The Light Scattering Properties of Amorphous Nanoparticles Formed By Poorly Soluble Drugs
The research of amorphous drug formulations is an emerging field of study, which offers a promising strategy to improve the oral bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs. A critical aspect of amorphous solubility is the measurement of particle size and light diffraction, which is measured using dynamic light scattering (DLS). DLS is a technique used to characterize the size of colloidal dispersions, where a laser beam illuminates a suspension of particles or molecules undergoing Brownian motion. In this experiment, a procedure was developed utilizing DLS to investigate the similarities and differences in light diffraction properties of particles among three different poorly water-soluble drugs. It was determined that there is a significant difference in light diffraction particles of different drugs despite the drug particles being the same size. As a quality control measure, particle size was manipulated and configured using different techniques to be similar among all three drugs. Budgeting for the Moon: A Comparative Analysis of Public Support and Financial Performance in the Apollo and Artemis Eras
The Artemis program aims to land mankind on the lunar surface for the first time in over fifty years in a vastly changed social and economic climate. In this study, I examine existing literature to contextualize and compare the origins, Congressional authorization and appropriations processes, and public accountability mechanisms of the Apollo program (1961-1972) and the Artemis program (2017-present). I utilize multivariate regression models to examine Congressional responsiveness to public opinions of lunar exploration programs. I find that Congress appears to be responsive to constituent attitudes regarding space exploration, particularly during the Apollo era. I also examine the relationship between funding levels and program metrics and observe a pronounced correlation between underfunding and both cost delays and schedule overruns
Using Bivalves as an Indicator for Fecal Bacteria
This project focuses on the integration of fecal bacteria from warm-blooded animals into bivalve tissue, and the utilization of bivalves as an indicator for fecal bacteria in waterways. Bivalves may give a more representative long-term average of fecal bacteria in water as compared to direct water testing. The primary objective is to create a standard operating procedure to use bacterial testing of bivalves as a proxy for bacteria concentration in the water. This method can be used in places where bivalves do not already exist by adding them to a body of water, or by collecting bivalves that already exist in a water body, and in both cases, then testing them for fecal bacteria contents. We conducted a study measuring fecal coliform in Oxecossett Brook, Stonington, CT, over 8 consecutive days, then tested the coliform content of existing wild ribbed mussels (Geukensia demissa) at the collection site on the final day. The average fecal coliform from direct water testing was 1243 MPN/100mL and the average fecal coliform in mussel collected was 91 MPN/g. The results show that ribbed mussels may be a good indicator of bacteria levels, but more research is needed
Non-Conformity as Queerness: The Phenomenology of Gender Identity Beyond the Binary
Gender non-conformity is a defiance of fixed binary ideas of gender identity and expression which are enforced within societies. The phenomenological concept of breaking free from expectations based on one’s gender assigned at birth allows freedom of expression and an acceptance of non-conformity. Building on the works of Judith Butler, Sara Ahmed, María Lugones, and Iria Marion Young, among others, the act of performance and queering one’s identity and actions are explored. Gender identity is constantly evolving, and each expectation of what one’s gender expression should look like is a performance put on to conform. Individuals are not born with ideas of how they will perform their gender, rather ideas are forced upon them and teach them how they should look and act based on their gender assigned at birth. Queerness inherently disrupts societal norms, redefining identity through queering one’s gender expression and actions. Historical frameworks and epistemological biases that fail to recognize diverse identities and experiences are critiqued and combated with an emphasis on the intersectionality of race, gender, and sexuality. Personal reflection and discussion of lived experiences of gender non-conforming individuals highlight the complexities of identity expression and opposition to conformity. The advocacy for a more inclusive understanding of gender and identity emphasizes the freedom of non-conformity in dismantling systems of oppression and envisioning a more equitable future
