Il Registro .it e Internet Festival
La presente pubblicazione descrive la genesi della manifestazione Internet Festival, maturata dalla met? degli anni 2000 all\u27interno del Registro .it e in seguito realizzata a partire dal 2011 nella citt? di Pisa, con il concorso delle principali istituzioni locali (Comune di Pisa, Regione Toscana, Universit? degli studi di Pisa e altri), soffermandosi in particolare sul contributo dato negli anni dal Registro stesso all\u27evento. Verr? analizzato il contesto dei principali festival tematici italiani, per poi passare a raccontare la genesi del Festival pisano, dalle prime ipotesi della sua realizzazione all\u27avvio della prima, embrionale edizione, e allo svolgimento delle edizioni successive fino a quella del 2015, l\u27ultima in ordine di tempo rispetto alla data di stesura del presente documento. On Probabilistic Application Compliance
The Security-by-Contract is a paradigm developed to offer a secure environment in which mobile applications can be executed by respecting the security policies of interest. Especially in the Android Apps marketplace, establishing precisely the expected secure app behavior is typically a complex operation that is prone to approximations. Hence, it is worth considering extensions of purely functional approaches that allow the security relevant actions to be quantitatively assessed. This also opens the possibility to balance the application of (expensive) enforcement mechanisms with the security guarantees. With these objectives in view, in thispaper we define a probabilistic extension of the Security-by-Contract model, and we show its impact in real-world scenarios through the analysis of several practical Android applications
Experimental measures of news personalization in Google News
Search engines and social media keep trace of profile- and behavioral-based distinct signals of their users, to provide them person- alized and recommended content. Here, we focus on the level of web search personalization, to estimate the risk of trapping the user into so called Filter Bubbles. Our experimentation has been carried out on news, specifically investigating the Google News platform. Our results are in line with existing literature and call for further analyses on which kind of users are the target of specific recommendations by Google
Text Encoder and Annotator: an all-in-one editor for transcribing and annotating manuscripts with RDF (Extended Version)
In the context of the digitization of manuscripts, transcription and annotation are often distinct, sequential steps. This could lead to difficulties in improving the transcribed text when annotations have already been defined. In order to avoid this, we devised an approach which merges the two steps into the same process. Text Encoder and Annotator (TEA) is a prototype application embracing this concept. TEA is based on a lightweight language syntax which annotates text using Semantic Web technologies. Distributed Coverage of Ego networks in F2F Online Social Networks
Although most online social networks rely on acentralized infrastructure, several proposals of Distributed OnlineSocial Networks (DOSNs) have been recently presented. Sincein DOSNs user profiles are stored on the peers of the usersbelonging to the network, one of the main challenges comes fromguaranteeing the profile availability when the owner of the data isnot online. In this paper, we propose a DOSN based on a friend-to-friend P2P overlay where the user?s data is stored only onfriend peers. Our approach is based on the ego-network concept,which models the social network from the local point of viewof a single user. We propose a distributed algorithm which isbased on the notion of coverage of the ego-network and assuresthat users store their data only on the peers of their friends, andthat each online user can retrieve the private data of its offlinefriends through a common online friend. We formalize this as aNeighbour Dominating Set problem. To help the journal contributors to submit manuscripts that have a high chance to be accepted for publication in Computer Communications, we have identified a set of topics on which journal submissions are solicited. Furthermore, we have prepared survey papers and special issues focusing on these topics (presenting the state of the art in these fields and the open research challenges), with the aim of inspiring the journal contributors. Specifically, these works provide in-depth analyses of some of the hot topics identified in: novel Internet architecture and protocols, including Internet-of-Things (IoT), Information-Centric Networking (ICN), and Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Energy conservation, not only in the wireless part of the network, but in the Internet core; Multi-hop ad hoc networks, from MANET to people-centric networking: MANET, mesh networks, opportunistic networks, vehicular networks and wireless sensor networks, including participatory sensing; the new generation of WLANs technologies and standards and the networking challenges connected with the emergence of cyber-physical, such as smart cities and Online Social Networks.To help the journal contributors to submit manuscripts that have a high chance to be accepted for publication in Computer Communications, we have identified a set of topics on which journal submissions are solicited. Analyzing visually impaired people\u27s touch gestures on smartphones
We present an analysis of how visually impaired people perform gestures on touch-screen smartphones and report their preferences, explaining the procedure and technical implementation that we followed to collect gesture samples. To that end, we recruited 36 visually impaired participants and divided them into two main groups of low-vision and blind people respectively. We then examined their touch-based gesture preferences in terms of number of strokes, multi-touch, and shape angle, as well as their execution in geometric, kinematic and relative terms. For this purpose, we developed a wireless system to simultaneously record sample gestures from several participants, with the possibility of monitoring the capture process. Our results are consistent with previous research regarding the preference of visually impaired users for simple gestures: with one finger, a single stroke, and in one or two cardinal directions. Of the two groups of participants, blind people are less consistent with multi-stroke gestures. In addition, they are more likely than low-vision people to go outside the bounds of the display in the absence of its physical delimitation of, especially with multi-touch gestures. In the case of more complex gestures, rounded shapes are greatly preferred to angular ones, especially by blind people, who have difficulty performing straight gestures with steep or right angles. Based on these results and on previous related research, we offer suggestions to improve gesture accessibility of handheld touchscreen devices
