The Position of Consumer Cooperatives as a Rice Retail Format in Japan : An Analysis of the Fukuoka Prefectural Consumer Cooperative Members’ Rice–purchasing Needs and Behaviors
To expand rice consumption in Japan, consumer cooperatives (hereinafter referred to as “co–ops”) are an expected retail format. The aim of a co–op is to contribute to the creation of a consumer–oriented social system centered on ensuring food safety, which has become increasingly concerning among Japanese consumers. The purpose of this study was to develop recommendations for the formulation of more effective marketing strategies and to encourage the use of co–ops when purchasing rice among existing members. First, co–op members’ diversified rice–purchasing needs are identified in order to investigate the relative position of co–ops among the numerous current retail formats for rice over a 10–year period. Data on rice purchases based on the psychographic criteria of co–op members were collected twice through mail questionnaire surveys: once in 2006 and once in 2015. The following six rice purchasing needs were identified using exploratory factor analysis: “Official information”, “Trustworthiness”, “Promotional information”, “Low price”, “Rinse–free”, and “Rice milling date”. Hierarchical cluster analysis based on these six needs identified the following five types of members: “Promotional information seekers”, “Trustworthiness seekers”, “Low price seekers”, “Members with low involvement in rice purchases”, and “Non–price elements seekers”. Accordingly, the results suggested that as a rice retail format, co–ops satisfy all six rice–purchasing needs except for “Low price”. Among the members, “Promotional information seekers” and “Non–price elements seekers” show the strongest loyalty to co–ops when purchasing rice. “Trustworthiness seekers” were recognized as a new segment that hopes to be much more loyal to co–ops in the future. In addition, significant changes in the manifestations of members’ rice needs occurred over a 10–year period; these needs should be analyzed to identify suggestions for the formulation of future rice retail strategies for co–ops
Forest dynamics during 8 years at the three monitoring plots for long-term forest dynamics in the Shiiba Research Forest.
Three 1 ha monitoring plots, which had named as Kasebaru, Maruju and Hirono, were established at different locations in Shiiba Research Forest. At these plots, the forest dynamics have been monitored under the plan lasting more than 100 years. During 8 years from the starting monitoring, stem densities decreased, and total basal area and total biomass stock increased at the all three plots. Average annual increments of total biomass were 3.3, 3.9 and 7.1 Mg/ha/yr, with the mean of 4.8 Mg/ha/yr, at Kasebaru, Maruju and Hirono, respectively. The decline in stem density was mainly due to mortality of the individuals which have less than 20 cm in stem diameter. The number of recruitment individuals with >15cm in girth at breast height was less than that of dead individuals with >15cm in girth at breast height at the all plots. During the 8 years, species composition and diversity index were not changed at the all plots. The long-lasting decline of small trees may result in the decline of forest biomass and productivity

The Composition of Decomposition : The Kusōzu Images of Matsui Fuyuko and Itō Seiu, and Buddhism in Erotic Grotesque Modernity
1.Introduction 2.Scriptural origins of Kusōzu genre and Japanese Kusōzu 3.Gender, Image Function, and Ways of Seeing 4.Kusōzu in Twentieth-century Japanese Visual Culture, and in Itō Seiu\u27s Work 5.The Nude, the Classical and the Grotesque 6.Kusōzu and the Erotic-Grotesque 7.Matsui\u27s Kusōzu Series 8.ConclusionIn Japanese culture, the corpse in nine phases of disintegration is presented in certain visual and textual contexts as a locus for Buddhist contemplation. In pictorial representations this is called kusōzu. This essay questions conventional interpretations of contemporary artist Matsui Fuyuko’s paintings and sketches of kusōzu and related imagery as reworkings of premodern Buddhist depictions. It proposes an alternative cultural genealogy for her work and demonstrates that Matsui’s influences are more readily situated in depictions of anatomical dissection, the nude, and notions and images of self-mutilation or suicide. Of pivotal significance is the art of Itō Seiu, who casts Buddhist motifs in the aesthetic of eroguro (“erotic grotesque”). Presentations of aestheticized dismemberment and the gaze(s) galvanized by them are part of both kusōzu and eroguro imagery. The grotesque was an inherent element of modernity in Japanese visual culture
