Searching for Authentic Cultural Engagement in the Classroom
Many teachers in the current public education system in the United States do not fully consider the unique societal and cultural aspects of African American and Latinx learners. As a result, many teachers could benefit from developing skills that strengthen their understanding of authentic engagement, cultural competency, and cultural congruency to aid in implementing culturally relevant and sustaining pedagogical practices that benefit the diverse learning styles of these students. Additionally, some African American/Black teachers have adopted a standalone Eurocentric approach to teaching that could further alienate and disenfranchise students of Color. To address these issues, I describe and explain the decisions and actions taken by an all-African American teaching staff at a school in North Carolina that educates a 100 percent minority student population. This autoethnographic study also highlights the cultural and academic challenges that many students face due to the shortage of teachers who understand and apply methods and approaches involving cultural competency, cultural congruency and authentic cultural engagement
The Water-Climate Nexus: Intersections Across Sectors
Water security and climate change are important priorities for communities and regions worldwide. The intersections between water and climate change extend across many environmental and human activities. This Primer is intended as an introduction, grounded in examples, for students and others considering the interactions between climate, water, and society. In this Primer, we summarize key intersections between water and climate across four sectors: environment; drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene; food and agriculture; and energy. We begin with an overview of the fundamental water dynamics within each of these four sectors, and then discuss how climate change is impacting water and society within and across these sectors. Emphasizing the relationships and interconnectedness between water and climate change can encourage systems thinking, which can show how activities in one sector may influence activities or outcomes in other sectors. We argue that to achieve a resilient and sustainable water future under climate change, proposed solutions must consider the water–climate nexus to ensure the interconnected roles of water across sectors are not overlooked. Toward that end, we offer an initial set of guiding questions that can be used to inform the development of more holistic climate solutions
Including Voices and Mitigating Bias: Evaluative Practices for Final Interviews
The chapter discusses the preparation of non-search committee members to participate in an interview process and provide feedback on candidates. Increasingly, as our institutions strive for more inclusive search processes, we are incorporating equitable hiring practices such as implicit bias training for search committee members, rubrics for evaluating candidate applications, and behavior-based interview questions. However, for final interviews, we often throw the door open for general evaluation of candidates by a broad group of people who agree to attend a meeting, presentation, or meal. The feedback we gain from these final interview events may truly be germane to the candidates’ ability to succeed in the position, or it may be about the candidate’s outfit or their choice to have a glass of wine with dinner. Planning structures that can support fair and thoughtful candidate feedback from a broad set of individuals can ensure that these individuals feel confident in their ability to contribute to the process and will ensure that the search committee has the appropriate feedback on which to base their decision
Stalemate at Port Arthur: William James on War, Vulnerability, and Pluralist Personalism
Using a close reading of a single clause and its context in a section in A Pluralist Universe, we see the moral dangers James saw in traditional ontology, in particular its relation to war and peace. This analysis opens up James’s combining the personalist philosophy of his friend Borden Bowne (and others) with the pluralism he developed late in his career. This leads, further, to reflection of James’s performative philosophizing. Finding in James a theory of “pluralistic personalism” gives us a fresh look at the far-reaching power of his basic concepts of moral philosophy
The Reddit Cannabis Subjective Highness Rating Scale: Applying Computational Social Science to Explore Psychological and Environmental Correlates of Naturalistic Cannabis Use
Social media data provide unprecedented access to discussions of active, naturalistic, and often real-time cannabis use in an era of cannabis policy liberalization. The aim of this study was to explore psychological and environmental correlates of cannabis effects by applying computational social science approaches to a large dataset of unprompted reports of naturalistic cannabis use with corresponding self-reported numerical ratings of subjective highness. Post title text was extracted via the Pushshift dataset from N = 328,865 posts to the r/trees Reddit community, where posters self-assess and disclose how high they feel on a scale from 1 to 10 (M = 6.9, SD = 1.8). Structural topic modelling and Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) dictionary-based approaches were applied to identify (1) frequently discussed topics and (2) text indicative of 5 psychological processes (affective, social, cognitive, perceptual, biological), respectively, as well as to examine relationships between subjective highness and (1) topic prevalence and (2) psychological process word counts. A 40-topic model was selected for interpretation based on semantic coherence and exclusivity. The most discussed topics in a 40-topic model were characterized by references to smoking places, social contexts, positive affect, cognitive states, as well as food and media consumed. In LIWC dictionary analyses, words mentioning affective, social, and cognitive processes were referenced more often than perceptual or body processes. Posters reported greater subjective highness when using language that referred to in-person social environments and lower subjective highness when using language that referred to online social environments and positive affect psychological states. This examination of unprompted online reports of naturalistic cannabis use identified textual content referring to affect and to other people as being associated with perceived effects of cannabis. These affective and social aspects of the cannabis use experience were salient to active posters in this online community and should be integrated into experience sampling methods and behavioral pharmacology research, as well as public health messaging
NICU Parent and Staff Advocacy to Address Parental Mental Health
Parents of infants requiring neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) hospitalization often experience increased rates of distress, trauma, and perinatal mood disorders. Untreated parental mental health conditions have short- and long-term effects for infants and families. While some NICUs provide varying degrees of mental health supports for NICU families, these services are not universally or systematically integrated in US NICUs. Multiple factors contribute to this gap in care, including mental health stigma, funding constraints, and lack of staff training and capacity. In an effort to address this gap, we used a participatory action research approach, guided by a Patient and Stakeholder Engagement model, to partner with graduate NICU parents and patient-facing NICU staff to identify parental mental health needs and ideas to address them. Double-Exponential-Probability-Distribution-Function and It\u27s Applications in Some Critical Aerospace Safety Problems: Perspective and Brief Review
Some critical microelectronics and photonics aerospace-safety and reliability-physics problems could be successfully addressed using a flexible and physically meaningful double-exponential-probability-distribution-function (DEPDF). It is the author\u27s belief that a successful outcome of an undertaking of importance cannot be achieved and assured, nor even considerably improved, if the effort is not quantified, and if, because of numerous uncertain-and-inevitable intervening influences, such a quantification is not done on a probabilistic basis. This is particularly true in various “human-in-the-loop” missions and extraordinary situations, when the reliability of the equipment/instrumentation, both its hard- and software, and the performance of the involved human(s) contribute jointly to the outcome of a mission or an off-normal situation. The acceptable never-zero probability of failure cannot be high, of course, but should not be lower than necessary either. It has to be adequate for a particular system, mission and application. Products that “never fail” are most likely more expensive than they could and should be. The general concepts are illustrated by practical examples. It is concluded that while some kind of predictive modeling should always precede any type of accelerated testing, analytical (“mathematical”) modeling, employed in this write-up, should complement, whenever possible, computer simulations: these two major modeling tools are based on different assumptions, use different calculation techniques, and if the results are in agreement, then there is a good reason to believe that the obtained information is sufficiently accurate and, hence, trustworthy. Future work should be focused on the experimental verification of the suggested DEPDF model and on new areas of its possible applications in aerospace safety tasks and problems and beyond
Path Instabilities and Drag in the Settling of Single spheres
The settling behavior of individual spheres in a quiescent fluid was studied experimentally. The dynamics of the spheres was analyzed in the parameter space of particle-to-fluid density ratio (Γ) and Galileo number (Ga), with Γ ∈ (1.1,7.9) and Ga ∈ (100,340). The experimental results showed for the first time that the mean trajectory angle with the vertical exhibits a complex behavior as Ga and Γ are varied. Numerically predicted regimes such as Vertical Periodic for low Γ values, and Planar Rotating for high Γ values were validated. In particular, for the denser spheres, a clear transition from planar to non-planar trajectories was observed, accompanied by the emergence of semi-helical trajectories corresponding to the Planar Rotating Regime. The spectra of trajectory oscillations were also quantified as a function of Ga, confirming the existence of oblique oscillating regimes at both low and high frequencies. The amplitudes of the perpendicular velocities in these regimes were also quantified and compared with numerical simulations in the literature. The terminal velocity and drag of the spheres were found to depend on the particle-to-fluid density ratio, and correlations between the drag coefficient and particle Reynolds number (Rep) as a function of Ga were established, allowing for the estimation of drag and settling velocity using Ga, a control parameter, rather than the response parameter Rep
Producing Knowledge Together: a participatory approach to synthesising research across a large‑scale collaboration in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health
Background
Despite that stakeholder participation in evidence synthesis could result in more useful outcomes, there are few examples of processes that actively involve them in synthesis work. Techniques are needed that engage diverse stakeholders as equal partners in knowledge co-production. The aims of this paper are to describe an innovative participatory process of synthesising a large body of academic research products and compare the findings of the participatory process against two traditional approaches to synthesis: a rapid review and a structured review. Methods
First, a rapid synthesis of all research outputs (n = 86) was conducted by researchers with in-depth knowledge of the collaboration’s research. Second, a team of researchers and service providers conducted a structured synthesis of seventy-eight peer-reviewed articles and reports generated by the collaboration. Fifty-five publications were brought forward for further synthesis in part three, a facilitated participatory synthesis. Finally, we explored the value added by the participatory method by comparing findings generated across the three synthesis approaches. Results
Twelve researchers and 11 service providers/policy partners—8 self-identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander—participated in two facilitated workshops (totalling 4 h). Workshop activities engaged participants in reviewing publication summaries, identifying key findings, and evoked review, discussion and refinement. The process explicitly linked experiential knowledge to citations of academic research, clearly connecting the two knowledge types. In comparing the findings generated across all three methods we found mostly consistencies; the few discrepancies did not contradict but gave deeper insights into statements created by the other methods. The participatory synthesis generated the most, detailed, and unique findings, and contextual insights about the relevance of the key messages for practice. Conclusion
The participatory synthesis engaged stakeholders with diverse backgrounds and skillsets in synthesising a large body of evidence in a relatively short time. The participatory approach produced findings comparable to traditional synthesis methods while extending knowledge and identifying lessons most relevant for the participants who, ultimately, are the end users of the research. This process will interest other large-scale research collaborations seeking to engage stakeholders in evidence synthesis
Using Disaster Surveys to Model Business Interruption
Business interruption after disasters is an important metric for community resilience planning because has both economic and social consequences. Each additional day that a business is nonoperational further compounds lost revenue, wages, and lack of access to goods and services needed for recovery. Therefore, the use of surveys has grown in the literature as a way to capture the diverse information needed for modeling business disaster outcomes. However, variable inclusion and measurement can vary widely across studies, and there is a lack of guidance on how to structure surveys most effectively to facilitate this effort. This study fills these gaps through an analysis of variable choice, variable measurement, and measurement timing using data from an interdisciplinary field study in Lumberton, North Carolina after 2016 Hurricane Matthew. We found that empirical business interruption models can be improved significantly by using a comprehensive set of utility and damage variables; integrating damage information based on damage states for building, contents, and machinery; and capturing recovery-time dynamics by using business downtime and utility outage durations, rather than binary measurements. The results suggest that making these relatively small changes to survey design in future studies can yield large returns in empirical business models for community resilience research
