Exploring the Viability of Gold Jewelry as a Diversifying and Safe-Haven Investment
No full textThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the potential benefits of the inclusion of gold jewelry in a traditional investment portfolio. A popular commodity investment choice, gold has been lauded for its various diversification and safe-haven characteristics. Popular investment forms include paper gold, gold bars and gold coins. However, gold jewelry, although officially categorized as a retail purchase, is often bought with the intention of investment as well. This paper examines the diversification benefits of gold jewelry by measuring the performance of a portfolio in which gold jewelry is present, using multiple performance measures to determine its risk and reward characteristics. A qualitative analysis of gold jewelry demand trends during specified economic periods is conducted to determine if gold jewelry exhibits the characteristics of a safe-haven asset. The paper concludes with an overall analysis of the benefits gold jewelry may provide to a portfolio, along with any risks an investor should be aware of

Living and Dying in \u27Cancer Alley\u27: Using Human Rights Law and Environmental Justice to Create a Litigation Framework for Marginalized Communities
No full textCancer Alley, Louisiana is a poignant example of the intersection between environmental justice, legal harm, and human rights abuses. This thesis dissects the laws and policies underpinning the creation of Cancer Alley with special attention to how they constitute human rights abuses under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
Then, by performing a comprehensive analysis of litigation surrounding environmental justice in Louisiana, this thesis scrutinizes the efficacy of environmental law in creating environmental justice and suggests the integration of international human rights law and environmental law as a path forward.
Drawing upon this analysis, the thesis proposes a litigation framework grounded in human rights law to empower marginalized communities in seeking accountability. It advocates for a \u27bottom-up\u27 approach and emphasizes the importance of centering marginalized voices in the environmental justice movement

Critical Pedagogy in School Music Programs: Examining the Connections and Disconnections Between Teacher Preparation and Active Teaching
No full textMusic education scholarship has long called for a more critical, socially just approach to teacher preparation. These include curricular opportunities to work with students from diverse contexts in practicum settings, social-justice-oriented readings and professional development, and guided reflection opportunities. However, scholars also note that practicing educators often revert to “traditional” methods of teaching once they enter the field, suggesting a disconnect between music teacher education and practice. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the experiences of three recent alumni of one music teacher education program, paying particular attention to the ways in which these teachers engage or do not engage in socially just practices in their music classrooms. In particular, we focused on how their experiences as music education students impacted their practices as they relate to social justice. We also examined possible barriers that may make socially just engagements challenging. Findings suggest that engaging in both theoretical and contextually applied approaches to critical pedagogy is particularly important. Findings also suggest that practicing educators may face challenges including navigating accountability measures and finding a balance between meeting the needs of students in the classroom while simultaneously challenging oppressive structures. This project has the potential to inform how we can best incorporate a more inclusive and critical pedagogy in ways that are practical for teachers as they enter their first year of teaching and may also result in resources to support critical pedagogy and social justice in music classrooms
