Managing Happiness in the Mexican Maquiladora Industry: a Turnover Management Challenge
This study explores a turnover management case by implementing exploratory Human-Centered Design (HCD) strategies, combining a collaborative tool in a Mexican maquiladora in Tecate, Baja California. To reduce turnover, the tool was designed, prototyped, and tested to foster the emotional well-being of employees, enhance employee engagement, and promote a sense of belonging in the workplace. The company leaders and managers were trained to use the HCD prototypes, such as the Happiness Dashboard, a visual feedback system using emojis to collect data during regular shifts, and the Gemba Walks, a method for collecting information through observing and interacting with workers. Organizational strategies for maquiladoras were identified to reduce turnover rates and increase talent loyalty. Our findings align with emerging research that suggests the importance of combining emotional salary, work flexibility, and emotional support with economic benefits. After thirteen months of gathering data, the results show decreased employee turnover from 11.8% to 5.8% and increased satisfaction and work commitment. We suggest three propositions that were formulated based on (1) the leaders\u27 interest in their employees, (2) attention to their psychosocial needs, and (3) the positive influence of job satisfaction and staff retention. Our study provides empirical evidence that supports the three propositions, prioritizing human well-being in the workplace, its feasibility, and results in tangible benefits for the organization from a human-centered perspective. This engineering management methodology can be replicated in similar contexts, offering new perspectives for future research at the intersection between happiness management and organizational performance
Essential Knowledge for Serving Bilingual Youth: the Perspectives of Adult Former English Learners
This study, framed by dignity-focused language policy and intersectional anti-adultism, investigates how 74 adults misclassified as English learners (ELs) during U.S. K-12 education conceptualize essential knowledge for educating bilingual students. Through semi-structured interviews, participants stressed two key areas for schools that serve bilingual students: recognizing students’ nuanced linguistic histories and acknowledging students as education partners. The findings emphasize centering impacted individuals’ perspectives, advocating for eliminating racial bias in EL policy implementation, and addressing institutionalized adultism in EL policy. Implications include the need for professional learning, policy, and practices prioritizing EL youths’ perspectives
Cuadros de Casta: A Pseudo-Scientific Means of Control and Racial Taxonomy in Colonial Mexico
Casta paintings of 18th century Mexico are a prime example of an art form mixed with political propaganda, as the 4x4 style paintings depicted over a dozen racial mixings in one painting. Created by Mexican artists for the viewing of Spanish elites, Casta paintings helped to establish the racial hierarchy that continues to be embedded into Latin American society. This paper seeks to determine to what degree Casta paintings served as hierarchical means of Christian, Enlightenment-era colonial control.

Cuju: The Ancient Chinese Game That Held an Empire Together
This paper explores how cuju, an ancient sport known as the predecessor of modern football, evolved from the Han to Song dynasties (206 BCE–1368 CE) as a unifying force in imperial China. Calling upon primary sources such as ancient cuju manuals and various art pieces suggests this sport\u27s importance went beyond a leisurely practice. Using academic journals about Chinese history and the development of cuju from different academic fields and, most notably, the FIFA museum’s online exhibit of cuju, the reason cuju had such a strong place of value in Chinese society was apparent. Beginning as a combat exercise in the Han dynasty\u27s military, cuju expanded, eventually breaking social barriers, offering moments where class divisions blurred, even allowing women, despite strict patriarchal norms, opportunities to participate, and helping imperial leaders foster unity where political systems fell short.

This presentation will tell the tale of two textbooks, one that has been successfully used in a class, and one that never was. The processes used in each case are shared, plus lessons learned on connecting text to course material, while making sure it is accessible
Comparing Mentored Research Experiences for undergraduates across institutional contexts
Background: Mentored undergraduate research experiences (UREs) can play a critical role in developing science identity and skills, especially for students from historically underrepresented backgrounds. This study investigates science identity and responsibility for scientific roles among scholars in a program aiming to diversify the biomedical workforce. Scholars were placed in UREs at either their home institution (a minority-serving institution [MSI]) or at a research-intensive medical institution with a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA). Methods: We analyze data from surveys administered annually to the scholars. We first compare changes in science identity for scholars placed at the MSI and the CTSA site from the term after the scholar started their URE to one year later. We then analyze differences in responsibility in scientific roles performed by scholars at the two institutions. Results: We found evidence of gains in science identity after a year for scholars placed at both institutions but of a somewhat larger magnitude at the CTSA site. However, no significant differences were observed across institutions on science identity at the endpoint. An exploration of scientific roles suggests that scholars at the CTSA site assumed more responsibility in roles related to data curation and analysis, while scholars at the MSI had higher responsibility for resource acquisition-related roles. Conclusion: These results suggest that CTSA site URE placements may offer distinct opportunities for both identity formation and skill development beyond placements at home institutions. Overall, these results suggest opportunities for partnerships between MSIs and CTSA sites in the training of biomedical researchers
Which Offer Should I Take? the Impact of Various Recruiting Factors on Accounting Students\u27 Internship Choice
This study investigates factors in the recruiting process that influence accounting students’ choice of internship offers, especially when multiple internship offers are present. We surveyed 254 graduate students over several years after being recruited for busy season internships; 196 students received multiple offers and form our primary participant group. We find that students’ perceptions of seniors and staff personalities is the most influential factor during the recruiting process. Personality perceptions of other firm personnel, office visits, and internship location were also among the most influential factors in recruiting when students had to choose among multiple offers. We also find that, among students receiving multiple internship offers, female students receive significantly more internship offers than male students, and tax students receive significantly more offers than audit students
Online Crime Reporting: Procedural Justice and Victims\u27 Psychological Outcomes
Online crime reporting is a newly emerging reporting method that is gaining popularity among law enforcement agencies globally for its efficiency, yet, little is known about the potential impacts of these systems on victims. This study aims to determine whether or not online systems are delivering a procedurally just experience to property crime victims, and to what extent this may impact their psychological well-being. The study uses survey responses from victims (N=788) using the Portland Police Bureau’s online reporting system. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to identify significant relationships between a variety of procedural justice factors and control variables. Significant findings from the analyses support the idea that low levels of perceived procedural justice delivered via the online system are significantly correlated with elevated levels of psychological distress for victims. The results of this study emphasize the need for further research on procedural justice in technology-mediated communications between law enforcement and crime victims and a greater knowledge of how online reporting impacts victims\u27 psychological outcomes
Descending an Inclined Plane with a Large Language Model
[This paper is part of the Focused Collection in Artificial Intelligence Tools in Physics Teaching and Physics Education Research.] We present a study in which a version of a common conservation of mechanical energy introductory physics problem, an object released on an inclined plane, is given to OpenAI’s GPT-4 large language model (LLM). We investigate how different permutations of object, action verb, and property of the incline impact the responses of the LLM. The problem setup and prompting was left purposefully minimal, requiring the LLM to state multiple assumptions to justify the final answer. We specifically studied how different keywords lead the LLM to analyze the system as rolling versus sliding and how this may be different from physics experts and novice learners. We found that domain-specific terminology may impact the LLM differently from students. Even for correct answers, it generally did not specify the necessary assumptions it needed to state to come to this solution, falling short of what would be expected from an expert instructor. When conflicting information was provided, the LLM generally did not indicate that was the case in its responses. Both issues are weaknesses that could be remedied by additional prompting; however, they remain shortcomings in the context of physics teaching. While specific to introductory physics, this study provides insight into how LLMs respond to variations of a problem within a specific topic area and how their strengths and weaknesses may differ from those of humans. Understanding these differences, and tracking them as LLMs change in their capabilities, is crucial for assessing the impact of artificial intelligence on education
