    Final Learn PAd Metamodels and Implementation of Model Transformations for Managing Business Processes Models in Public Administrations

    This deliverable reports on the tooling chain and related architecture that have been designed and implemented in the context of the Learn PAd project. In particular, a transformation platform has been proposed to underpin the proposed informative learning approach: starting from an enriched business process model, an associated wiki structure is automatically generated. To this end, a final Learn PAd metamodel and associated modeling environments have been defined starting from the preliminary metamodel given in the previous WP3 deliverable D3.2

    Modern public administrations (PAs) are undergoing a profound transformation of their role, from rigid controllers to proactive service providers. However, PA services has to cope with quickly changing context such as : changes in law and regulations, societal globalization, fast technology evolution. As a result PA servants delivering such services to citizens are challenged to learn, to understand and to put in action latest procedures and rules within tight time constraints. The EC FP7 Project Learn PAd enables a model-driven learning approach, through an open platform fostering cooperation and knowledge-sharing and exploiting process simulation for an effective training and assessment. Learn PAd considers learning and working strongly intertwined (learning-while-doing). The platform supports both an informative learning approach based on enriched business process models, and a procedural learning approach based on simulation and monitoring (learning-by-doing). The Learn PAd platform organizes knowledge, and bases the learning activities, according to several model kinds permitting to describe the activities to perform by the PA servants and their working context. Also, the platform relies on formal verification and natural language processing techniques to ensure accuracy of content and documentation. Finally it exploits specialized ontologies and KPIs purposely defined to keep learners engaged

    Collaborative requirements elicitation in a european research project

    A relevant part of the research activities performed in European computer science institutions is funded through European Union (EU) projects. Eliciting and defining requirements for a software system in a distributed environment with heterogeneous stakeholders is generally challenging. In EU projects partners can have different objectives and views, needs are not sharply defined and communication is hampered both by differences in native spoken languages and by the physical distance of the stakeholders.This paper presents the definition and the results of applying an innovative requirements elicitation and refinement approach in the context of an EU financed project (Learn PAd). The approach combines the KJ-method and collaborative wiki-based requirement sessions to come to a set of consolidated requirements. The paper includes the lessons learnt from this experience, also it discusses both the advantages, and the drawbacks of the instantiated approach

    Contribution of non-native species to fish communities in 1940 european lakes: geographical distribution, predictors of occurrence, and proportions in community abundance and biomass

    The invasion of non-native species is considered one of the major threats for biodiversity worldwide. Freshwater ecosystems are still relatively poorly studied in this context, and there is no systematic overview on non-native fish species in European lakes. We took advantage of the important sampling effort and data collection on fish communities following the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive, and compiled information on non-native fish species in 1940 lakes and reservoirs from 13 European countries plus Turkey. Non-native species occurred only in 297 lakes or reservoirs (15.3% of total). The highest proportions of non-natives (>80% of species richness) were found in 38 Irish lakes and 5 reservoirs of Spain and Portugal. The proportions of non-natives in overall lake species richness correlated closely with proportions of non-natives in approximations of total fish abundance and biomass. This strong correlation suggests that non-natives rarely came to community dominance in lakes, which are characterized by a high richness of native species. The dominant predictors of non-native proportions were temperature, precipitation and lake spatial dimensions (area and depth), whereas total phosphorus (TP) concentration was not a significant predictor in a subset of lakes for which TP data were available. We conclude that many European lakes are still relatively unimpacted by fish species invasions, and that the changes observed in dominance structure of fish communities after invasions are still modest

    Non-native species in Ialian freshwater habitats: a macroecological assessment of invasion drivers

    The relative role of propagule pressure, abiotic and biotic variables as determinants of non-native species occurrence differs among studies, hindering the synthesis of emergent patterns in invasion ecology and preventing generalization for conservation actions. In order to produce a broad and general assessment of the occurrence of alien species in aquatic habitats, we proposed a macroecological approach to assess the drivers of occurrence of alien species in all biota (microorganisms, plants and animals) across several natural habitats in freshwater ecosystems in Italy, and we generalised the results of the analysis to provide a risk map of the occurrence of alien species. We determined that abiotic climatic variables were good predictors of alien species occurrence. Indeed, these variables, together with propagule pressure, expressed as the proximity to major inhabited areas, and differences in the receiving community, expressed as the native species richness, played a crucial role in determining the number of alien species. Furthermore, we found evidence of an influence of body size in determining the occurrence of the non-native species. By using the predictions of our model, we addressed the probability of the occurrence of alien species in freshwater habitats across the whole country and highlighted areas at higher risk

    When and how? Freshwater mussel recolonization in Lake Orta

    Thanks to a video posted on a social network, live mussels of Unio elongatulus, have been recorded from Lake Orta (Italy) over one century after the last (and only) report. With its long and well documented history of pollution, Lake Orta offers the opportunity to document the post-extirpation recovery of freshwater unionid mussels. This case evidences that recovery/recolonization is possible despite a high devastation in the past, and permits to evaluate how fast recolonization may occur, in which way, and in what conditions. The answer to the \u27how fast\u27 was sought by estimating the age of the larger and seemingly older individuals of the population. To address the \u27in which way\u27 we compared the haplotypes of Lake Orta specimens of Unio elongatulus (the only species present) with those of surrounding populations. We concluded that, since Lake Orta lacks a direct connection with the putative source populations, colonizing mussels were almost certainly transported by fish carrying glochidia that were used for lake restocking after liming. Data from the long-term monitoring of water chemistry and sediments have allowed defining what conditions proved to be suitable for survival making possible the start of mussels recovery. But not only water and sediment quality matters for mussels recovery, which was delayed by nearly ten years after the reappearance of fish. This delay reflects the need of the whole trophic chain to be reestablished to allow the survival of the suitable and healthy host-fish populations necessary for mussels reproduction
