    Persona Journey Mapping to Drive Equity During an LMS Transition

    Technology systems that support learning–such as Learning Management Systems, or LMS’s–can change frequently in higher education. This often creates significant challenges for faculty-support staff during a transition–or migration–period. When equitable practice is deprioritized during these migrations, there is a high chance that stakeholders will experience adoption resistance, putting the project’s success and subsequent student experience at risk. Using a vignette and case study qualitative methodological approach, three researchers at a large urban university in the Pacific Northwest detail personas and journey mapping as an equitable design practice during a LMS migration on a rapid development timeline. This paper details how personas were created, how journey mapping impacted various teams, and how centering equity better prepared staff to support instructors throughout the migration while addressing the student learning impact

    Are Vehicle Tires Major Contributors to Microplastic Emissions into the China Seas? A Simple Model Perspective.

    Microplastics pose a substantial threat to our environment. Given China\u27s large population and rapid economic growth, it is urgent to estimate the annual emissions of microplastics into its marine environment. The microplastics show a significant variation in their source emissions as well as in their physical and chemical properties, leading to differences in their transport and fate in aquatic environments. To account for these variations, we developed a process-oriented model that considers microplastics from different sources and the inter-provincial variation in their retention rate to assess annual microplastic emissions into the China seas. On a national scale, of the microplastics emitted, 36.05 % are from household laundry activities, 27.26 % are from the wear and tear of vehicle tires, and 24.04 % are from the abrasion of plastic household items. After emission, 60.21 % are removed by wastewater treatment plants. The overall proportion of microplastics that end up in the marine environment highly depends on the specific riverine retention rate of microplastics from vehicle tires. Including the high settling rate of these microplastics, this proportion drops from 9.96 % to 3.29 %, rendering vehicle tires a minor contributor to microplastic emissions into the China seas compared to other sources. Moreover, when using the density-dependent approach and considering the east/west dimension of each province, the microplastic emissions from vehicle tires into the China seas decrease from 71 % to 5.27 %. This underscores the urgent need for global and regional models to account for the detailed riverine transport process of microplastics from vehicle tires in order to enhance the accuracy of their emission estimates into coastal waters

    Rich Addiction

    Examining the author’s own experiences of narcotics addiction reveals certain aspects of the addicted mentality that have strong ethical valence. In general, this shows that addiction is not a state fundamentally characterized by lack. The rudiments of this position are found in some contemporary philosophy of addiction; also, it is contrasted with a common widely held mistaken view. Addiction should instead be understood in continuity with and as illuminating the nature of human personhood and subjectivity. Under a phenomenology specific to the author’s experience, addiction appears as a mode of experience that has an unmanageable overflow of narratives created as discourses concerning people, events, thoughts, and feelings; narratives embodied in assemblages of objects; and narratives appearing as mental images. These considerations suggest that pre-reflective connection to the world can be profoundly illuminative but also can isolate is from the world and, further, that our ethical values form from within our lives and not as an artificial addition. Our historical, narrative self-understanding has existential and moral import. Thus, addiction by its extremity exemplifies the ceaseless ethical activity of personhood

    A Qualitative Study on the Persistence of Seasoned Student Affairs Professionals

    The attrition of student affairs professionals has plagued higher education for decades and continues to negatively impact the profession. Over 40% of new student affairs professionals leave the field and leading contributors to this departure include unsustainable working norms, outdated and deficient job-related incentives, and burnout. Prior research focused primarily on why staff intend to leave and do leave student affairs, but little research has explored why professionals persist and successfully cultivate a long-term, sustainable career in student affairs. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of seasoned student affairs professionals who have persisted in the field and apply the construct of grit as a theoretical framework. Understanding why student affairs professionals persist better equips higher education to reduce attrition rates which in turn reduces disruptions to the academic mission, financial costs associated with staff turnover, and the perpetuation of operating under strained conditions leading to attrition. Through a basic qualitative study, 10 student affairs professionals representing various institution types from across the United States, were interviewed using a semi-structured protocol and surveyed to assess their level of grit and passion attainment. Participants of this study exhibited gritty behavior and were passionate about working in student affairs. External support structures like personal and professional relationships as well as work environments that encourage flexibility and autonomy combined with high levels of grit led to a sustainable career in student affairs

    Effect of Company-Driven Disability Diversity initiatives: A multi-case study across industries

    OBJECTIVE: In this article, we share insights emerging from case studies conducted across seven companies.We illustrate the motives, processes, and outcomes of these initiatives. METHODS: This study is built on the previously published case studies conducted across seven companies. We applied elements of consensual qualitative research (CQR) for the data collection and analyses before performing an in-depth qualitative content analysis using the data coded for each company, looking for commonalities and differences. RESULTS: Although practices differed, all companies experienced noted benefits. Committed leadership and complementary company values facilitated successful outcomes for initiatives. The strength or salience of disability-inclusive actions and practices appeared to moderate outcomes related to company performance, employee perceptions of the company, and cohesiveness. CONCLUSION: Company disability initiatives can yield positive impacts on company performance and culture. The practices we identified and their positive outcomes serve as beacons to other organizations that recognize disability as a valued part of company diversity

Despite its success in boxing, Boxnard has a negative reputation and is often referred to as a bad city. Boxing can change this. Boxing teaches us lessons that go beyond the ring. Boxing teaches us that we can fight negative stories with positive ones. We can tell counterstories as counterpunches to knock out false, negative portrayals about us. These counterstories as counterpunches can empower us and our communities.     Exploring Home Delivery Service Attributes: Sustainability Versus Delivery Expectations During the COVID-19 Pandemic

    Many consumers expect e-commerce home delivery to be sustainable and fast. To better understand the dilemma behind these requirements, we analyzed e-commerce players\u27 practices and assessed consumers\u27 preferences for home delivery using a mixed-methods approach. We used exploratory structured interviews with logistics and e-commerce companies to reveal their home delivery options, and a discrete choice experiment (DCE) with 400 consumers to identify their home delivery preferences. Our study provides new insights into consumer expectations and preferences regarding home delivery solutions offered by e-commerce companies. Our findings provide empirical evidence of consumer expectations regarding individualization, innovation, and sustainable service alternatives for home delivery. Our results indicate that delivery speed is the most desired home delivery attribute, followed by delivery options, reusable packaging, and delivery by electric delivery vehicles

    Mantle Sources and Geochemical Evolution of the Picture Gorge Basalt, Columbia River Basalt Group

    The Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG) is the youngest continental flood basalt province, proposed to be sourced from the deep-seated plume that currently resides underneath Yellowstone National Park. If so, the earliest erupted basalts from this province, such as those in the Picture Gorge Basalt (PGB), aid in understanding and modeling plume impingement and the subsequent evolution of basaltic volcanism. Using geochemical and isotopic data, this study explores potential mantle sources and magma evolution of the PGB. Long known geochemical signatures of the PGB include overall large ion lithophile element (LILE) enrichment and relative depletion of high field strength elements (HFSE) typical of other CRBG main-phase units. Basaltic samples of the PGB have 87Sr/86Sr ratios on the low end of the range displayed by other CRBG lavas and mantle-like δ18O values. The relatively strong enrichment of LILE and depletion of HFSE coupled with depleted isotopic signatures suggest a metasomatized upper mantle as the most likely magmatic source for the PGB. Previous geochemical modeling of the PGB utilized the composition of two high-MgO primitive dikes exposed in the northern portion of the Monument Dike swarm as parental melt. However, fractionation of these dike compositions cannot generate the compositional variability illustrated by basaltic lavas and dikes of the PGB. This study identifies a second potential parental PGB composition best represented by basaltic flows in the extended spatial distribution of the PGB. This composition also better reflects the lowest stratigraphic flows identified in the previously mapped extent of the PGB. Age data reveal that PGB lavas erupted first and throughout eruptions of main-phase CRBG units (Steens, Imnaha, Grande Ronde Basalt). Combining geochemical signals with these age data indicates cyclical patterns in the amounts of contributing mantle components. Eruption of PGB material occurred in two pulses, demonstrated by a ~0.4 Ma temporal gap in reported ages, 16.62 to 16.23 Ma. Coupling ages with observed geochemical signals, including relative elemental abundances of LILE, indicates increased influence of a more primitive, potentially plume-like source with time
