    Business Process Oriented Learning: A Collaborative Approach of Organisational Learning

    Process Oriented Training and Learning can be applied in two different approaches: (a) processes describing the methodology of training and learning as well as (b) processes describing the organizational context that need to be learned. This paper intrudes the results of the EU project Learn PAd that developed prototypes of modelling tools enabling business processes for learning and training. Flexibility of business processes have been introduced with case management and knowledge artefacts of PROMOTE had been integrated to provide a complete modelling environment fulfilling the identified 101 requirements for the modelling language. The local deployment and the Web-based deployment of the developed prototypes are introduced and the development space that enables collaborative participation of the development and improvement of the prototypes on ADOxx.org is introduced

    Domain-specific queries and Web search personalization: some investigations

    Major search engines deploy personalized Web results to enhance users\u27 experience, by showing them data supposed to be relevant to their interests. Even if this process may bring benefits to users while browsing, it also raises concerns on the selection of the search results. In particular, users may be unknowingly trapped by search engines in protective information bubbles, called "filter bubbles", which can have the undesired effect of separating users from information that does not fit their preferences. This paper moves from early results on quantification of personalization over Google search query results. Inspired by previous works, we have carried out some experiments consisting of search queries performed by a battery of Google accounts with differently prepared profiles. Matching query results, we quantify the level of personalization, according to topics of the queries and the profile of the accounts. This work reports initial results and it is a first step a for more extensive investigation to measure Web search personalization

    Analysis of MAC-level throughput in LTE systems with link rate adaptation and HARQ protocols

    LTE is rapidly gaining momentum for building future 4G cellular systems, and real operational networks are under deployment worldwide. To achieve high throughput performance, in addition to an advanced physical layer design LTE exploits a combination of sophisticated mechanisms at the radio resource management layer. Clearly, this makes difficult to develop analytical tools to accurately assess and optimise the user perceived throughput under realistic channel assumptions. Thus, most existing studies focus only on link-layer throughput or consider individual mechanisms in isolation. The main contribution of this paper is a unified modelling framework of the MAC-level downlink throughput of a sigle LTE cell, which caters for wideband CQI feedback schemes, AMC and HARQ protocols as defined in the LTE standard. We have validated the accuracy of the proposed model through detailed LTE simulations carried out with the ns-3 simulator extended with the LENA module for LTE

    Privacy-Preserving Energy-Reading for Smart Meter

    Smart Meters belong to the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and allow customers to monitor locally and remotely the current usage of energy. Providers query Smart Meters for billing purpose or to establish the amount of energy needed by houses. However, reading details sent from smart meters to the energy provider can be used to violate customers? privacy. In this paper, our contribution is two-fold: first, we present an architecture to turn traditional energy meters into Smart Meters, and then we illustrate a privacy-preserving solution, which uses Secure Two-party Computation, to preserve customers? privacy during energy-readings. In particular, we deployed a Smart Meter built upon an existing energy meter available in Italy. Then, we collected and analysed an energy trace of two months, and we tag customers hourly/daily/monthly habits by observing their consumes. Finally, we provide the feasibility of our solution to protect customers? privacy

    MicroRNA 19a replacement partially rescues fin and cardiac defects in zebrafish model of Holt Oram syndrome

    Holt-Oram Syndrome (HOS) is an autosomal dominant heart-hand syndrome caused by mutations in the TBX5 gene, a transcription factor capable of regulating hundreds of cardiac-specific genes through complex transcriptional networks. Here we show that, in zebrafish, modulation of a single miRNA is sufficient to rescue the morphogenetic defects generated by HOS. The analysis of miRNA-seq profiling revealed a decreased expression of miR-19a in Tbx5-depleted zebrafish embryos compared to the wild type. We revealed that the transcription of the miR-17-92 cluster, which harbors miR-19a, is induced by Tbx5 and that a defined dosage of miR-19a is essential for the correct development of the heart. Importantly, we highlighted that miR-19a replacement is able to rescue cardiac and pectoral fin defects and to increase the viability of HOS zebrafish embryos. We further observed that miR-19a replacement shifts the global gene expression profile of HOS-like zebrafish embryos towards the wild type condition, confirming the ability of miR-19a to rescue the Tbx5 phenotype. In conclusion our data demonstrate the importance of Tbx5/miR-19a regulatory circuit in heart development and provide a proof of principle that morphogenetic defects associated with HOS can be rescued by transient miRNA modulation

    Lexical parsability and morphological structure

    A classical tenet in the psycholinguistic literature on the mental lexicon is that a parsed affix presents high activation levels (and thus contributes to activation spreading to other words with the same affix), and that such levels are tightly correlated with the affix productivity. In a number of influential papers, it has been suggested that parsability criteria interact with frequency to define morphological productivity in the lexicon. For example, the frequency of a derivative (e.g. government) relative to its base (govern) is shown to be a good predictor for parsability/productivity. The higher the frequency ratio, the more likely the morphological structure to be perceived, and the associated affix to be used productively. The present contribution intends to offer a computational explanatory basis for this correlational evidence, and assess its applicability to the acquisition of complex inflectional paradigms. In those languages, like Italian and German, whose inflection is stem-based rather than word-based, there is often no single paradigmatic form which can act as a base by being properly contained in all other inflected variants. Yet, it seems intuitive to suggest that verbs that are inflected for one paradigm cell only (e.g. neighbouring), are learned earlier and more easily but exhibit lower levels of perceived inflectional structure than verbs with richer paradigms. This appears to be in good accord with experimental evidence of time latencies in lexical decision, which are shown to correlate negatively with token frequency, paradigm size and paradigm entropy. Our simulations, based on Temporal Self-Organizing Maps (TSOMs) allow us to establish an interesting connection between inflectional parsability, frequency-based paradigm structure, and acquisitional constraints on the interaction between the human processor and working memory. Self-organising topological models of the mental lexicon can mimic the spatial and temporal organization of memory structures supporting the processing of symbolic sequences, and can provide an interesting framework for testing integrative accounts of lexical processing/acquisition as the complex result of general-purpose operations on word stimuli (e.g. working memory, long-term storage, sensory-motor mapping, rehearsal, unit integration, unit analysis, executive control, time-series processing), in line with recent acquisitions on the neuro-functional architecture of the perisylvian language network in the left hemisphere of human brain. Simulations of the incremental acquisition of "mini-paradigms" (small islands of morphological contrast encompassing up to three different forms for the same verb support the hypothesis that perception of structure (parsability) and morphological productivity strongly correlate in the inflectional lexica of German and Italian. In particular, by monitoring longitudinal progress in storage and generalisation of differently distributed inflectional paradigms in the two languages, we show that: i) high-frequency forms are stored and accessed significantly earlier than low-frequency forms; ii) deeply entrenched but paradigmatically isolated forms tend to block usage of other forms in the same paradigm; iii) low-frequency evenly distributed (highly entropic) intra-paradigmatic forms are acquired later but are easily extended. Our investigation credits the proposed computational framework with psycholinguistic plausibility, and grounds parsability-based models of morphological productivity on a specific, explicit proposal of lexical architecture. This provides an explanatory basis for both psycholinguistic and linguistic accounts of morphological structure, and offers an intermediate framework for scientific inquiry bridging the gap between linguistic units and functional units in neurosciences. Finally, it makes the interesting suggestion that principles of morpheme-based organisation of the mental lexicon are compatible with a learning strategy requiring memorisation of full forms

    Does Presentation Format Influence Visual Size Discrimination in Tufted Capuchin Monkeys (Sapajus spp.)?

    Most experimental paradigms to study visual cognition in humans and non-human species are based on discrimination tasks involving the choice between two or more visual stimuli. To this end, different types of stimuli and procedures for stimuli presentation are used, which highlights the necessity to compare data obtained with different methods. The present study assessed whether, and to what extent, capuchin monkeys\u27 ability to solve a size discrimination problem is influenced by the type of procedure used to present the problem. Capuchins\u27 ability to generalise knowledge across different tasks was also evaluated. We trained eight adult tufted capuchin monkeys to select the larger of two stimuli of the same shape and different sizes by using pairs of food items (Experiment 1), computer images (Experiment 1) and objects (Experiment 2). Our results indicated that monkeys achieved the learning criterion faster with food stimuli compared to both images and objects. They also required consistently fewer trials with objects than with images. Moreover, female capuchins had higher levels of acquisition accuracy with food stimuli than with images. Finally, capuchins did not immediately transfer the solution of the problem acquired in one task condition to the other conditions. Overall, these findings suggest that - even in relatively simple visual discrimination problems where a single perceptual dimension (i.e., size) has to be judged - learning speed strongly depends on the mode of presentation
