Definition of Data Sharing Agreements (The case of Spanish Data Protection Law)

    Get PDF
Electronic sharing of data among different parties, includ- ing groups of organizations and/or individuals, while protecting their legitimate rights on these data, is a key both for business and societal transactions. However, data sharing clauses are usually specified in legal documents that are far from being amenable of automated processing by the electronic platform that should enforce them. Furthermore, different parties usually pursue different interests. This may lead to conflicts that need to be solved for the agreements to succeed. Addressing this prob- lem, in this paper we i) discuss a proposal for the definition of a machine processable electronic data sharing multilateral contract (e-DSA); ii) re- call a controlled natural language (CNL4DSA) developed for expressing e-DSA clauses, in particular, authorizations and obligations policies on data; iii) instantiate a resolution process that can solve potential con- flicts posed by different stakeholders? clauses, e.g., legal, organizational, and end-users? clauses, according to specific criteria. We illustrate our approach on a realistic e-Health scenario derived from one described by a Spanish medical institution. The main novelty of this paper are the ref- erence to the Spanish Data Protection Law (S)DPL as the basic source of policies regulating data exchange and the idea of a multi-step e-DSA definition phase that incrementally increases the contract granularity. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first attempts to investi- gate how a real DPL can be translated into privacy rules electronically manageable by a devoted e-DSA-based infrastructure.?

Inter-annual climate variability and zooplankton: applying teleconnection indices to two deep subalpine lakes in Italy

Investigating relation between meteo-climatic indices and between-year variation in Daphnia population density and phenology is crucial for e.g. predicting impact of climate change on lake ecosystem structure and functioning. We tested whether and how two teleconnection indices calculated for the winter period, namely the East Atlantic pattern (EADJF) and the Eastern Mediterranean Pattern (EMPDJF) were correlated with Daphnia population growth in two Italian subalpine lakes, Garda and Maggiore. We investigated between-lake temporal coherence in: i) water temperature within the water layer in which Daphnia is distributed; ii) timing of Daphnia initial and spring maximum population density peak and iii) the level of Daphnia spring maximum population density peak over an eleven-year period (1998-2008) of unchanged predation pressure by fish and invertebrates, and of common oligotrophy. Between-lake temporal coherence was high for an earlier start, an earlier, and lower, Daphnia population spring density peak after milder winters. Peak density level was coherently, positively correlated with soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentration. We hypothesized that Daphnia peak densities were related to atmospheric modes of variability in winter and to the degree of late winter mixing promoting replenishment of algal nutrients into upper water layers and phytoplankton growth, enhancing food availability and Daphnia fecundity, promoting Daphnia peak

A Terminological Survey on the Titles of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7)

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on the automatic extraction of domain-specific knowledge from the European Commission projects of the 7th Framework Programme, hereinafter referred as FP7. The study is divided in three parts: the first part introduces the work starting from the building up of a corpus containing the titles of European Projects of the whole FP7 in order to obtain a relevant terminological sample for the different domains; the second describes software and methods while the third part focuses on the evaluation of results. Finally, we conclude by suggesting possible directions for further development of a comparison between terminological extraction from FP7 and FP5/FP6

A GENERALISED FULLY UNSTEADY HYBRID RANS/BEM MODEL FOR MARINE PROPELLER FLOW SIMULATIONS

    No full text
A generalised hybrid RANSE/BEM model for the analysis of hull/propeller interaction in ship hydrodynamics problems at reduced computational cost is presented. Akin to standard hybrid RANSE/BEM models, the coupling between viscous and inviscid-flow solvers is based on a volume-force/effective-inflow approach. The generalization consists in coupling a time-accurate solution by BEM of the unsteady flow around the rotating propeller with the solution of the surrounding viscous-flow by unsteady RANSE to account for transient-flow propeller perturbation. The methodology is validated through numerical applications to a simple case study describing a propeller in uniform flow conditions. Numerical results by the proposed hybrid RANSE/BEM model are compared with results by full-RANSE simulations and the capability of the methodology to correctly describe transient propeller flow perturbation to a surrounding viscous flow is investigated

The role of social networks and citizen science in environmental research: the unexpected revival of freshwater mussels in Lake Orta

    Get PDF
Social networks are increasingly used for many conservation and environmental educational purposes. The usefulness for ecological studies is exemplified by the casual discovery of the recovery of freshwater mussels in Lake Orta. Mussels were extirpated by severe industrial pollution soon after 1926 and over the following decades their recovery was prevented by acidification and increase of metal concentrations. Even after the improvement of water conditions obtained by limning, the lack of mussels was taken for granted based on the legacy effects of accumulated toxins in the sediments, and on the limited potential for most extirpated species of mussels to naturally recolonize. The probability of mussel\u27s recovery in Lake Orta was considered poor also for the apparent lack of access to restocking populations, which is essential to start the natural recolonization of an area. Because of the assumption that mussels were absent and of the difficulties of locating mussels their recolonization went unnoticed for about 15 years. Only in 2014 the casual discovery of mussels in Lake Orta was made possible thanks to an amateur video posted on YouTube and delivered to one of us through Facebook: this highlights once more the potential role of social networks for conservation and environmental issues. Freshwater mussels are challenging to locate because they are often rare, spatially clustered, and difficult to detect. The recolonization of Lake Orta went unnoticed probably due to the limited extent of the colonized area, low density and, at least initially, the small size of individuals. In such cases the contribution of citizen science can be crucial to provide the reporting even of small populations present in restricted areas and/or not easily accessible. An extensive search along the lake perimeter is being performed through the volunteer collaboration of local SCUBA divers and an online survey through social networks
