    An Exploration of Antibiotic Resistance in Zoonotic Streptococcus canis: From Susceptibility Testing to Genomic Profiling

    Streptococcus canis, a zoonotic pathogen primarily associated with infections in companion animals, has recently been recognized as a cause of human infections. This study investigated the antibiotic resistance in S. canis, focusing on seven isolates obtained from previous cases submitted to the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory. Their identities were confirmed using phenotypic assays via the Omnilog PM System (Biolog Inc., Hayward, CA). Antibiotic susceptibility profiles were determined via the Kirby-Bauer Disk Diffusion Susceptibility Test, employing a panel of antibiotics commonly used against gram-positive bacteria as recommended by the Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) for Veterinary Medicine. Bacterial DNA extraction was performed using Qiagen’s DNeasy Blood & Tissue Kit (Qiagen, Redwood City, CA), followed by high molecular weight DNA extraction using the Wizard® HMW Extraction Kit (Promega, Madison, WI). Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was accomplished by preparing libraries using Illumina DNA Prep Kits with Nextera Indexes (Illumina, San Diego, CA). Sequences were screened for determinants of antibiotic resistance. Eighty-six percent exhibited phenotypic resistance to tetracycline. Genes associated with tetracycline and macrolide resistance were detected using NGS. The detection of resistance genes suggests antibiotic resistance and potential zoonotic spillover. Therefore, understanding the antibiotic resistance patterns of the understudied S. canis is essential for monitoring its potential impact on human and animal health

    A Content Analysis of Graduate Degrees in Music Education in NASM Accredited Institutions

    The purpose of this study was to examine graduate degree programs in music education in NASM accredited institutions with the specific areas of degree and institution information, admissions, and curricula. For this content analysis, I collected data through the websites of NASM accredited institutions that offered graduate degrees in music education, including master’s degrees (N = 203) and doctoral degrees (n = 53). The institution and degree information for these graduate degree programs included types of degrees offered, format of degrees (e.g., summers only, distance learning), location where the programs were located, and Carnegie Classifications (American Council on Education, 2023). The admissions category included degrees and materials required for admittance (e.g., teaching videos, writing samples). For the third category, curricula, I established the frequency of coursework that was required and optional for graduate programs. The results from this study indicate that graduate programs in music education were predominately in public institutions, in a fall/spring semester format, and required students to complete coursework to develop research skills. Additionally, the Master of Music (MM) and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) were the primary graduate degrees offered for advanced degrees in music education. The results from this study provide a platform for music teacher educators to examine current practices and curricula of graduate programs throughout the United States

    A Survey of K-12 Music Teachers’ Classroom Management Experiences in Music Teacher Preparation Programs

    The purpose of this follow-up study was to explore classroom management sources and content in music teacher preparation programs. K-12 music educators, who self-identified as members of various professional music education organizations, were the participants in this study. Similar to the initial iteration of the survey with elementary general music educators, recurrent sources of classroom management reported by participants included mentoring from a licensed teacher and supervised fieldwork. Teaching procedures and pacing instructions were common examples of classroom management content included in a music teacher education program, which differed slightly from those identified by elementary general music teachers. Mentoring from a licensed teacher and supervised fieldwork were the two sources of classroom management preparation with which participants were most satisfied; however, the majority of participants did not view their classroom management preparation to be sufficient. These findings suggest that music teacher educators might continue to provide an array of experiences, within music education programs, for students to actively practice classroom management skills and strategies
