Trends and Transport of Tropospheric Ozone From New York City to Connecticut in the Summer of 2023

    No full text
Tropospheric Ozone, or O3, is a criteria pollutant contributing to most of Connecticut and New York City’s poor air quality days. It has adverse effects on human health, particularly for high-risk individuals. Ozone is produced by nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds from fuel combustion reacting with sunlight. The Ozone Transport Region (OTR) is a collection of states in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic United States that experience cross-state pollution of O3. Connecticut has multiple days a year where O3 values exceed the National Ambient Air Quality Standards, requiring additional monitoring and standards because it falls in the OTR— partially due to upstream transport from New York City, Connecticut experiences increased O3 concentrations in the summer months. Connecticut has seen declines in poor air quality days from O3 every year due to the regulations on ozone and its precursors. We use ground-based Lidar, Air Quality System data, and a back-trajectory model to examine a case of ozone enhancement in Connecticut caused by air pollutants from New York City between June and August 2023. During this time, Connecticut\u27s ozone enhancement was caused by air pollutants from New York City. As a result, New York City and Connecticut saw similar O3 spikes and decline trends. High-temperature days increase O3 in both locations and wind out of the southwest may transport O3 to Connecticut. Production and transport of O3 from New York City contribute to Connecticut’s poor air quality days, resulting in the need for interstate agreements on pollution management

    Evicted by Default

    No full text
The prevalence of default judgments in eviction cases affects housing stability and raises concerns about access to procedural justice for tenants. There is substantial variation across states in the rules governing default judgments that may contribute to variation in the frequency of eviction cases ending in defaults. In this Article, we first construct an original dataset of eviction case data from one jurisdiction and analyze that quantitatively, assessing the share of eviction cases that experience a default, the share of cases that are cured, and the correlates of cases ending in default judgment. Second, we review the state of the law in all fifty states with regard to three categories of eviction default judgment rules, specifically rules related to the entry of default, the entry of judgment following default, and the removal of a default judgment

“Even if I’m an international student, I have a voice and I should make a stand”: A Phenomenological inquiry into international students’ development of critical agency in U.S. higher education

    No full text
International students’ experiences with race and racism in U.S. higher education have received increasing scholarly attention. However, few empirical studies explore how these students resist and develop critical agency in response to systemic racism. This represents a significant gap, as international students can serve as important transnational allies in racial and social justice movements both in the U.S. and globally. To address this gap, this dissertation employs a phenomenological approach to examine the development of critical agency among 19 international students of color in the U.S. higher education. This study contributes to the broader discourse in Comparative and International Higher Education by challenging deficit paradigms, offering a more empowering and nuanced understanding of this population, and highlighting the outcomes of international student mobility beyond economic rationales

A Research Guide and Annotated Bibliography for The Comparative Study of LGBTQIA+ Social Movements Across East Asia

    No full text
This bibliography includes literature on how LGBTQIA+ movements across East Asia have evolved through local histories, politics, and cultural understandings of sexuality. While many societies had pre-existing, non-Western concepts of same-sex relations, post-1990s democratization and global human rights discourse reshaped activism in distinct ways. Movements in places like the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of China (Taiwan), South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong engage with nationalism, decolonial perspectives, and social norms to construct unique approaches to queer rights. The guide highlights the need to understand LGBTQIA+ activism through each society’s specific historical and political context

Experiences of College Students with Visual Disabilities During the COVID-19

    No full text
This case study explores the experiences of Nepalese college students with visual disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, applying Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory as a theoretical framework. Through in-depth interviews with eight students with visual disabilities studying bachelor and master level at a public college, this research describes challenges and chances across five primary domains of the ecological perspective. The study showed the critical role of immediate support circles in academic and social contexts, the needed interactions between parents and educational institutions, observable gaps in institutional support and government policies, and the dual role of the pandemic as a challenge and a stimulus for self-efficacy. The study suggests the need for a comprehensive approach to supporting college students with visual disabilities, integrating effective support networks, fostering continuous stakeholder discourse, and enhancing interactive policy and pedagogical flexibility during pandemic and general situation
