi List of Figures and Tables ................................................................................................ vii 1Introduction .................................................................................................................1 2. Islam, socialism and the public sphere : the case of Emek ve Adalet Platformu

    Get PDF
This thesis analyzes the collaborative political project of the left wing and Islamic thought in Turkey. The relationship between left-wing thought in Islam, the public sphere, and democracy are absent from the main topics of discussion in the existing sociological literature. Nevertheless, the recent appearance of non-orthodox strands of Islamic political thought in the Turkish public sphere is noteworthy in a country where the state has traditionally sought to dominate discourses on religion and the economy. This thesis examines whether a collaborative discourse between the left and Islam can open up an enhanced, pluralistic, and inclusive public sphere using the case study of Emek ve Adalet Platformu. Emek ve Adalet Platformu (Labor and Justice Platform) is a movement that has attempted to unite Islamic and socialist sensibilities by taking the Quran’s approach to social justice as a reference point for solving social, economic, and political problems. Based on open-ended interviews with six activists in the movement, this thesis locates Emek ve Adalet Platformu as a reflection of sol ilahiyat (leftist theology) in the public sphere and analyzes the movement’s role there using the concepts of plurality, subaltern counterpublic, democratic ethos, and enlarged mentality. While these concepts do enable the movement to carve out a more pluralistic, inclusive space, certain factors internal to the movement limit its ability to open up the public sphere.Abstract ...................................................................................................................................... iv Öz ................................................................................................................................................ v Acknowledgements ................................................................................................................... vii Table Of Contents .................................................................................................................... viii CHAPTERS 1.
