    A peek behind the veil of the intermediary status of porn platforms : the atypical nature of porn content creators’ employment in the UK

    This chapter examines the extent to which the self-classification of porn platforms as mere intermediaries poses a hindrance to the empowerment of porn content creators (PCCs) based in the United Kingdom, with a particular focus on the perspective of labour law. The argument in this analysis draws upon a UK doctrinal examination of agency work to contend that PCCs should not be categorically grouped with agency workers, as this classification would entail the allocation of employer-like responsibilities for their clients. This investigation employs a triangulated approach that combines an evaluation of the terms of use of a selected sample of porn platforms with insights gathered from nine semi-structured interviews with PCCs. Despite the self-employed classification asserted by PCCs, the research underscores the pervasive influence and control exerted by online platforms over their work. In alignment with European Union (EU) initiatives aimed at enhancing the working conditions of platform work and taking inspiration from the UK Supreme Court decision regarding Uber drivers, I maintain that PCCs are subject to the power of porn platforms

    Relative predictive power of the autonomy versus the approach/avoidance dimension for psychological functioning at work and environmentalism

    This study analyses the relative predictive power of autonomous motivation and approach/avoidance motivation for people’s positive psychological functioning at work and environmentalism. It employs a longitudinal design (N =139). Multiple and hierarchical regression analyses show that the approach/avoidance dimension is more suitable to predict Affect Balance at work, whereas the autonomy dimension is more suitable to predict environmentalism. Theoretically, this can be explained with the approach/avoidance dimension being more aligned with the pleasure/pain principle and therefore more relevant for affective outcome variables. Autonomous motivation focuses more strongly on the alignment of a person’s actions with their values and interests. Hence, the autonomy dimension is more suitable for predicting environmentalism. This is because, behaving environmentally friendly is often not pleasurable but requires mature, disciplined self-choices. Implications for theory and practice are discussed

    Colonial policing practices in Queensland and their contemporary legacies

    This paper examines the policing of marginalised groups in colonial Australia, and the legacies of these practices. While scholars have recognised that police officers were at the forefront of the creation of a new social order in the Australian colonies, there have been limited analyses of how officers negotiated their roles and operated in practice within the communities that they policed. Focusing on Queensland, this article examines the ‘suspect communities’ who were heavily monitored and criminalised by police: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and non-European immigrant groups, primarily from China and Pacific Islands. It draws mainly on the evidence provided by the Queensland Police Gazette of policing practices and arrests, alongside parliamentary reports and relevant newspaper reports on policing, to reveal how policing operated on the ground. The decisions taken by police officers to suspect and apprehend individuals from these ‘suspect communities’ in significant numbers shaped and perpetuated wider societal stereotypes of criminality. These policing practices have significant and ongoing legacies in the Australian context for Indigenous Australians and non-European immigrant groups. The targeted policing practices and criminalisation examined here have ongoing intergenerational impacts on marginalised communities, and contemporary neocolonial policing practices continue to perpetuate these patterns. Reflecting on the connections between the historical and the contemporary, this article shows that we need to fully understand colonial and historical policing practices to begin to unpick problematic and deep-rooted contemporary police stereotyping

    Doing time in old age : unsettling ethics in carceral circuits

    Since the early 2000s, the proportion of older adults in Japanese penal institutions has risen dramatically, driven largely by high rates of recidivism. This trend has developed alongside growing social insecurity about crime, as well as anxiety about old age and care in a time of increasing neoliberal discourses of individualized risk and responsibility for maintaining health. This article examines the temporal dimensions of these changes and their implications for socially marginalized and criminalized older adults. Starting from Allison's concept of 'dis-belonging' (muen) as being out of time with others, I describe how old age inequalities of belonging are produced by chronocratic regimes, and how heterochrony emerges within the contradictions of those regimes. I argue that as old age becomes increasingly subject to chronocratic violence, new rhythms of doing and being time's body are emerging. Drawing on fieldwork in the impoverished area of San'ya, Tokyo, I show how aging is produced through rhythms of recidivism that entail both agency and possibilities for care. Older men in San'ya see carceral circulation as a way of striving for a good life in what they call 'shaba,' or the world of suffering and endurance, and a way of making time of ethical potential in old age

    Evolutionary fault localization based on the diversity of suspiciousness values

    Context. Fault localization (FL) is a software lifecycle activity and its automation is a challenge for researchers and practitioners. Method. The study focuses on evolutionary fault localization and introduces a novel Genetic Programming (GP) approach that evolves FL heuristics based on the diversity of the suspiciousness score of program statements – a score to grade how faulty a statement is. Experimental analysis. The approach was evaluated against baselines, which include the canonical GP, in benchmarks with real programs and real faults. Conclusion. The results showed the competitiveness of the approach through evaluation metrics commonly used in the research field

    Six early CPAP-usage behavioural patterns determine peak CPAP adherence and permit tailored intervention, in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea

    Background. High rates of non-adherence to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in obstructive sleep apnoea hamper good clinical outcomes. Current recommendations assumes two behaviours (adherence and non-adherence) and days 7–90 follow-up post-CPAP initiation mitigates against non-adherence. Objectives. To investigate associations between early CPAP-usage behaviours and (1) CPAP adherence at month 3 of treatment and (2) sleep centres’ treatment pathways (the procedures patients undergo that may affect barriers or facilitators of CPAP adherence). Methods. We conducted growth mixture modelling (GMM) on retrospective data from 1000 patients at 5 UK sleep centres. Night 1 to month 3 telemonitored CPAP-usage data were downloaded from 200 patients per centre who started CPAP in 2019 (100) or 2020 (100). Adherence was defined using accepted criteria (mean CPAP-usage ≥4 hours/night for ≥70% of nights). Results. GMM identified six distinct CPAP-usage behaviour patterns over month 1. In four (54% of patients), CPAP-usage increased or decreased, in two (remaining 46%), CPAP-usage/non-usage was consistent. 62% of the cohort were non-adherent by month 3, despite pathways following current recommendations. 98% of patients who were non-adherent by month 3 were already non-adherent by month 1. Regression analysis with a separate dataset demonstrated that early CPAP-usage behaviour explained 86% of the variance in CPAP non-adherence at month 3. Conclusions. These data, supported by previous work, indicate that recommended day 30–90 follow-up is too late to prevent CPAP non-adherence. Determining CPAP-usage behavioural pattern in week 2 identifies risk of CPAP non-adherence at month 3 and permits the possibility of tailored interventions

    Investigating the Contribution of Morphological Divergence to Behavior Using Artificial Intelligence

    Despite being closely related in evolutionary time (less than 250 kya), the three species of the Drosophila simulans complex already exhibit striking differences in male genital morphology. Evidence from experimental evolution and genital manipulation suggests that sexual selection drives the fast evolution of male genital morphology in this species group. Therefore, these Drosophila species are an excellent system for investigating the genetic bases of sexually selected traits within species and their contribution to reproductive isolation between species. The external male genitalia of Drosophila comprise the anal plates (cerci), the epandrial posterior lobes, and the claspers (surstyli), all of which have been shown from previous studies to play an essential role during mating. Previously in our lab, two genes, tartan and sox21b, have been found to contribute to the divergence in clasper and posterior lobes’ morphology, respectively, between D. simulans and D. mauritiana. In addition, tartan has also been shown to contribute to female vaginal plate width differences between these two species. Here, we investigate the effects of these morphological changes on reproductive fitness. This is achieved by conducting a series of high-throughput mating behavioural assays using reciprocal hemizygote files generated in our lab that are genetically identical other than containing a working allele of either D. simulans or D. mauritiana of tartan or Sox21b and applying AI techniques (temporal action detection) to automatically track and quantify interpretable and quantitative measures of mating behaviour such as courtship latency, copulation latency, and copulation duration
