World Register of marine Cave Species (WoRCS): a new thematic species database for marine and anchialine cave biodiversity
Scientific exploration of marine cave environments and anchialine ecosystems over recent decades has led to outstanding discoveries of novel taxa, increasing our knowledge of biodiversity. However, biological research on underwater caves has taken place only in a few areas of the world and relevant information remains fragmented in isolated publications and databases. This fragmentation makes assessing the conservation status of marine cave species especially problematic, and this issue should be addressed urgently given the stresses resulting from planned and rampant development in the coastal zone worldwide. The goal of the World Register of marine Cave Species (WoRCS) initiative is to create a comprehensive taxonomic and ecological database of known species from marine caves and anchialine systems worldwide and to present this as a Thematic Species Database (TSD) of the World Register of marine Species (WoRMS). WoRCS will incorporate ecological data (e.g., type of environment, salinity regimes, and cave zone) as well as geographical information on the distribution of species in cave and anchialine environments. Biodiversity data will be progressively assembled from individual database sources at regional, national or local levels, as well as from literature sources (estimate: >20,000 existing records of cave-dwelling species scattered in several databases). Information will be organized in the WoRCS database following a standard glossary based on existing terminology. Cave-related information will be managed by the WoRCS thematic editors with all data dynamically linked to WoRMS and its team of taxonomic editors. In order to mobilize data into global biogeographic databases, a Gazetteer of the Marine and Anchialine Caves of the World will be established. The presence records of species could be eventually georeferenced for submission to the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) and constitute an important dataset for biogeographical and climate change studies on marine caves and anchialine systems
Built environment and its parts: towards an integrated study of the construction as a system using an evolving technological knowledge
To consider the built environment as a single system is in contrast with the tendency towards specialization and analysis. Multiple changes are now taking place simultaneously in the planning process, the construction techniques, the organization of a building site, the production of materials and the technical information. All this is driven by a progressive specialization of knowledge and an increasingly important role of data and tools coming from different scientific apparatus. The richness of building methods is always evolving to meet very different requirements in extremely varied conditions and environments. This, however, makes the understanding of the construction and the environment as a \u27system\u27 difficult and, consequently, all of the various elements that must contribute to forming the system. All this is in a scenario dominated by "Big Data" and computerized processing of information that seem to make natural language completely inappropriate to the task. In this situation and in our role as professors involved in the training of future professionals, we are committed to defining a method for dealing with the processing of information relating to construction within a system that permits operating at the level of analytical details without losing the connection to the system in general. The study presented here is based on the use of cognitive maps to represent the parts as a general whole of the construction as a system, through a coded breakdown of sentences that convey information. Considering the need to maintain all the usual forms that architects use in their design work, as well as relying on known and familiar examples of constructions, we link basic elementary concepts to the most widespread architectural journalism. Essentially, examples of solutions which refer to parts of the construction system empower designers to grasp the essential function of the parts to reach a complete and organic understanding of them in relation to the system itself. Starting from the five main themes that compose the construction system (ground anchoring, structure, enclosure, roofing and systems), we synthesized in a few booklets the basic information necessary for an architect to understand the construction and its parts as a \u27system\u27

I Controlli Periodici del Sistema Sincrono di Gestione dei Nomi a Dominio del Registro Italiano
Un sistema sincrono per la gestione dei nomi a dominio ha come sua caratteristica peculiare quella di mettere a disposizione degli operatori che si occupano della registrazione e manutenzione dei nomi a dominio, detti Registrar, per conto degli assegnatari, detti Registrant, un\u27applicazione in grado di elaborare in tempo reale le operazioni richieste riguardanti gli oggetti coinvolti (nomi a dominio, contatti, name server). Anche il Registro Italiano dei nomi a dominio nella sua transizione dalla gestione asincrona, fondata essenzialmente sulla elaborazione manuale di fax con fatturazione posticipata delle operazioni, alla gestione sincrona, caratterizzato dall\u27addebito anticipato, si ? dotato di un server basato sul protocollo standard EPP. Tuttavia, accanto al server EPP, ? stato necessario implementare una serie di procedure "asincrone" dedicate ad un insieme di aspetti coinvolti nella gestione sia dei nomi a dominio sia dei Registrar. Queste procedure erano gi? presenti nel sistema asincrono ma il passaggio al sistema sincrono con la conseguente introduzione del concetto di pre?pagato e la velocizzazione dei processi di registrazione e manutenzione ha comportato un generale ripensamento delle stesse e alla loro implementazione tramite nuove tecnologie. In questo report, sono illustrate una parte di tali procedure asincrone, la cui caratteristica comune ? quella di attivarsi senza il ricorso all\u27interazione con un operatore. Sono illustrate anche le tecnologie di supporto all\u27implementazione delle suddette procedure in ambiente Java EE
Healthcare Terminology Management and Integration in Italy: Where we are and what we need for Semantic Interoperability
Objectives: The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss the adoption and use of medical terminologies and coding systems in Italy, focusing on their management and integration for guaranteeing semantic interoperability among Electronic Health Records (EHRs). Semantic interoperability guarantees meaningful exchange of data between two or more healthcare information systems, ensuring that data content is not only understandable within its original context, but also in the destination one, and is capable of supporting health service management, clinical decision-making care collaboration, as well as public health reporting, and improving clinical research. Methods: The approach used for the coding systems management and integration in the Italian Fascicolo Sanitario Elettronico (FSE) a use case is presented according to the current Italian regulations on federated EHRs. Results: Results show the need to promote an advanced approach, in conformance to the literature best cases, which takes care about a better integration and maintenance of medical terminologies and coding systems through the use of standardized models of terminology services. Conclusion: The paper presents terminology interoperability issues arisen from the described approach and related requirements to propose a solution that could allow, through sophisticated terminology services framework, to achieve also in Italy semantic interoperability
The Impact of Regulated Electric Fleets on the Power Grid: the Car Sharing Case
On-demand mobility services, such as bike and car sharing, are experiencing an exponential growth and are expected to play an essential role in future transportation systems. In addition, car sharing is recognised as a key driving force for the diffusion of electric vehicles (EVs) in urban areas. The impact of a regulated fleet of shared electric cars on the power distribution grid is expected to be significant and very different from that of privately-owned EVs due to: the different mobility patterns (e.g., higher vehicle utilisation, shorter parking times), and the dependence of charging opportunities on the specific layout of the car-sharing station infrastructure. However, these issues are not sufficiently investigated in the research literature. To fill this gap, in this work we make the following two main contributions. First, we formulate a stochastic facility location problem for the optimal deployment of the car sharing stations to provide probabilistic guarantees on parking availability. Second, we analyse the energy demands of the car sharing system under different deployment scenarios and charging technologies, including power sharing. Finally, to test how well our model can be applied to the real world we leverage on a data-driven evaluation methodology based upon the travel demands of an existing car sharing operato
MobCCN: a CCN-compliant protocol for data collection with opportunistic contacts in IoT environments
In IoT environments, a significant fraction of services canbe expected to be relevant and contextualised to the phys-ical area where data is generated. This is due to the typi-cal strong bond between IoT devices and the physical en-vironment where they are located. Moreover, communi-cation patterns may be largely content-centric rather thandevice-centric, as interest would be in getting the data, ir-respective of where they are generated or stored. In thispaper we propose MobCCN, a content-centric network pro-tocol to support data delivery in presence of tiny IoT devices(such as sensors) and users\u27 personal mobile devices (such assmartphones). MobCCN joins together opportunistic net-working techniques (to support contextualised, proximity-based communications) and Information Centric Network-ing (ICN) to support content-centric communication pat-terns. MobCCN defines a new CCN-like routing and for-warding algorithm, which dynamically builds a gradient-based content-dissemination graph using estimates of thecontact rates between nodes, and between nodes and thedata that is produced and stored in the network. While pre-serving compatibility with the standard CCN mechanisms,the MobCCN algorithm makes CCN routing and forward-ing suitable for opportunistic networking environments. Wehave implemented MobCCN in CCN-lite, a de-facto stan-dard lightweight implementation of CCN, which is suitablefor resource-constrained devices. Simulation results conform the feasibility of the proposed approach both in terms ofscalability and efficiency
Data-Sluice: Fine-grained traffic control for Android application
Android applications (apps) generate a consistent amount of data traffic. A noticeable share of this generated data traffic is used to convey third party advertisement, or to collect information about the user and its phone, generally with the target of profiling users. Such a traffic is not needed to the correct app execution and can be considered unwanted overhead. In this paper we propose Data-Sluice, a framework for Android devices which dynamically controls the connections opened by apps, enforcing fine grained policies designed to stop advertisement from altering the user experience, avoiding private data leakage and removing or strongly reducing the data traffic overhead. We apply Data-Sluice to a set of popular Android apps to analyze the generated traffic and removing the data overhead. Furthermore, we exploit Data-Sluice to successfully stop the action of a set of malicious apps
