The conceptual framework of this article is composed of "network society" (Van Dijk, 2016) and "digital activism" (Joyce, 2010). Van Dijk (2016) has observed the rise of the network society and according to that, he defines network society as communication networks that shape the most important forms of an organization in a society. The infrastructure of digital activism is based on the digital network (Joyce, 2010). With the influence of the new media, especially in the last decade, disability and methods of publicly representation the lives and experiences of people with disabilities have been witnessed and their ways of representing themselves have expanded. In the second half of the 20th century new social movements and digital activism have brought profound changes. The increasing global impact of wider human rights discourses has made possible a number of cultural representations that allow more progressive ways of seeing and understanding disability in different contexts. New media technologies offered new ways for citizens and movements to mobilize and organize themselves. In this context, the subject of this article is digitalized disability activism in Turkey. This article explores the opportunities and challenges in practice and disabled digital activism perspectives in Turkey. In this study, online media environments in Turkey such as the Internet newspapers, blogs, forums, social networking sites, especially Twitter contents were investigated via disabled keyword between 19-26 January 2019. Content analysis technique was used to evaluate the data sets and the findings were evaluated through descriptive method

Impact of channel scaling on performance of single SiC nanowire UV photodetector

    Get PDF
We have investigated the channel length dependence of the key performance parameters, such as speed, responsivity, external quantum efficiency (EQE), and responsivity-bandwidth product, of the silicon carbide nanowire-based ultraviolet (UV) photodetector devices with different channel lengths ranging from 120 to 800 nm. The device with the shortest channel length of 120 nm at low bias voltage of 0.5 Vexhibited very high responsivity and EQE of 7.73 x 10(3) A/W and 7.77 x 10(4)%, respectively, under illumination to 254-nm UV light. Our experiments revealed that reduction in channel length resulted in significant enhancement in speed, responsivity, EQE, and responsivity-bandwidth product of the photodetector. This study suggests that scaling down in channel length could enable the development of high-speed and sensitive photodetector devices for emerging nanophotonic and nanoelectronic applications capable of operating at low voltages. This thesis aims to ascertain the causes and effects of the scholarly mobility between the Persianate lands and the lands of Rum from the fourteenth century through the sixteenth century. This was an age of turmoil and change caused by the collapse of the Mongol Empire and rise of new empires in the Islamic lands. Based on the information from two biographical dictionaries, Al-Shaqaʾiq al-Nuʿmaniyya fi ʿUlama al-Dawla al-ʿUthmaniyya and Hadaʾiq al-Haqaʾiq, this thesis will explore how socio political changes in the region shaped the motivations behind scholarly mobility, with the focus on educational centers, career opportunities, and personal networks in the Persianate lands and the Ottoman Empire. It is hoped that this thesis will contribute to a better understanding of the motivations behind and the effects of scholarly mobility on Islamic intellectual traditions, especially the Ottoman intellectual tradition.Abstract ....................................................................................................................... iv Öz ................................................................................................................................. v Acknowledgements ..................................................................................................... vi Table of Contents ........................................................................................................vii List of Tables .................................................................................................................ix List of Graphs ............................................................................................................... x CHAPTERS 1. Çeviriye uyarlanmak:küreselleşen dünyada Orhan Pamuk romanları

    No full text
This thesis sets out to investigate how being written for translation shapes the very form and narration of the novels when international audiences are taken into account. Within this scope, I will tackle Orhan Pamuk’s three novels, Snow, The Museum of Innocence and A Strangeness in My Mind as case studies. I argue that Pamuk’s these novels are seemingly suited and written for translation although they owe their international success to other factors such as literary quality of his works, reviews, and extra textual elements as well. This study does not tackle all of his novels within this framework, though, as Pamuk’s works seem to experience a turning point compared to his early works. This study suggests that Cevdet Bey ve Oğulları/ Cevdet Bey and His Sons and Sessiz Ev/ The Silent House differ from these novels in that they can be positioned more within the Republican Literary Tradition. The term “self translation” (Paker 2004; Akbatur 2010) in a conceptual sense and “born-translated” concept (Walkowitz 2015) will underline the theoretical framework of this study. Analyzing some other authors from minor literatures to find out how they consider all the aspects from scratch regarding the prospective translation process, I will mainly dwell upon the key aspects of Pamuk’s writing aimed at a prospective translational process and provide various examples showing how he self translates the socio-cultural and political issues of his country for target readers as well as how he adjusts his discourse in his born-translated novels.Abstract .................................................................................................................................... iv Öz .............................................................................................................................................. v Acknowledgements .................................................................................................................. vi Table of Contents...................................................................................................................vii CHAPTERS 1. Biyopolitika bağlamında günümüz mültecileri ve sığınmacılar

Even though as a value, “life” is one of the inseparable parts of government agendas in modern world, we have been witnessing more and more deaths all over the world. While sometimes the death of someone creates a big drama, the death of huge number of refugees under bad conditions cannot arouse even sadness. Bringing forward reasons like terror, health or economic crisis, supposedly many “developed” countries do not allow refugees to enter their lands, even building walls to prevent them from crossing their borders. This creates a big paradox, that is, almost every child around the world is raised, believing certain international doctrines based on the sacredness of human life and equality among human beings without any discrimination. This thesis aims to analyze this striking but frequently ignored paradox. I will try to investigate the mentality behind the biopolitical management to reveal this paradox by proposing that this discussion can give us a new theoretical perspective in the issue. I will rest upon the works of Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben and Hannah Arendt to show how biopolitics has shaped today’s world, destroying most basic humanistic principles.ABSTRACT .................................................................................................................... iv ÖZ ................................................................................................................................. v ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS ............................................................................................... vi LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS............................................................................................. viii CHAPTERS I. Risk attitudes of Syrian refugees' decision-making and the kinship networks

    No full text
This master thesis aims to explore the risk attitudes of refugees in decision-making, as well as the kinship networks that get involved in this process. Decision-making routines collapse in catastrophic processes such as civil war, and individuals need to make vital choices in these periods where they cannot get help from their thinking practices. Each selection that is evaluated in migration decisions has high uncertainty, and these uncertainties cause the selection to be evaluated based on risk factors. This study focuses on a group of Syrian refugees related by kinship, using in-depth analysis methods to explore how decisions are taken in this process and explains their attitudes towards various situations in migration decisions through risk factors. This study also acknowledges the uniqueness of every refugee journey, and therefore focuses on the root causes of the choices made and places qualitative research methods at the center of its analysis. However, the measurement of attitudes is important for understanding the way individuals perceive situations, so the participants were also surveyed. To this end, this study aims to serve as a bridge by acknowledging refugee movements macro outcomes while exploring micro-factor in refugee journeys.Öz ............................................................................................. iv Abstract ...................................................................................... v Teşekkür .................................................................................... vi İçindekiler ................................................................................. vii Tablolar Listesi .......................................................................... ix Şekiller ve Görseller Listesi ........................................................... x BÖLÜMLER 1. Sadr Hareketi-İran ilişkilerinin arasındaki dinamikler 2003-2018:bir toplumsal hareketler teorisi perspektifi

The study of armed non-state actors (ANSAs) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has gained momentum since the onset of Arab uprisings of 2011, and particularly upon the developments in Libya, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. While the literature on proxy war mainly views these actors as a foreign policy tool of regional and global powers, this thesis offers a broader perspective based on the Social Movements Theory (SMT) focusing on the side of armed groups. Using the Iraqi Sadrist Movement’s relations with Iran from 2003 to 2018 as a case study, it argues that the social basis of the movement, the Shia underclass who were most severely affected by the Iranian intervention in Iraq and adopted an Iraqi nationalist ideology has primarily shaped the said relationship. Due to their social basis resentful against Iran, Sadrists had to maintain their independence from the Tehran regime even at times of short-lived rapprochements. This study contributes to the literature on armed groups by exploring the role of the social basis as well as to the SMT by analyzing a movement with an armed group and demonstrating the role of leadership. Finally, the thesis shows that sectarian identity does not necessarily build alliances or cause conflicts in the MENA region by observing that there are intra-sectarian rivalries as well as inter-communal alliances.Abstract iv Öz v Acknowledgments vi Table of Contents vii CHAPTERS 1.
