A Study of the Leaf Phenology and Thermonastic Leaf Movement of Daphniphyllum macropodum

    No full text
In this study, leaf phenology (the seasonal growth pattern of leaves) was investigated for 1 year to investigate the life–cycle strategies of Daphniphyllum macropodum. In addition, the degree of drooping and rolling of the leaves was measured at freezing temperatures in the winter, and the leaf moisture and leaf thickness were examined to determine the changes within the leaves. In April, young leaves unfolded in a flush, while the leaves that had emerged the previous year began to fall. The leaf longevity of D. macropodum was 12–17 months, and in spring, leaf unfolding and defoliation occurred almost simultaneously, avoiding self–shading. The leaves of D. macropodum are thick and wide; thus, old leaves block the light from young leaves, reducing their photosynthesis rate. Therefore, it is assumed that there is no need to keep old leaves on the branch for a long time. The phenomena of drooping and rolling were easily observed in the leaves of D. macropodum at –6.9°C, which disappeared at –3.6°C. There was no change in the moisture content of the leaves with the changes in the freezing temperature (below 0°C), but the leaf thickness decreased with the decreasing freezing temperature. This phenomenon is called thermonastic leaf movement, which may be a reaction to the freezing temperature in order to prevent excessive moisture loss in winter. It appears that at the freezing temperature, the water inside the cells migrates out of the cell and gathers together, resulting in a change in the leaf thickness

Physiological Study of the Wild Edible Mushroom Leucocalocybe mongolica

    No full text
Leucocalocybe mongolica (S. Imai) X.D. Yu & Y.J. Yao, a well–known edible and medicinal mushroom is endangered as its habitat is continually under threat from human activities, which has been lessening year after year. In this paper, the biological characteristics of the fungus of strain isolated from the wild fruit body were studied. For the screening of single optimal factor, carbon sources, nitrogen sources, inorganic salt and growth factor were tested for the mycelia growth rate. As a result, the fungus grew better on maltose, starch and cellobiose as the carbon sources; yeast extract, beef powder, beef extract as the nitrogen sources; K_2HPO_4, Fe_2(SO_4)_3 as the inorganic salt; some decoctions such as of Pleurotus ostreatus, carrot, soybean sprouts as the growth factor. The orthogonal experiments with the above selected three conditions for each of the four factors were then performed and the optimal cultivation conditions were determined. A descending order of the impact for the four factors was growth factor > inorganic salt > nitrogen source > carbon source and the F–test showed very significant difference among all the four factors. The optimal culture condition for L. mongolica was the combination of starch and beef extract, decoction of 2% carrot, no added inorganic salt. Based on this conclusion of the orthogonal experiment, the optimal medium in mycelium cultures was applied to temperature and pH experiments, anointed with pH=6.5 and at 25°C were suggested that good growth of mushrooms

Morphological and Phylogenetic Characterization of Tyrophagus putrescentiae Schrank (Sarcoptiformes : Acaridae) from Hypsizygus marmoreus in Korea

    No full text
The present study reports the morphological and phylogenetic characteristics of Tyrophagus putrescentiae from Hypsizygus marmoreus in Korea. This species is morphologically characterized by two pigmented eyespots on the prodorsal shield, concave posterior margin of coxal plate II, prominently and apically enlarged supracoxal seta shaft at bases of pectinations, and solenidion omega1 on tarsi I and II, respectively and length of setae d1 compared to setae c1 and setae d2. The internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) in the ribosomal DNA (rDNA), which is reliable for species identification, and the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) in the mitochondrial DNA, which is a highly conserved region in eukaryotes, were sequenced. The resulting phylogenetic trees for COI and ITS2 apparently showed that the tested samples in this study were clustered with T. putrescentiae and separated from other species in the genus. This research would be useful for controlling mites from H. marmoreus in Korea and could help improve the quality and quantity of H. marmoreus production

Institutional Review Board of the Faculty Arts and Science : Current activity report and future perspective

    No full text
Nearly four years have passed since the Institutional Review Board (IRB) was established in the Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS) of Kyushu University. In this article, trend of current ethic examinations was reported and future perspective of IRB was reviewed. Mission of IRB is to protect human body, rights and privacy. The task of IRB in FAS is getting enlarged due to an increase of the number of applications and queries to the IRB. Queries include the necessity, the process, and the method of application to the IRB. IRB committee performs ethic examinations based on 1) the Declaration of Helsinki, 2) the Ethical Guidelines for Medical and Health Research Involving Human Subjects and 3) the Act on the Protection of Personal Information Held by Independent Administrative Agencies. The Act on the Protection Personal Information consists mainly of 1) scope of gathered information, 2) purpose of use, 3) limitation of usage and distribution, and 4) security measures. The FAS is characterized by numerous questionnaires conducted by teachers in their classrooms. According to the social globalization, individual information gathered by the FAS should be managed appropriately to prevent any leakage, damage and destruction

Development of a Parallel Hybrid System for Agricultural Tractors

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to develop parallel hybrid tractor. The hybrid tractor was constructed by adding major components of a hybrid driving system on a tractor. The tractor has 71 kW engine power and the major components included an EMG (electric motor/generator), an inverter, batteries, a battery management system (BMS), and a hybrid control unit (HCU). The hybrid tractor had three control modes: idle, power assist, and battery charge and it were determined by the workload which estimated by measuring engine rotational speed. Performance of the hybrid tractor was evaluated through the field tests of plowing. Performance tests were conducted by comparing the hybrid tractor and the conventional one, and one hybrid tractor was used for the experiment. The hybrid tractor used the hybrid system for the control of EMG, and the conventional tractor was driven by the engine not using the hybrid system. Performances of the hybrid tractor and the conventional tractor were similar at M2 which is low speed condition and it could work with low load, but the performance of the hybrid tractor was better than one of the conventional tractor at higher load condition (M3, M4). Fuel efficiency of the hybrid tractor at M2 was similar with the one of the conventional tractor, but it was lower at M3 and M4 than the one of the conventional tractor by 74%. Considering all results of this study, the developed parallel hybrid tractor is feasible to improve plowing performance of the conventional tractor

The epidemiology of sleep behavior, physical activity, and depression : A review of the literature

    No full text
The aim of this study is to review the literature on the epidemiological studies of sleep behavior, physical activity and depression. Based on the reviewed literature, depression has been linked to sleep-related factors ; sleep disturbances, sleep quality, sleep quantity and sleep timing. Similar to western findings, numerous epidemiological studies conducted in Japan have identified sleep disturbances as a significant risk factor for the later development of depression. However, the epidemiology studies on the relation between sleep timing, sleep quality and depressive symptoms are few and mostly cross-sectional designed. Therefore, this study is warranty and timely. Furthermore, the combination of sleep and physical activity in relation to depression remains unclear
