A Postcolonial Re-Telling of the Life and Times of Dr. Bethenia Owens-Adair
This thesis seeks to explore the story of Dr. Bethenia Owens-Adair, one of the first female doctors in the Pacific Northwest, who wrote the bill that would one day enact Oregon\u27s long standing eugenic sterilization laws. Utilizing postcolonial framework primarily provided by psychiatrist and political writer Frantz Fanon, and supplemental literature from historian Ann Stoler, this paper will look into Dr. Adair\u27s life story and her eugenic efforts in an attempt to understand the colonial roots of turn-of-the-century beliefs about bodies, behavior, and will ultimately aim to question how these beliefs may still reverberate through society today
A Failure to Converge? the Use of Convergent Designs in Mixed Methods Research
Prior studies show that what are known as “convergent” designs are the most common form of mixed methods research, yet there has been too little investigation into what researchers actually do when they use convergent designs. This study addresses that gap in the literature by investi-gating not only the prevalence of convergent designs but also the types of convergent designs used and the degree of integration in studies that used this design. I used content analysis to ex-amine a random sample of 500 articles from the Web of Science that mentioned mixed methods and were published in 2023. The results show that nearly 70 percent of all studies used conver-gent designs. In addition, the level of integration was very low, with a median of 0.4 on a scale from zero (no integration) to four (thorough integration). Overall, despite their popularity, con-vergent designs remain a problematic technique in mixed methods research
A Groundwater Flow System Investigation in the Upper Rowena Creek Drainage, Oregon
Groundwater level declines are a growing concern within the upper Rowena Creek drainage, Oregon. This area is home to a small community located on the upper limb of the Columbia Hills anticline, where local residents rely on aquifers within the Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG) for domestic water supplies. Groundwater level declines in CRBG aquifers have been studied more extensively in the Mosier area, which lies approximately 5 miles to the northwest of Rowena, but there has been little research conducted specifically on the upper Rowena Creek drainage area. Rowena is located higher up the dip of the Columbia Hills Anticline, where some of the younger CRBG flows found in the Mosier area are less prevalent and less utilized for water supply. The groundwater flow system around Rowena Creek is not well understood and is further complicated by a local fault, called the Rowena Creek Fault, and proximity to the crest of the Columbia Hills anticline.
This study investigates the groundwater flow system in the upper Rowena Creek area using existing geology and well construction information available from the Oregon Water Resources Department (OWRD), rock geochemistry, and stable isotope and major ion water chemistry. A local stratigraphy for the Rowena area is developed and applied to contextualize trends in groundwater levels and water chemistry results. Static water level elevation information compiled from OWRD, and supplemented with the collection of additional measurements for two wells, indicates that this area experiences falling hydraulic head with depth, indicating that it is a groundwater recharge zone. Stable isotope water chemistry results support this observation and indicate that precipitation recharging groundwater in the Rowena area is local to the rain shadow of the Cascade Range. Major ion water chemistry results indicate that groundwater on the east and west sides of the Rowena Creek is chemically distinct, suggesting that the creek may be acting as a discharge boundary. These water chemistry results and static water level elevations suggest that observed groundwater level declines around the Rowena area may be related to the limited availability of recharge created by a hyper- local groundwater flow system bounded by Rowena Creek and the crest of the Columbia Hills anticline. Therefore, careful management of currently available groundwater resources will likely be important to ensuring the long-term sustainability of groundwater resources in this area

This paper shows that certain 3F4 hypergeometric functions can be expanded in sums of pair products of 1F2 functions. In special cases, the 3F4 hypergeometric functions reduce to 2F3 functions. Further special cases allow one to reduce the 2F3 functions to 1F2 functions, and the sums to products of 0F1 (Bessel) and 1F2 functions. The class of hypergeometric functions with summation theorems are thereby expanded beyond those expressible as pair-products of 2F1 functions, 3F2 functions, and generalized Whittaker functions, into the realm of pFq functions where p \u3c q for both the summand and terms in the series
Under the Influence of Parents: A Longitudinal Study of Children\u27s Walking
Introduction:
As daily physical activities, including active transportation, improve children\u27s health, studying predictors of children\u27s walking for all purposes rather than just walking to and from school is necessary. Relationships between the behavior, perceptions, and attitudes of children and their parents (or guardians) about walking are important because children\u27s decisions about travel are not made independently of the influence of their parents or guardians. In addition, findings from cross-sectional studies may not be sufficient to explain children\u27s walking since their relationship is persistent. Therefore, we examined the longitudinal relationship between children\u27s and parents\u27 perceptions and walking behavior.
Methods:
We used two-wave panel data of 182 children aged 4–16 and their parents in Portland, Oregon, USA. We estimated a cross-lagged panel model (CLPM) to analyze the continuous relationships between children\u27s and parent\u27s perceptions and walking behaviors. Data were collected through surveys, accelerometers, and GPS units.
Results:
We found that when parents walked more, their children also walked more in both periods. Parents\u27 positive safety perceptions about their children\u27s walking environment in terms of strangers and traffic significantly increased children\u27s walking time. Children\u27s safety perceptions (only in the second period) and time-related perceived behavioral control (in both periods) affected their attitude toward walking but not walking time.
Conclusion:
Our study reveals meaningful relationships between the attitudes and behaviors of parents\u27 and children\u27s walking based on repeated observations over two years. Given our results, neighborhoods that are good for parents to walk in positively affect children\u27s walking. Parental walking needs to precede to encourage continuous children\u27s walking
What Language \u3cem\u3eAre\u3c/em\u3e We Speaking?: Marketing Information Literacy on University Library Websites
This study investigates how Canadian university libraries communicate information literacy (IL) to non-library faculty members on faculty-facing web pages. A content analysis was conducted of websites from institutions affiliated with the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (n = 25) to identify trends in the terminology used to describe IL. The findings reveal that the term information literacy appears with varying frequency across website headings, subheadings and body text, while terms like “research skills” and “critical information use” may appear in its stead. University libraries may intentionally be employing these terms to enhance faculty engagement in response to the existing literature, which suggests non-library faculty generally dislike IL jargon. These findings have implications for how academic libraries market their IL-related services to non-library faculty, suggesting a need for further research into how the work of IL can be effectively communicated to non-library audiences

The Impact of NICU Death on Bereaved Mothers
Infant loss in the United States occurs 5.6 per 1,000 live births. This paper examines risk factors that contribute to neonatal death. Prematurity is a risk factor for NICU admission. A portion of premature babies receiving care in the NICU will die. The stressful nature of the NICU has been studied widely in journals. The impact of NICU death on hospital staff and bereaved parents has been studied less. Mortality studies suggest that bereaved mothers are at a high risk of dying within the first 5 years after their child has died. Despite the frequency of maternal death post-child loss, almost no psychological research has been conducted on mothers who have experienced NICU death. The impact of Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has more recently been studied. Despite the growing number of studies on PGD and PTSD, the NICU bereaved parent community has not been included explicitly. Analyzing research from social statistics, public health, neuroscience, epidemiology, and medical literature may help support more research on this demographic
