Archaeology, chronology, and sedimentological context of the youngest Middle Palaeolithic assemblage from Jebel Faya, United Arab Emirates
Due to the scarcity of stratified and well-dated archaeological horizons, diachronic as well as spatial patterns of Pleistocene lithic traditions are not very well understood in Arabia. To contribute to this topic, we present new archaeological, sedimentological and chronological data from archaeological horizon II (AH II), the stratigraphically youngest Middle Palaeolithic assemblage at Jebel Faya, Emirate of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Results of optically stimulated luminescence dating reveal that AH II was deposited about 80 ka ago at the end of Marine Isotope Stage 5 (MIS 5). The lithic assemblage shows a preference for elongated flakes and blades produced predominantly by bidirectional methods, both Levallois and non-Levallois. The few tools feature simple retouch often forming denticulated edges. Contemporaneous assemblages from Arabia are rare and show distinct technological characteristics, including a preference for the production of flakes with ovoid and triangular morphologies from centripetal as well as unidirectional convergent and bidirectional convergent Levallois methods. These differences indicate that traditions in the production of stone tool blanks follow distinct trajectories north and south of the Rub al-Khali desert at the termination of the MIS 5 humid period
'Just pull a Bardot' : subtitling French cultural references in ‘Call my agent’
The translation of cultural references has taken centre stage in translation studies in the last few decades, particularly since the cultural turn observed in translation studies from the 1980s onwards. With the emergence of audiovisual translation (AVT) as an increasingly important subfield of translation studies, new tailored typologies of cultural references and corresponding translation strategies started appearing at the turn of the century. This paper investigates the interplay between the multiple sets of challenges faced by interlingual subtitlers dealing with source texts where cultural references abound, through a case study of the subtitles in English and Spanish of the French series Call My Agent (Dix pour cent).
Relying primarily on Newmark’s classification of culture-specific items (CSIs, 1988) and Pedersen’s typology of translation strategies for extralinguistic cultural references (ECRs, 2011), I provide a contrastive overview of the strategies used for the translation of cultural references in both languages. The results obtained show that foreignisation prevails in both English and Spanish, and that French cultural references with high cultural significance (e.g. cuisine, fashion and cinema) are more likely to be foreignised

The deep evolutionary roots of the nervous system
The evolutionary success of animals can, at least in part, be attributed to the presence of neurons that allow long-distance communication between tissues, coordination of movements, and the capacity for learning. However, the evolutionary origin and relationship of neurons to other cell types are fundamental questions that remain unsolved. The first neurons probably evolved shortly after the rise of the first animals over 600 million years ago. Studies on early-diverging animal lineages have provided key insights into the mechanisms underlying the origin of neurons. Recent discoveries in morphology, molecular signatures, and function of neurons in cnidarians and comb jellies, as well as neuron-like cells in nerveless placozoans, sponges, and other eukaryotes, may prompt a redefinition of what constitutes a neuron. Here we review the latest insights into the origin of neurons and nervous systems, while also highlighting exciting technological advancements that not only are accelerating our understanding of nervous system evolution, morphology, and function but also hold the potential to revolutionize the field

Is Avocado Beneficial for Lipid Profiles? An Umbrella Review of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses
Background and aims: Avocado is rich in monounsaturated fats, fiber, and phytochemicals and has been linked to favorable lipid and cardiometabolic outcomes. This review synthesized evidence from systematic reviews and meta-analyses on avocado consumption and its effects on cardiovascular risk factors.
Methods: A systematic search was conducted in EMBASE, MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library for reviews published up to June 2024. Eligible studies examined the impact of avocado on lipid profiles, including total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c). Study quality was assessed using PRISMA 2020, AMSTAR 2, and GRADE.
Results: Eight reviews met inclusion criteria. In individuals with dyslipidemia, avocado intake was associated with reductions in LDL-c (-9.4 to -17 mg/dL) and TC. Effects on HDL-c and TG (30–500 g/day) were inconsistent. Modest improvements in blood pressure were observed in hypertensive individuals. Among overweight and diabetic populations, reductions in fasting insulin and HbA1c were reported, with no significant changes in fasting glucose or BMI.
Conclusion: Avocado intake may benefit individuals with dyslipidemia by lowering LDL-c and TC. However, inconsistent findings for HDL-c and TG and methodological limitations highlight the need for standardized, long-term trials
Investigating the Impact of Structural Features on F1 Car Diffuser Performance Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
This study utilizes Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to optimize the aerodynamic performance of a Formula 1 (F1) car diffuser, investigating the effects of vane placements, end-flap positions, and other structural modifications. Diffusers are critical in managing airflow, enhancing downforce, and reducing drag, directly influencing vehicle stability and speed. Despite ongoing advancements, the interaction between diffuser designs and turbulent flow dynamics requires further exploration. A Three-Dimensional k-Omega-SST RANS-based CFD methodology was developed to evaluate the aerodynamic performance of various diffuser configurations using Star CCM+. The findings reveal that adding lateral vane parallel to the divergence section improved high-intensity fluid flow distribution within the main channel, achieving 13.49% increment in downforce and 5.58% reduction in drag compared to the baseline simulation. However, incorporating an airfoil cross-section flap parallel to the divergence end significantly enhances the car’s performance, leading to a substantial improvement in downforce while relatively small increase in drag force. This underscores the critical importance of precise flap positioning for optimizing aerodynamic efficiency. Additionally, the influence of adding flaps underneath the divergence section was also analyzed to manipulate boundary layer separation to achieve improved performance by producing additional downforce. This research emphasizes the critical role of vortex management in preventing flow detachment and improving diffuser efficiency. The findings offer valuable insights for potential FIA F1 2023 undertray regulation changes, with implications for faster lap times and heightened competitiveness in motorsports
Traversing the multiple nested geographies of NUTs based entrepreneurial ecosystems
Entrepreneurial Ecosystems (EEs) have quickly become a key lens for exploring regional entrepreneurial phenomena. Thus far there appears little consensus around the most relevant geographical unit of analysis for examining EEs however, both from a theoretical and an empirical perspective. In this paper, we set out to test whether wider EE geographical units (such as UK regions) have any meaningful relevance to the small firms and their business operations. To address this concern this paper undertakes an empirical analysis of a loan guarantee scheme in the UK, the Recovery Loan Scheme (RLS). Through the empirical lens of the UK SME support scheme, the RLS, we test the relevance of different levels of EE geographical units including NUTS 1, NUTS 2 and NUTS 3. In the case of the UK, which is a diverse collection of nations (England, and three devolved nations, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland), we found that the three devolved nations, and also London shows much larger and stronger higher order spatial effects on their lower order constituent spatial levels. This suggests that outside of London, and the devolved nations, simply analysing NUTS 1 regions does not appear to be the appropriate level if we want to understand the inherent spatial dynamics of small firm ecosystems. Rather, we need to go to smaller spatial levels to establish the true nature of the ecosystem relevant to the small firm. The policy implications point toward the need for properly tailored and localised policy formulation
