An integrative review to examine the care pathways and support available for individuals diagnosed with lung cancer who have never smoked
As the proportion of people diagnosed with lung cancer who have never smoked rises, it is important to understand how their experiences differ from those of smokers. A better understanding of their experiences, views, and informational and supportive care needs is essential to ensuring an optimised patient-centred care pathway leading to improvements in patient satisfaction, quality of life, and treatment outcomes. This integrative review of the international literature identified 5866 articles by searching four academic databases, the grey literature, and hand-searching the reference lists of relevant systematic reviews. After screening, ten studies were selected for inclusion in the review. Thematic analysis identified five themes that spoke to the experiences of never smokers with lung cancer: stigma, awareness, diagnosis, the emotional response, and support. Stigma pervades, with potentially significant psychological and social consequences, negatively affecting patients emotionally and potentially delaying their diagnosis. Increasing awareness amongst healthcare professionals and the general public has the potential to reduce stigma and encourage earlier diagnosis. Support specifically tailored for never smokers with lung cancer can improve individuals’ experiences of care. The experiences of never smokers with lung cancer are unique, and more research is required to better tailor support and guidance for this cohort

Design of hot-tearing resistant and thermally stable aluminium alloys for advanced casting technologies
Aluminium alloys are cost-effective and lightweight materials that are widely used in the transport industry, where cost and weight are key considerations for material selection. Operating at elevated temperatures (T ≥ 0.5Tm, where Tm is the absolute melting temperature of Al) is known to be a weakness of these alloys. A new methodology is proposed to design Al alloys with improved thermal stability and reduced cracking susceptibility using both theoretical and experimental techniques. In this work, two new alloys based on the Al-Ce-Fe-Mn-Ni system were developed. To minimise hot tearing, compositions with a narrow freezing range during the final stage of solidification were selected. Thermal contraction upon solidification was then experimentally determined as a measure of hot tearing susceptibility, and compositions with low thermal strain accumulation were identified. Following exhaustive screening, the solidification behaviour was further investigated by examining the microstructural morphologies under different cooling rates, followed by mechanical testing. Results showed that a high proportion of the strength (75 to 80 %) was retained after tensile testing at 300 °C. The methodology can be applied to designing Al alloys for both casting and additive manufacturing applications
Synchronized acoustic emission and high-speed imaging of cavitation-induced atomization : the role of shock waves
This study experimentally investigates the role of cavitation-induced shock waves in initiating and destabilizing capillary (surface) waves on a droplet surface, preceding atomization. Acoustic emissions and interfacial wave dynamics were simultaneously monitored in droplets of different liquids (water, isopropyl alcohol and glycerol), using a calibrated fiber-optic hydrophone and high-speed imaging. Spectral analysis of the hydrophone data revealed distinct subharmonic frequency peaks in the acoustic spectrum correlated with the wavelength of capillary waves, which were optically captured during the onset of atomization from the repetitive imploding bubbles. This finding provides the first direct evidence that the wavelength of the growing surface waves, which governs capillary instability resulting in droplet breakup, is linked to the periodicity of shock waves responsible for the onset of the subharmonic frequencies detected in the acoustic spectra. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of ultrasonic atomization, signifying the role of cavitation and shock waves in the atomization process
Quantifying illegal rosewood trade, seizures and forestry law enforcement in Indonesia
Patterns of illicit trafficking networks can be explained by economic, geographic and environmental factors, and has clear implications for forest management. Rosewood is one of the most valuable taxa in the illegal wildlife trade. We focus on its illegal trade in Indonesia. Here, rosewood is not a protected species, but logging is prohibited in protected areas, logging and transportation of rosewood requires permits, and its international trade is subject to CITES regulations. Using seizure data from 2021 to 2023, we test factors explaining seizure patterns at regency level and conduct a baseline analysis of those arrested and the arresting authorities. Seizures (46, for a total of 4302 logs) occurred throughout southern Indonesia, and seizure activity remained constant over time. Regency size, human population, and purchasing power did not correlate with seizure data, but seizures were positively related to the absolute amount and the percentage of forest present in regencies. A third of logs seized came from state-managed or protected forests. Seizures were carried out by the police (23% in collaboration with other authorities; mean seizure of 85 logs), by forestry officers (45% collaboration; mean 138 logs) and by the army (83% collaboration; mean 245 logs). Violation of forestry and job creation laws, and lack of transport documents were the main reasons for arrests. Number of suspects arrested was unrelated to number of logs seized. Successful prosecution was documented for 21–28% of cases, with an average sentencing of 2 years imprisonment and fines of US$29,000. We show that seizure data can be used to provide a first quantitative assessment of rosewood criminal networks and how this links to forest presence and management. While the end destination for much of Indonesia's rosewood is China, our results support the argument that the rosewood trade network in Indonesia is domestically organized rather than internationally orchestrated, and solutions have to be found within Indonesia's forestry policies and regulations
Understanding the interpersonal dynamics between parents and coaches in youth tennis
Interpersonal relationships between athletes and their parents and coaches is an important factor in the success of youth sport programmes. Despite growing evidence in the parent-coach stress literature, there remains a lack of research which investigates parent-coach relationships. Therefore, a three-part research series was conducted to better understand how these relationships function within the parent-athlete-coach (PAC) triad in youth tennis. Study one employed a collective case study design and utilised pre-interview tasks, semi-structured interviews and conversational threads to collect data from nine PAC triads in three developmental stages. Study two surveyed 284 tennis parents to examine how the responsiveness and quality of parent-coach relationships mediated the association between four behavioural characteristics and parents’ basic psychological needs satisfaction (BPNS) in the PAC triad. Finally, a five-phase action research study with three PAC triads was conducted to investigate how parent-coach relationships can be improved. Collectively, the findings highlighted the importance of specific parent-coach relationship qualities and behaviours within the functioning of the triad and stakeholders’ experiences in youth tennis. Recommendations for practice are provided in relation to these findings
Climate change and investors’ behaviour : assessing a new type of systematic risk
This study explores how temperature anomalies, a novel form of systematic risk, affect financial
markets, expanding the traditional understanding of market-wide risks. While climate change is
becoming an important consideration, the extent to which temperature anomalies disrupt economic
activities and influence stock returns is urgently needed to assess. Using data from 479 Thai
companies (2010-2023), we apply linear and nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL)
models to examine the impact of temperature anomalies and investor sentiment on stock returns.
Our findings reveal that (1) temperature anomalies significantly affect short-term stock returns,
especially when prioritising sustainability and environmental, social, and governance (ESG)
factors; (2) public awareness, measured by Google Search Volume Index (GSVI), has a complex,
nonlinear impact on the stock market; (3) temperature anomalies act like traditional risk measures,
influencing stock returns similarly to market volatility. The study highlights the growing
importance of climate change in financial decision-making and offers insights into investor
reactions to climate risks and economic sentiment. It emphasises the need to consider short-term
market reactions to climate-related news and suggests that temperature anomalies could be viewed as a systematic risk in financial markets

Expert-led narratives in the planning industry often make assumptions about how heritage is defined and overlook the community’s heritage values and place identity in decision-making.
Within this context, the research question asks, ‘how does adaptive reuse of heritage buildings impact the perceived value and place identity within the community? The case of the Tunbridge Wells Opera House.’
This study explores how adaptively reusing the Tunbridge Wells Opera House as a JD Wetherspoon pub impacts its perceived value and identity within the community. It examines whether changes to the heritage building aligns with community values and whether alternative uses could enhance the value.
A case study approach is used to allow for an in-depth and context-specific analysis of heritage values and place identity. A qualitative approach, using questionnaires, will be the primary method for gathering community views, as well as a group interview with Tunbridge Wells Civic Society. Data will be analysed against the conceptual framework developed from the literature review.
Views on the adaptive reuse of the Tunbridge Wells Opera House are expected to vary, with some appreciating the preservation and new function of the building, while others may feel that the new use undermines its historical and cultural value. Older generations, who have experienced the change of the Opera House over time, are likely to be more critical.
The research concludes with evidence and recommendations for policy and decision-makers to guide future adaptive reuse projects to align with community heritage values and place identity
