    Virtual reality as a support tool in physical education: an experiment in elementary school

    Esta dissertação foi elaborada como parte dos requisitos para obtenção do título de Mestre em Educação Física pelo programa de Mestrado Profissional em Educação Física em Rede (ProEF). Os objetivos deste trabalho são i) analisar o uso da Realidade Virtual como recurso de apoio pedagógico às aulas de Educação Física, ii) identificar a realidade escolar sobre o uso de ferramentas digitais e tecnológicas; iii) compreender como o aluno interage com a tecnologia de RV; e iv) analisar se o uso de uma proposta de aula de atletismo no formato digital, com o uso da Realidade Virtual, possibilita o engajamento e participação dos alunos; e iv) construir os recursos necessários para esta análise, sendo eles um aplicativo para celular e um site de apoio. A pesquisa foi realizada com 42 estudantes do 5º ano do Ensino Fundamental de duas escolas públicas de Jundiaí/SP. A metodologia adotada envolveu a realização de uma revisão de literatura, o desenvolvimento do aplicativo AtletismoRV, e sua utilização como parte de um plano de aulas estruturado em quatro etapas, incluindo o uso de óculos de papelão e vídeos imersivos. A análise qualitativa dos dados revelou que a RV aumentou o engajamento dos alunos, facilitou a compreensão dos conteúdos e promoveu a inclusão digital e educacional. O aplicativo proporcionou uma experiência imersiva e atrativa, mitigando limitações estruturais comuns no ensino de atletismo em escolas públicas. Como recurso educacional, foi elaborado um procedimento replicável de uso da RV nas aulas de Educação Física. O projeto foi reconhecido com prêmios em eventos acadêmicos nacionais e internacionais, destacando sua relevância pedagógica e inovação.This dissertation was developed as part of the requirements for obtaining a Master’s degree in Physical Education through the ProEF program. The objectives of this study are to: (i) analyze the use of Virtual Reality (VR) as a pedagogical support tool in Physical Education classes; (ii) identify the current state of digital and technological tool usage within schools; (iii) understand how students interact with VR technology; (iv) assess whether a digitally formatted athletics lesson using VR promotes student engagement and participation; and (v) develop the necessary resources for this analysis, namely a mobile application and a supporting website. The research was conducted with 42 fifthgrade students from two public elementary schools in Jundiaí, São Paulo, Brazil. The methodology included a literature review, the evelopment of the “AtletismoRV” mobile application, and its implementation within a four-stage lesson plan that incorporated cardboard VR glasses and immersive videos. Qualitative data analysis revealed that VR increased student engagement, enhanced content comprehension, and fostered digital and educational inclusion. The application provided an immersive and appealing experience, helping to overcome structural limitations commonly encountered in teaching athletics in public schools. As an educational resource, a replicable procedure for using VR in Physical Education classes was developed. The project received awards at national and international academic events, underscoring its pedagogical relevance and innovative character

    Scientific discourse/scientific dissemination discourse: boundary and constitution relations in university students podcasts

    Na associação entre Novos Estudos de Letramento e Análise do Discurso, esta pesquisa em nível de Mestrado tem como objetivo investigar relações de fronteira e constituição entre discurso científico e discurso da divulgação científica no processo de produção de roteiros de podcast de divulgação científica e de comentários reflexivos escritos por universitários vinculados a programas de pós-graduação da região sudeste do Brasil. Esse objetivo geral desdobra-se em outros, específicos: (i) com base na investigação dos roteiros escritos de podcast, analisar procedimentos metadiscursivos (Maingueneau, 1997; Jubran 2005) adotados por escreventes universitários, considerando-se os diferentes modos de envolvimento (ou não) com a realização da atividade; (ii) com base na investigação dos comentários reflexivos, analisar a relação entre presumidos de gêneros do discurso (Corrêa, 2011) e presumidos das práticas discursivas (Volóchinov, 2019), considerando-se a projeção que o escrevente faz das relações de fronteira e constituição entre discurso científico e discurso da divulgação científica. O corpus da pesquisa é composto de 76 produções textuais, organizadas em dois subconjuntos: 38 roteiros de podcast de divulgação científica e 38 comentários reflexivos produzidos por pesquisadores em formação (graduados, mestrandos, mestres, doutorandos) no contexto de uma disciplina de pós-graduação. A análise empregada é de natureza qualitativa, com aplicação de critérios quantitativos na sistematização de regularidades. A hipótese de partida é a de que, longe de serem reduzidos a um processo de “adequação” de linguagem (na passagem de um discurso a outro), os procedimentos metadiscursivos empregados pelos escreventes apontam para regularidades enunciativas do discurso da divulgação científica na universidade e para presumidos dessa prática discursiva, num contexto marcado por forte demanda de popularização da pesquisa acadêmica. Os resultados apontam para alta ocorrência de procedimentos metadiscursivos que buscam marcar o diálogo do locutor com o interlocutor, organizar o discurso e simular um efeito de transparência dos sentidos, no diálogo com presumidos em torno da prática de divulgação científica que privilegiam um equilíbrio entre ciência e senso comum, um estilo de linguagem acessível e a atribuição de um lugar privilegiado ao interlocutor.Based on the theoretical-methodological assumptions of New Literacy Studies and French Discourse Analysis, this Master’s-level research aims to investigate the boundary and constitution relations between scientific discourse and the discourse of scientific dissemination in the process of producing scientific dissemination podcast scripts and reflective texts written by university students enrolled in graduate programs of the southeastern Brazil. This general objective unfolds into more specific aims: (i) based on the investigation of the written podcast scripts, to analyze metadiscursive procedures (Maingueneau, 1997; Jubran, 2005) adopted by university writers, considering the different degrees of engagement (or lack thereof) with the activity; (ii) based on the investigation of the reflective texts, to investigate the relationship between the assumed of discourse genres (Corrêa, 2011) and the assumed of discursive practices (Volóchinov, 2019), considering the writer's projection of the boundary and constitution relations between scientific discourse and the discourse of scientific dissemination. The research corpus consists of 76 textual productions, organized into two subsets: (i) 38 outreach podcast scripts and (ii) 38 reflective commentaries produced by early-degree (graduates, master’s students, master’s degree holders, and PhD students) in the context of a graduate-level course. The data analysis followed qualitative methods, with the application of quantitative criteria in the systematization of regularities. The working hypothesis is that, far from being a mere “adaptation” of language (from one discourse to another), the metadiscursive procedures employed by the writers point to enunciative regularities of science dissemination discourse within the university and to the assume of this discursive practice, in a context marked by a strong demand for the popularization of academic research. The results indicate a high occurrence of metadiscursive procedures aimed at marking the speaker’s dialogue with the interlocutor, organizing discourse, and simulating a “transparency” of meaning.     Bartonella spp., Coxiella burnetii and Rickettsia rickettsii in urban bats: molecular investigation of neglected zoonoses in Brazil

    In the last decade, cases of bartonellosis, Q fever and Brazilian spotted fever have been recorded in Brazil. Despite this, their occurrence is still underestimated. This study aimed to investigate Bartonella spp., Coxiella burnetii and Rickettsia rickettsii DNA in organs of urban bats collected from the São Paulo state, southeastern Brazil. Spleen and liver samples were collected from 102 bats from urban areas and evaluated by real-time PCR. Positive samples were submitted to conventional PCR and subsequent sequencing for species identification. In total, 3.9% of the bats were positive for Bartonella spp. in the real-time PCR and 2.9% were sequenced. Of the positive bats, two were Artibeus lituratus and two were Myotis nigricans. The sequences obtained were analyzed using the BLASTn, identified as B. koehlerae (n = 2) and B. clarridgeiae (n = 1) and deposited in Genbank. A close phylogenetic relationship was observed between the bat isolates in the study and global and Brazilian isolates from cats and humans. No sample in the study was positive for C. burnetii or R. rickettsii. The presence of Bartonella associated with infection of cats and humans in Brazilian bats reflects the neglected state of the disease in the country and the need for epidemiological surveillance actions.     An acidless microwave-assisted wet digestion of biological samples as a greener alternative: applications from COVID-19 monitoring to plant nanobiotechnology

    Sample preparation in an analytical sequence increases the number of errors, is highly time-consuming, and involves the manipulation of hazardous reagents. Therefore, when an improvement in an analytical method is required, the sample preparation step needs to be optimised or redesigned. Moreover, this step can involve significant toxic reagents and a high volume of waste. In that regard, this study proposes a new procedure based on microwave-assisted wet digestion combining two green strategies: a miniaturised system (with a few microlitres of volume) and the only use of hydrogen peroxide. Three biological samples (human serum, urine, and plant in vitro material) were chosen due to their high potential for disease monitoring, toxicological studies, and biotechnology applications. Several trace elements (Ca, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Se, and Zn) were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. For human serum and urine, a certified reference material was used to check for accuracy; the recovery ranged from 72% (Cd, ICP-MS) to 105% (Mg, ICP OES) for serum, while for urine, they varied from 82% (Ni, ICP-MS) to 122% (Zn, ICP-MS). For the soybean callus sample (in vitro plant material), a comparison between the proposed method and the acid digestion method was conducted to evaluate the accuracy, and the results agreed. The detection limits were 0.001–60 µg L−1 (lowest for Cd), thus demonstrating a suitable sensitivity. Moreover, the decomposition efficiency was demonstrated by determining the residual carbon, and a low amount was found in the final product digested (below 0.8% w v−1). A green metric approach was calculated for the proposed method, and according to AGREEprep software, it was found to be around 0.4. Finally, the method was applied to urine samples collected in patients with COVID-19 and soybean callus cultivated with silver nanoparticles.     Impact of Wine Polyphenols on the Inflammatory Profile of Induced Apical Periodontitis in Rats

    Introduction: This study evaluated the impact of dealcoholized red wine polyphenols on the inflammation and lesion volume associated with apical periodontitis (AP) in rats. Methods: Thirty-two Wistar rats receiving AP induction were arranged as follows: Control Group, Dealcoholized Red Wine Group (DRW), Red Wine Group, and Alcohol Group (ALC). Solutions were administered daily in a volume of 4.28 mL/kg via gavage for 45 days. Mandibles and maxillae were removed for histologic, immunohistochemical (IL-1β, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand, osteoprotegerin [OPG], and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase), and micro-computed tomography analyses of the AP site. A statistical analysis was performed with a significance level of 5%. Results: Inflammation and TRAP-positive cell count were similar for DRW and Red Wine Group, but lower when compared to Control Group and ALC (P < .001). The immunohistochemical expression of OPG was higher for DRW than for ALC (P < .05). A larger lesion volume was observed in ALC compared to other groups (P < .001).     Brazil nut organic substrate as a viable alternative for rooting in purple joyweed (Alternanthera brasiliana) cuttings

    Purple joyweed, Alternanthera brasiliana (L.) Kuntze is a plant belonging to Amaranthaceae, native to Brazil, and widely used in traditional medicine. In this species, seed maturation occurs non-uniformly rendering seedling production impractical. Hence, the objective of this work was to evaluate the rooting of cuttings in five substrates and three environmental conditions to optimize the propagation of joyweed. The substrate treatments considered coconut fiber (CF), decomposed Brazil nutshell (BN), organic compost (OC), commercial substrate (CS), and vermiculite (V). Cultivation environments (E) were split into intermittent misting (IF-E1), 50% shade nursery (SN-E2), and greenhouse (G-E3). The survival and rooting of the cuttings were significantly higher (p≤0.05) when BN was associated with G-E3 and CS associated with IF-E1 and SN-E2 environments, reaching 100±0.02% efficiency, when compared to all other environment x substrate combinations. There was no statistical difference in the interaction substrate × environment for final cutting height, number of leaves and side branches. When comparing the environments, the IF-E1 presented the best performance for the final cutting height (6.8±0.5 cm) and number of leaves (11.8±0.4). For the parameters fresh root mass, shoot and root dry mass a substrate × environment statistically significant interaction was found. The shoot fresh weight was best for IF-E1 combined with BN (3.1±02) and OC (3.3±0.1). Moreover, root fresh weight was superior in the combination IF-E1 × OC, i.e., 0.65±0.1 g, while root dry weight had the highest average for G-E3 × BN (99±14 mg) followed by SN-E2 × OC (86±19 mg) and IF-E1 × OC (59±14 mg). In terms of shoot dry weight, the substrate x factor did not show statistical significance, thus OC with 260±20 mg was the best substrate, and IF-E1 with 160±20 mg was the best environment. Chlorophyll a, b, and total were separately assessed between substrates and environments as no interaction between these factors was observed. The OC showed increased accumulation in all three chlorophyll analyses compared to the other substrates, while IF-E1 showed higher chlorophyll a and total compared to the other environments. It can be concluded that associating BN with G-E3 or OC and CS with IF-E1 provided better cutting survival and rooting for A. brasiliana in terms of final cutting height, and fresh and dry matter accumulation.     The complex cultural, infodemic and political battle in the city of Araraquara during the COVID-19 pandemic: 2020-2021

    A dissertação visa compreender o sentido e o significado dos discursos, e ideias produzidas e difundidas durante a pandemia de Sars-Covid-19 em Araraquara, município do Estado de São Paulo, que decretou diversas políticas públicas de distanciamento social e, sobretudo, lockdowns, no momento mais elevado de números de mortos pela pandemia. O objeto de investigação parte da hipótese de que diversas formas de pensamento mágico foram desenvolvidas por forças econômicas e políticas durante a pandemia, especialmente, após os decretos de lockdowns pela Prefeitura de Araraquara. Pretendemos utilizar a noção de pensamento mágico como expressão dos discursos anti-intelectuais, anticientíficos e irracionalistas difundidas nos meios de comunicação tradicionais e, sobretudo, nas redes sociais digitais. O objetivo da pesquisa é compreender como o processo de difusão do pensamento mágico ocorreu através dos jornais, blogs, revistas entre 2020 e 2021. Pretendemos, também, investigar como os agentes públicos tiveram que lidar com diversas manifestações do pensamento mágico por parte das pessoas, grupos sociais e instituições, colher depoimentos através de entrevistas diretas, para recompor o contexto histórico social mais amplo possível da pandemia no município. Pretende-se, assim, entender quais são as relações existentes entre o capitalismo contemporâneo desregulamentado econômica, política e culturalmente, as crises sociais e sanitárias, a difusão do pensamento mágico e a influência no comportamento e na mentalidade dos indivíduos atomizados e dos cidadãos espectadores da política.The dissertation aims to understand the meaning and significance of the discourses and ideas produced and disseminated during the Sars-Covid-19 pandemic in Araraquara, a city in the State of São Paulo, which decreed several public policies of social distancing and, above all, lockdowns, at the highest moment of death tolls from the pandemic. The object of investigation is based on the hypothesis that several forms of magical thinking were developed by economic and political forces during the pandemic, especially after the lockdown decrees by the City Council of Araraquara. We intend to use the notion of magical thinking as an expression of the anti-intellectual, anti-scientific and irrationalist discourses disseminated in the traditional media and, above all, in digital social networks. The objective of the research is to understand how the process of diffusion of magical thinking occurred through newspapers, blogs, magazines between 2020 and 2021. We also intend to investigate how public agents had to deal with various manifestations of magical thinking by people, social groups and institutions, collect testimonies through direct interviews, to recompose the broadest possible social historical context of the pandemic in the city. Thus, it is intended to understand what are the existing relations between the contemporary capitalism economically deregulated politically, politically and culturally, the social and health crises, the diffusion of magical thinking and the influence on the behavior and mentality of atomized individuals and citizens who are spectators of politics

    Genetic and phenotypic associations between age at first calving and scrotal circumference in Guzera beef cattle

    O melhoramento genético é uma ferramenta essencial para o aumento da produtividade e da eficiência reprodutiva na bovinocultura de corte, principalmente em raças zebuínas como o Guzerá, que apresenta rusticidade, dupla aptidão e boa adaptação às condições tropicais. Características como a idade ao primeiro parto (IPP) e a circunferência escrotal (CE) pode promover ganhos genéticos para a precocidade sexual e influenciar positivamente o desempenho reprodutivo de fêmeas. A CE, por sua facilidade de mensuração e alta herdabilidade, tem sido amplamente utilizada como critério de seleção, uma vez que apresenta correlação genética com características produtivas e reprodutivas, como volume testicular, qualidade seminal e idade à puberdade. A IPP é um dos principais indicadores da eficiência reprodutiva das fêmeas, sendo influenciada por fatores genéticos, ambientais e de manejo. Neste trabalho, foram utilizados dados fenotípicos e de pedigree de bovinos da raça Guzerá, com o objetivo de estimar parâmetros genéticos e fenotípicos de IPP e de CE, medida em diferentes idades, visando contribuir para o programa de melhoramento da raça. As análises foram realizadas por meio de modelo animal uni e multicaracterísticas, utilizando o método da máxima verossimilhança restrita para a estimação dos componentes de (co)variância, herdabilidade e correlações genética, fenotípica e de ambiente. Foram avaliadas a IPP e a CE ajustada para 365, 450 e 550 dias de idade (CE365, CE450 e CE550). As estimativas de herdabilidade foram de baixa a moderada magnitude, variando de 0,149(0,024) para IPP a 0,377(0,034) para CE450, indicando que ambas as características respondem à seleção. As correlações genéticas entre IPP e CE foram negativas, variando de -0,181(0,100) a -0,322(0,096), sugerindo que touros com maior CE tendem a produzir filhas mais precoces. As correlações fenotípicas também foram negativas, mas de baixa magnitude. As altas correlações genéticas entre CE365, CE450 e CE550, variando de 0,833(0,034) a 0,941(0,015), indicam que essas medidas são controladas em grande parte pelos mesmos genes, e que a seleção em qualquer uma das idades pode promover resposta genética em todas. A variância genética aditiva apresentou aumento proporcional com as idades estudadas, o que reforça a importância das avaliações em diferentes idades para a escolha de reprodutores. Dessa forma, os resultados obtidos evidenciam que a CE pode ser utilizada como critério de seleção indireta para favorecer a precocidade sexual em fêmeas da raça Guzerá e contribuir para o progresso genético da raça e maior eficiência reprodutiva nos sistemas de produção.Genetic improvement is an essential tool for increasing productivity and reproductive efficiency in beef cattle, especially in zebu breeds such as the Guzera, which are hardy, dual-purpose, and well-adapted to tropical conditions. Traits such as age at first calving (AFC) and scrotal circumference (SC) can promote genetic gains for sexual precocity and positively influence female reproductive performance. Due to its ease of measurement and high heritability, EC has been widely used as a selection criterion, as it presents a genetic correlation with productive and reproductive traits, such as testicular volume, seminal quality, and age at puberty. IPP is one of the main indicators of female reproductive efficiency and is influenced by genetic, environmental, and management factors. In this study, phenotypic and pedigree data from Guzera cattle were used to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters of IPP and EC, measured at different ages, to contribute to the breed improvement program. The analyses were performed using single- and multi-trait animal models, using the restricted maximum likelihood method to estimate the components of (co)variance, heritability, and genetic, phenotypic, and environmental correlations. The IPP and adjusted EC were evaluated for 365, 450 and 550 days of age (EC365, EC450 and EC550). Heritability estimates were of low to moderate magnitude, ranging from 0.149 (0.024) for IPP to 0.377 (0.034) for CE450, indicating that both traits respond to selection. Genetic correlations between IPP and CE were negative, ranging from -0.181 (0.100) to -0.322 (0.096), suggesting that bulls with higher CE tend to produce earlier daughters. Phenotypic correlations were also negative, but of low magnitude. The high genetic correlations between CE365, CE450, and CE550, ranging from 0.833 (0.034) to 0.941 (0.015), indicate that these measures are largely controlled by the same genes, and that selection at any of the ages can promote a genetic response at all. Additive genetic variance increased proportionally with the ages studied, reinforcing the importance of evaluations at different ages for selecting sires. Thus, the results demonstrate that EC can be used as an indirect selection criterion to promote sexual precocity in Guzera females and contribute to the breed's genetic progress and greater reproductive efficiency in production systems

    Disconnecting trapdoors: Phylogenomic analyses reveal evolutionary contrasts in trapdoor spiders with intercontinental distribution (Idiopidae, Idiopinae)

    Among Mygalomorphae spiders, the family Idiopidae is the second most diverse, consisting exclusively of trapdoor spiders and is divided into three subfamilies: Arbanitinae, Genysinae, and Idiopinae. The subfamily Idiopinae, distinguished mainly by anterior lateral eyes that project forward, includes 153 species across seven genera, distributed throughout South America, Africa, and parts of Asia. Within this subfamily, the genus Idiops includes the greatest diversity and is the only genus recorded in both the New and Old Worlds. Utilizing a taxon set from the Neotropical and Afrotropical regions, with specimens collected from 1947 to 2021, our study provides the first phylogenomic analysis of the family based on Ultraconserved Elements (UCEs). To assess the monophyly of Idiopinae and Idiops, as well as the relationships among genera within the subfamily, we conducted phylogenetic analyses employing maximum likelihood, Bayesian inference, and coalescent-based methods. The phylogenetic trees reveal that Idiopinae forms a monophyletic lineage, split into two geographically distinct groups: one with African species and the other with Neotropical species. We did not recover monophyly of the genus Idiops; Neotropical Idiops form a monophyletic lineage, while African Idiops species group with Titanidiops, forming a sister lineage to the remaining African Idiopinae. The relationship between the phylogenetic results obtained and the main morphological differences observed among the genera is discussed.     Conformal Regge theory predicts the existence of analytically continued conformal field theory data for complex spin. How could this work when there are so many more operators with large spin compared to small spin Using planar N=4 SYM as a test ground, we find a simple physical picture. Operators do organize themselves into analytic families but the continuation of the higher families have zeros in their structure operator product expansion constants for lower integer spins. They thus decouple.
