Generative AI for College Students: A Collaboratively Developed Online Microcourse on GenAI in the College Classroom
Academic libraries have taken a variety of approaches to addressing the opportunities and challenges of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in higher education. For universities that have no standard policy around GenAI, instructors are left with little guidance on how to teach students about GenAI in the classroom and may have varying levels of comfort with GenAI and its applications. To address the need for more instruction around GenAI, a team of librarians and university writing center and digital media suite staff took an innovative approach to teaching AI literacy by creating a six-lesson microcourse in their learning management system all about GenAI: how it works, its limitations, and how to use it efficiently and ethically for college research and writing. Microlearning offers a robust avenue for delivering instruction created by multiple experts, while also considering instructors’ time constraints around addressing both course content and AI literacy
Impacts of Parent Separation Within Siblings: A Literature Review
Parent-child separation is a growing global issue that impacts millions of families. Although there is research on how an individual child might be impacted by separation from their parents, less is known about siblings. The importance of understanding the individual first and looking at attachment theory and resilience, its role it plays. The study serves to investigate the traumatic events of parent separation through loss whether death, divorce or immigration and seeing the gaps of literature when talking about these topics. This data relies on different literature and different research that shows how a traumatizing event can impact a child\u27s life and their siblings. Findings indicated that there are some cases where siblings can have different impacts in their life but it is very limited. The different outcomes within siblings are seen by the peer relationships they create and genetics but there is not a lot of research out there
Illuminating Two Secondary Schoolteachers’ Praxes on a ‘terrain of freedom:’ Lessons for Teacher Education
This paper attunes to the stated focus of this special issue—teacher subjectivities on a terrain of freedom—to consider the qualities, possibilities and limits of teachers’ praxes and development upon this ‘terrain.’ In response to the call, we explore three critical questions: 1) Where does the teacher’s freedom lie amidst required protocols and standardization?; 2) Can teachers transcend how they have been conceived and conditioned?; and 3) How can teachers engage in transformative development? Through a poetics of teaching, inspired by Hansen (2004), we frame teaching as a curricular and pedagogical art form that melds interdisciplinary, intellectual, aesthetic, and moral dimensions to enrich the professional and personal livelihoods of teachers and, in turn, students. This approach supports UNESCO\u27s (2021) principles of lifelong professional learning and the nurturing of the different global and local ecosystems that connect to our K-12 classrooms. Drawing on empirical research from a pilot study, this article highlights the transformative practices of two secondary school teachers as they navigate and expand upon their professional “terrain of freedom,” demonstrating different institutional possibilities and constraints. Our findings suggest that teacher education programs should cultivate environments that encourage innovation, critical reflection, and ethical engagement, aligning with UNESCO’s calls for a new social contract that advocates for teachers as agents of change in reimagining education for more just and sustainable futures. These lessons learned from our pilot study underscore the need, as we suggest, for teacher education to nurture, support, and sustain professional educators capable of transforming curriculum, their pedagogical, and classroom communities toward and on behalf of the public good
Expanding and Mainstreaming Sociohydrology Toward Transdisciplinary Praxis
Since its development in the early 2010s, sociohydrology has deepened our understanding of the long-term coevolution of humans and water by integrating insights from both the natural and social sciences, while also fostering an interdisciplinary community. Its modus operandi to date has been to focus on emergent phenomena, manifesting as unintended consequences, in a variety of contexts. The compound disaster that struck Japan’s Noto Peninsula in 2024, and similar experiences in other parts of the world, underscore the urgent need for systemic approaches that are co-developed by academia and practitioners and focus on context-specific solutions. This perspective piece thus calls for expanding and mainstreaming sociohydrology toward transdisciplinary praxis—transforming it into a dynamic and solution-oriented field that is more inclusive at all levels. Sociohydrology must become a driving force for innovation—promoting sustainable solutions that engage and empower local actors through transformative-transdisciplinary actions—involving real people in real places. Only through such transformative praxis can we co-create equitable, sustainable, and context-sensitive responses to the world’s most pressing water challenges
Whipped into Shape: Infrastructure as Punishment for the Unruly Citizen
This article interrogates how inflexible designs and policies of airline seating, as well as critical socio-political rhetoric, discipline and marginalize bodies that do not conform to normative standards. Situating airline seating within fat and disability studies models, Mortimer argues that these punitive measures are not neutral, but rather reflective of cultural narratives of productivity, morality, and bodily discipline. Mortimer draws from ethnographic analyses of first-person accounts and policy reviews to demonstrate how shrinking seats, rigid policies, and moralized discourse construct a “space of calculability” that pressures fat individuals to monitor and minimize their bodies to justify their presence in public space. Mortimer’s article concludes with a call to action: not only is further research toward fat justice needed, but also collective political intervention and a broader societal shift in conceptualizing body diversity and value to transform public policy and perception
Homework, Households, and Hurdles: the Unexpected Drivers of Student Graduation Perceptions
Students’ perceptions of their likelihood to graduate are important determinants of their academic engagement, yet these perceptions remain understudied. This study, which is based on the 2021 Monitoring the Future survey of 8th- and 10th-grade students in the United States, uses machine learning algorithms to identify the most important factors that influence these perceptions. Among the tested models, random forest provided the best classification performance. Using permutation-based feature importance, we identified frequent participation in schoolwork, maternal education, paternal education, and homework completion as the most important predictors of students’ graduation perceptions. These results highlight the importance of targeted and well-coordinated intervention measures and policy reforms that can boost students’ engagement in learning and parental education support, especially for students from underrepresented populations or low-income families. As such, this study provides evidence-based insights to guide educational strategies aimed at improving academic outcomes and reducing disparities by identifying key contributors to students’ views on graduating

Development of a Low-Cost Electron Microscope for Educational Purposes
Electron microscopy is a powerful tool for exploring microscopic world, yet its high cost and operational complexity severely limit accessibility, particularly within educational institutions. Commercial systems are often designed as opaque black boxes, further hindering hands-on learning and experimentation. This dissertation introduces the Educational Scanning/Transmission Electron Microscope (EduSEM), a project designed to overcome these barriers by developing a low-cost, modular, and transparent electron microscope optimized for educational use.
The EduSEM achieves significant cost reduction by operating in a rough vacuum environment (1-20 mTorr), eliminating the need for expensive high-vacuum pumps. This necessitates novel component designs tolerant of higher pressures. The primary contributions include a durable Radio Frequency Inductively Coupled Plasma (RF ICP) electron source capable of stable operation and electron extraction (up to 100 µA demonstrated) in rough vacuum; an innovative, high-gain backscatter electron detector utilizing a GAGG:Ce scintillator coupled to a Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM), offering cost-effective performance without requiring high voltage biasing within the chamber; and a highly modular architecture for both the physical column, allowing components to be easily reconfigured and stacked for different operational modes, and the modular electronics system. The electronics framework employs standardized, wirelessly controlled modules based on the RP2040 microcontroller and MicroPython, featuring a remote interface system that simplifies development, reduces cabling complexity, enhances noise immunity, and promotes component reusability for broader instrumentation applications.
The design, construction, and testing of the EduSEM system and its core components are presented. Preliminary results demonstrate successful TEM imaging capabilities, initial characterization of the RF ICP source plasma properties and beam behavior, and validation of the backscatter detector performance compared to commercial detectors. The modular electronics framework has been successfully implemented across various subsystems, including lens current drivers, RF generation and measurement, beam deflection amplifiers, scan control, detector interfaces, high-voltage power supply control, and Langmuir probe instrumentation.
The EduSEM project demonstrates a viable approach to creating affordable, accessible, and educationally valuable electron microscopes. By prioritizing modularity, transparency, and robust operation in less-ideal conditions, it provides a platform that not only facilitates microscale imaging but also fosters deeper engagement with instrument design, systems thinking, and experimental physics
Weak Formulation for Solving Inverse Problems in Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces (With Applications to Learning Dynamical Systems)
We combine numerical and machine learning techniques to present a general framework for solving inverse problems using vector valued reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces in a variational formulation. We present this framework in two papers. In the first paper, we present an original state-of-the-art method derived in the context of our general framework for learning dynamical systems. In the second paper, we generalize the method from our first paper to arrive at the framework for solving inverse problems. Then we apply our general framework to the task of learning dynamical systems. In both papers we consider numerous applications of our methods and demonstrate the effectiveness of our methods with experiments on datasets from dynamical systems. Our experiments demonstrate our methods are both computationally efficient and provide compelling performance on the task of learning dynamical systems

Riley Davidson had no intentions of returning to his hometown of Fischer, Minnesota after he left several years ago. He moved to Minneapolis, embraced his inner writer, and put everything he went through growing up in Fischer behind him. But when his father dies, he finds he must return to the place he grew up. Once back in Fischer, Riley immediately starts feeling the weight of the place he left.
