Does high hydrophilic complexing agent concentration enhance separation factors in “push-pull” extraction systems?
General equations describing the separation factors applicable to “push–pull” extraction systems using neutral and acidic organophosphorus extractants were derived. Factors affecting the separation factors, such as complexation constants, extraction equilibrium constants, counter anion concentration, extractant content, and hydrophilic complexing agent concentration, were elucidated. Specifically, for the extraction systems where the two target metal ions share the identical stoichiometry with the hydrophilic complexing agents, the separation factors continuously increase with higher concentration of hydrophilic complexing agent. In contrast, when their stoichiometries differ, the separation factor reaches extreme values depending on the hydrophilic complexing agent concentration. Additionally, carefully designed “push–pull” extraction systems were experimentally tested, to verify the predicted extremum behavior of the separation factor. This study offers new insights into optimizing separation efficiency while minimizing the costs associated with hydrophilic complexing agents, providing practical implications for industrial extraction processes
Polygenic Risk Score and Lung Adenocarcinoma Risk Among Never-Smokers by EGFR Mutation Status: A Brief Report
We assessed the association between a genome-wide polygenic risk score (PRS) developed for lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) risk and mutation on the EGFR gene in 998 East Asian never-smoking female LUAD cases (518 EGFR-positive; 480 EGFR-negative) and 4544 never-smoking controls using case-case and multinomial regression analyses. We found that the PRS was more strongly associated with EGFR-positive LUAD compared with EGFR-negative LUAD, where the association between the fourth quartile of the PRS and EGFR-positive LUAD (odds ratio = 8.63, 95% confidence interval: 5.67-13.14) was significantly higher than the association between the fourth quartile of the PRS with EGFR-negative LUAD (odds ratio = 3.50, 95% confidence interval: 2.44-5.00) (p-heterogeneity = 3.66 × 10-3). Our findings suggest that germline genetic susceptibility may be differentially associated with LUAD in never-smoking female East Asian patients depending on the cancer's mutation status, which may have important public health and clinical implications

Pollution and Business: Case Studies From Modern Chinese Business History
This chapter looks at the connection between business history and climate change, with a particular focus on pollution and the case of China. It aims to encourage business historians of China to probe the environmental side of Chinese business history, including the connection between business and pollution. This chapter starts with a discussion of previous historical scholarship on pollution in business history. It then turns to several examples of works by China historians not working in the field of Chinese business history that nevertheless touch upon the relationship between business and the environment and can be useful to historians of Chinese business in terms of considering future avenues for research that take into account the environment. The chapter then moves to early twentieth-century Shanghai. It first discusses how the Shanghai Municipal Council in the International Settlement reacted to the problem of air pollution. Thereafter, the chapter zooms in on two businesses: the Shanghai Power Company and the China General Omnibus Company, both of which were sources of air pollution in early twentieth-century Shanghai.</p

Splenectomy Improves Outcome of Intracerebral Hemorrhage
ABSTRACTThe acute splenic response triggers a surge of immune cells and pro-inflammatory mediators, exacerbating secondary brain injury and worsening the outcome after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Splenectomy confers benefits in experimental ischaemic stroke, but its effects on ICH are not known. We conducted a proof-of-concept study to test the hypothesis that a prior splenectomy would improve behavioral outcomes after ICH. Adult C57BL/6N mice with collagenase-induced ICH that had undergone splenectomy two weeks prior were compared with those with intact spleens. Motor function, haematoma size, cerebral oedema, intracerebral and peripheral blood neutrophil counts were evaluated. Splenectomised mice had lower neutrophil counts in peripheral blood and peri-haematoma regions of the brain. They performed better on the modified Neurological Severity Score during the first week post-ICH and for a shorter duration on rotarod and cylinder tests. Haematomas in non-splenectomised animals showed expansion after the initial hemorrhage and were larger than in splenectomised animals, with more severe surrounding oedema and greater mass effect. This is the first report on the beneficial effects of splenectomy in experimental ICH. Further studies on the optimal timing and mode of splenic response ablation are justified to assess its translational potential.Graphical AbstractIn this in vivo study, mice were divided into splenectomy and laparotomy groups (control), and ICH was induced 2 weeks after. It is demonstrated that ICH products such as blood trigger an acute splenic response, leading to immune cell infiltration into the peri-hematomal region, which in turn causes neuroinflammation and damage to blood-brain barrier. This subsequently results in hematoma expansion and cerebral edema seen in brain sections and MRI, respectively, forming a vicious cycle of brain-spleen interaction.</p
Harsh voice and its interaction with vowel quality in Fuzhou Min Chinese
Fuzhou Chinese (Fuzhounese), a variety of Eastern Min, is known for its tone-vowel interaction. The tones /21, 241, 24/ are associated with lower, diphthongal vowels and non-modal phonation, while tones /44, 51, 32, 5/ are associated with higher, monophthongal vowels and modal phonation. This study tests the hypothesis, based on the laryngeal articulator model (Esling et al., 2019), that epilaryngeal constriction responsible for non-modal phonation mediates vowel quality alternation due to articulatory synergy with lingual retraction. The most common phonation type observed among 18 speakers is harsh voice (with occasional aryepiglottic trilling). Creaky and modal voice, and less often ventricular or whispery voice, are also observed. Spectral tilt and noise measures reveal that noise (cepstral peak prominence and harmonic-to-noise ratio) is most reliable in distinguishing modal from non-modal tones. The only spectral tilt measure that does so is H2-H4, while H1-H2 differentiates subtypes of constricted phonation. The relationship between phonation and vowel quality is also examined. Noisier phonation is associated with higher F1 for all vowels, lower F2 for [ei], and higher F2 for [ou], in accordance with cross-dialectal variation (Chen, 1998), supporting the hypothesis that tone-vowel interaction is mediated by epilaryngeally constricted phonation.published_or_final_versio
