    Liquefaction-Induced Ground and Building Interactions in İskenderun from the 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquake Sequence

    Significant and widespread liquefaction occurred in İskenderun during the 2023 moment magnitude (Mw) 7.8 Kahramanmaraş earthquake. Liquefaction effects on buildings were observed in several areas of İskenderun, predominantly in areas of reclaimed land and near historic shorelines. Liquefaction-induced building settlements were particularly concentrated in the Çay District, which is almost entirely reclaimed land. Liquefaction-induced ground and building settlements were either marginal or not apparent in areas away from the historical shorelines. Building settlement and ground deformation were documented at 26 buildings in İskenderun through lidar scans and laser-level hand measurements. Liquefaction-induced building settlements ranged from 0 to 740 mm. Building-ground interactions were evident from hogging ground deformations, including cases where buildings deformed nearby ground and damaged nearby buildings, and sagging buildings. Historic land development affected the spatial extent of observed liquefaction-induced building damage. Representative liquefaction-induced building settlement and building interaction case histories are discussed and key insights are shared

    Bending Moral Philosophy and Philosophy of History Toward Each Other

    In lieu of an abstract, here is an excerpt from the introduction: In his journal of intimate thoughts (called The Inward Morning) written while journeying through the wildernesses of Montana, the American existentialist philosopher Henry Bugbee (1915–1999)—who had fled there from the Harvard Philosophy Department and who remains little known even in the U.S.—wrote: “Reflection, it seems, must earn the gift of the essential meaning of things past.” I think this is true, that the past is both exemplar of moral reflection and part of the substance of it. I have written a book to argue for the how and why of this truth, called Power and Compassion: On Moral Force Ethics and Historical Change. After it completes its adventures in peer review, it will be published by Amsterdam University Press late this year or early in 2025. My talk today will, I hope, give you a glimpse of the case I make for bending philosophy of history and moral philosophy toward each other. The wilderness of the past is meaningful to us only because it is the site of moral reflection. In introducing my book, I will follow a different line of exposition from that in the book itself. I must add here that in doing so just within my fifteen or twenty minutes I shall not list the thinkers who have influenced this development; but, in addition to those of the past and present, some of them also are in this room and at this conference.     Artificial Neural Network-Based Modelling for Yield Strength Prediction of Austenitic Stainless-Steel Welds

    This study aimed to develop an artificial neural network (ANN) model for predicting the yield strength of a weld metal composed of austenitic stainless steel and compare its performance with that of conventional multiple regression and machine learning models. The input parameters included the chemical composition of the nine effective elements (C, Si, Mn, P, S, Ni, Cr, Mo, and Cu) and the heat input per unit length. The ANN model (comprising five nodes in one hidden layer), which was constructed and trained using 60 data points, yielded an R2 value of 0.94 and a mean average percent error (MAPE) of 2.29%. During model verification, the ANN model exhibited superior prediction performance compared with the multiple regression and machine learning models, achieving an R2 value of 0.8644 and a MAPE of 3.06%. Consequently, the ANN model effectively predicted the variation in the yield strength and microstructure resulting from the thermal history and dilution during the welding of 3.5–9% Ni steels with stainless steel-based welding consumables. Furthermore, the application of the prediction model was demonstrated in the design of welding consumables and heat input for 9% Ni steel

    Under The Influence Of Parents: A Longitudinal Study Of Children’s Walking

    Researchers have studied children\u27s active travel; however, they have mostly been cross-sectional studies dealing with commuting to school and parental attitudes. To find ways to promote children\u27s active travel, this longitudinal study uses panel data (two time periods) to examine how parents\u27 actual walking and safety perception correlated with children’s walking. Using data from 240 children aged 4-16 and their parents in Portland, Oregon, we estimated a cross-lagged panel model (CLPM) to analyze the continuous relationships. We found that parents with more positive attitudes toward their walking walked more, and their children also walked more in both periods. In addition, parents\u27 perceptions of safety regarding their children\u27s walking environment in terms of strangers and traffic significantly affected children\u27s walking. Children’s safety perception and time-related perceived behavior control affected their attitude toward walking but not walking time. Moreover, previous children’s walking behavior can alleviate the subsequent negative perception of the time barrier of walking. This study is meaningful in finding the relationships between the attitudes and behaviors of parents’ and children\u27s walking based on repeated observations. Given our results, neighborhoods that are good for parents to walk in affect children’s walking. Parental walking needs to precede for encouraging continuous children’s walking

    The Cultivation of Ulva Lactuca in Jambiani, Zanzibar: A Case Study

    This case study explores the feasibility of Ulva lactuca cultivation in Jambiani, Zanzibar, Tanzania. The seaweed farming industry in Zanzibar is facing challenges related to climate change that have resulted in increased rates of crop failure and decreased production. Cultivation of the green algae Ulva lactuca has been suggested as a potential solution due to its tolerance to extreme environmental conditions. In collaboration with Marine Cultures, this project has tested different cultivation methods typically used for red algae (Rhodophyta) species. Experimental plots of Ulva lactuca were established in Jambiani, Zanzibar using the floating line and off- bottom methods. At the floating line plot, four different attachment methods were used to secure the seedlings to the lines. Tie tie and tubular netting were the most practical methods when considering the specific growth rates, percent seedling loss, and accessibility of materials. Plot location did not have a drastic effect on cultivation success, which offers flexibility for farmers with varying resources and needs. This study is significant to the local communities whose livelihoods depend on the marine environment and shows that there are avenues for the continued success of the seaweed farming industry in Zanzibar, Tanzania

A DERMS is used by an aggregator to dispatch large numbers of DERs in order to provide grid services to a Grid Operator. The ME addresses scalability issues inherent to Hardware-in-the-Loop DERMS simulation; a large number of assets are needed in order to observe effects on the grid from deployment and dispatch of DERs

    DFT based predictive model for BODIPY triplet quantum yields

    Triplet photosensitizers have been developed for use in a variety of applications such as photodynamic therapy, photocatalysis, and organic LEDs. All of these require a high triplet excited-state quantum yield, which is often measured as the singlet oxygen quantum yield (ФΔ). A common method to increase ФΔ is through the heavy-atom-effect achieved by the addition of heavy-atoms to the chromophore – such as the heavy halogens bromine and iodine. Previously, our group developed an empirical model using DFT to predict the ФΔ of heavy-atom containing chromophores. The model correlates a natural atomic orbital composition calculation of the heavy-atoms to the ФΔ of a chromophore. Herein, we modify the original model to apply specifically to halogenated boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes. In addition to developing a method to predict how changes in the structure of BODIPY dyes affects the ФΔ, this model provides insight into why different structural changes have differing impacts to the ФΔ. The BODIPY core has several unique substitution positions that can be halogenated; however, the model indicates that the 2- and 6-positions on BODIPY (IUPAC numbering) have the greatest impact on the ФΔ with yields changing from 0.00 to 0.90 when replacing the two protons with iodides. Although the original model made using xanthene type dyes provided reasonably good agreement with BODIPY dyes, the new reparametrized model allows for more accurate prediction of the ФΔ of BODIPY type chromophores and provides insight in the importance of substituent location to guide future chromophore design

    An Assessment of Equity, Compounding Disasters, and Climate Change in Hazard Mitigation Planning for the Portland Metro Region

    Hazard mitigation plans (HMPs) are strategic documents or policies developed by governments, communities, and organizations to identify risks and reduce the impacts of natural and human- made hazards. These plans aim to minimize loss of life, property damage, and disruption from floods, wildfires, snowstorms, heatwaves, and other disasters. While useful, these plans infrequently and unevenly address the lived experiences of marginalized populations who bear the disproportionate impacts of recurrent disasters. Technocratic planning goals exacerbate these impacts by failing to center inclusive and equity-focused approaches, thus eroding the resilience capacities of many vulnerable groups including the poor and communities of color. In this paper, I use content analysis to understand how HMPs in the Portland Metro region address multi-hazard scenarios, climate change, equity, and social vulnerability. For comparison, I perform a similar analysis on local climate action plans and policies authored by community advocacy groups. A political economy framework is employed to interrogate if and how these different plans are working to disrupt or reinforce structural inequalities within a disaster management context. Findings revealed cascading disasters, social vulnerability, climate change and equity were inadequately addressed by HMPs. Only CAPs robustly acknowledged the role of climate change in present and near future disaster trends, discussed the interdependencies between extreme weather hazards, and offered strategies for achieving equitable disaster management outcomes. This study highlights the need for greater communication between disaster management experts, climate scientists, and community residents to produce equitable DDR strategies that not only dismantle the structural inequalities responsible for social vulnerability but also account for the overlapping and compounding nature of extreme weather events

    Transgender Lived Experience in Social Work: A Critical Discourse Analysis

    To date, social work literature regarding transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals situates TGD individuals as objects of social work knowledge and intervention. While this existent work represents an important foundation, it may foreclose other positionalities for TGD individuals. Therefore, this feminist critical discourse analysis of social work literature utilizes professionalization and transnormativity as conceptual anchors to explore the phenomenon of “transgender lived experience” in social work literature in order to understand both the nature of transgender lived experience and who is permitted to have it. Ultimately, this project found that transgender lived experience within social work is a totalizing discourse centered on a wholly painful experience of othering that can only be ameliorated through medical intervention. While this experience can confer expertise upon some individuals, transnormativity and professionalization operate in concert with this discourse to situate TGD people as transgender in the first place, foreclosing any other subjectivity. Therefore, future inquiry into the experiences of TGD individuals in social work must be willing to embrace epistemic perspectives and methodologies that emphasize the nuance and diversity of individuals’ experiences and resist totalizing grand narratives
