    Supplementary Effect of Hydrogen Peroxide as a Pre–disinfectant for Sterilizing Rhizome Bud Explants of Zantedeschia aethiopica L. with Chlorine Dioxide

    Zantedeschia spp. (calla lily) are ornamental tuberous/rhizomatous plants of economic importance worldwide. In vitro micropropagation techniques have been widely used to mass–produce virus–free calla lilies. However, effective removal of contaminants is a major problem for the in vitro establishment of the calla lily propagation. In this study, we applied hydrogen peroxide (H_2O_2) as a pre–disinfectant for sterilizing rhizome bud explants of Z. aethiopica followed by sterilization with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) or chlorine dioxide (ClO_2) to eliminate in vitro contamination. Results showed that application of 5% (w/v) H_2O_2 for 5 minutes followed by 1% (w/v) NaOCl or 60~180 mg·L–1 ClO2 for 15 minutes significantly reduced the contamination rate to < 38% while maintaining the vigor of explant tissues. Surviving explants sterilized with H2O2 followed by ClO2 exhibited a higher rate (>75%) of those showing shoot development than those sterilized with NaOCl (54%). The two–step sterilization method with H_2O_2 and ClO_2 synergistically optimized the disinfection efficiency and explants viability

    For the purpose of detecting misconception in Newtonian mechanics that students majoring in humanities and social science have, we gave Force Concept Inventory (FCI) test to those who attended the classes of \u22Physics in Daily Life\u22 in KIKAN Education. We find that they have very low scores for several questions, most of which are closely related to impetus misconception. Principal component analysis of the students\u27 answers reveals that these questions have large components of the eigenvector corresponding to the largest eigenvalue of the correlation coefficient matrix. Effects of introducing \u22Basic Physics\u22 into the high school curriculum are briefly discussed

    Richards Function in Animal Growth Analysis and Friedmann Equation in Space Expansion Analysis

    This study was designed to investigate the analytical concept common to animal growth analysis and space expansion analysis. In addition, the space expansion was investigated using the equivalence principle. Three differential equations for animal growth analysis were obtained from Richards function. Three differential equations for space expansion analysis were Friedmann equations and deceleration parameter. The results obtained were as follows. (I) Three differential equations in both analyses were characterized as follows; (a) the square of the relative growth (or expansion) rate, (b) the relative growth (or expansion) acceleration rate, (c) the equation given by (b)/(a). The analytical concept of differential equation was the same between animal growth analysis and space expansion analysis. This commonness might be ascribed to the mathematical characteristics of the differentiation of exponential function, though the analytical complexity was different between animal growth analysis and space expansion analysis. (II) The increase in the cosmic scale factor in the flat FLRW space–time was related to the decrease in the recession velocity of the illuminant in the Minkowski space–time, an accumulation of equivalence principle suggesting a relationship between the cosmic scale factor and the Lorentz factor. The real expansion of the flat FLRW space–time might be interpreted using the Bondi K–factor elongation of the Minkowski space–time that did not contain the gravity

    A study on the development of the Club Adaptation Scale for athlete and non-athlete university students

    The purpose of this study was to develop the Club Adaptation Scale in University Students (CASUS) who participated in extracurricular activities. Participants were 1,047 (969 male, 277 female ; 18.63±1.00 year), comprising 650 athletes and 397 non-athletes, who completed a questionnaire including measures of CASUS, current adjustment and value of clubs in school life. Exploratory factor analysis revealed that CASUS was constructed of 3 factors : commitment, maladjustment, and satisfaction of club/membership. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated goodness of fit indices for 3 factor structures of CASUS in the athletic club and non-athletic club. All subscales of the CASUS showed sufficient reliability and concurrent validity in both clubs. The results of a t-test indicated a significant mean difference between the athletic club and non-athletic club for CASUS, but effect sizes of d were very small. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationships among CASUS, active frequency and active time. The results showed that active frequency and active time were positively related to commitment and satisfaction of club/membership in the athletic club. In the non-athletic club, active frequency and active time were positively related to commitment, and active time was positively related to satisfaction of club/ membership

    Drainage Improvement Project : Cost and Benefit Analysis in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam

    The study used the approach of cost – benefit analysis (CBA) to assess the economic feasibility of the drainage improvement project in Chien Luoc hamlet, Can Tho City. The study has conducted face–to–face interviews of 60 households in the hamlet to estimate the economic loss of households due to flooding. Economic protection of loss is considered as the benefit of this project. The study showed that the annual economic loss of a household was around 12.35 million VND and total cost of the drainage improvement project was estimated about 153,819 USD, equivalent to 3.23 billion VND. CBA results showed that the net present value (NPV) of the project was estimated about 25.869 billion VND, 107% for the internal return rate (IRR) and 9.7 times for the benefit–cost ratio (CBR) at the discount rate of 10%. Therefore, the drainage improvement project in Chien Luoc hamlet was economically feasible and socially beneficial
