Effects of quercetin on mineralized dental tissues: A scoping review
Objective: This scoping review (SR) aimed to investigate the impact of quercetin on mineralized dental tissues intended to be used in preventive and restorative dentistry. Methods: This SR was conducted following the PRISMA-ScR statement. A comprehensive search was performed across databases for articles published up to March 2024. Eligible studies included in vitro and in situ studies and evaluating the potential therapeutic effects of quercetin on dental enamel and dentin. Data were extracted, and synthesis of study findings was conducted. Results: Out of the 2322 records screened, 22 studies were included in the review. Quercetin, in solution or into dental materials increased the bond strength to enamel and dentin. Additionally, quercetin also enhanced the bond strength of enamel after bleaching. Co-administration of quercetin with fluoride prevented erosive wear and inhibited the proteolytic activity in dentin more effectively than either agent alone. Hardness and modulus of elasticity was higher in dentin treated with quercetin compared to placebo. Reduction of nanoleakage at the composite-dentin interface was reduced in the presence of quercetin as a solution or incorporated into dental adhesives. Conclusions: Quercetin exhibits promising therapeutic effects on mineralized dental tissues, including remineralization and enhancement of bond strength. It shows potential as a multifunctional agent for improving the longevity and effectiveness of dental biomaterials, as well as in preventing erosion and dental caries. El uso de múltiples actores armados en la construcción de Sudán del Sur (2011-2020)
Esta tese investiga a construção do Estado do Sudão do Sul entre 2011 e 2020, com foco na atuação de múltiplos agentes armados e na lógica de pacificação associada ao legado colonial do país. O objetivo geral da pesquisa é compreender os fenômenos que possibilitaram o protagonismo de agentes da violência na construção do Estado sul-sudanês. Para isso, são delineados objetivos específicos que incluem a reflexão sobre conceitos fundamentais como Estado, pacificação e legado colonial, além de acompanhar o processo histórico de formação do Sudão do Sul. A metodologia adotada é qualitativa, utilizando uma abordagem analítica que combina revisão de literatura, análise documental e estudo de caso. A pesquisa examina a fragmentação das Forças Armadas e a presença de agentes armados locais, regionais e internacionais, como as forças da ONU e empresas de segurança privadas, que atuaram em diversas áreas, incluindo a reforma das Forças Armadas e o setor educacional, sendo o setor educacional um ponto chave na argumentação da manutenção da pacificação para esta tese. Os resultados obtidos revelam que a construção do Estado no Sudão do Sul é marcada por uma complexa interação entre a necessidade de pacificação e a influência de agentes armados, refletindo a lógica de um Estado moderno que busca se alinhar aos interesses hegemônicos do sistema internacional. A pesquisa conclui que a militarização e a violência são fenômenos centrais para o funcionamento do capitalismo na região, evidenciando, ao criticar o essencialismo estatal nas Relações Internacionais, a suporta fragilidade do processo de construção estatal.Esta tesis investiga la construcción del Estado sursudanés entre 2011 y 2020, centrándose en la actuación de múltiples agentes armados y en la lógica de pacificación asociada al legado colonial del país. Para ello, se trazan objetivos específicos que incluyen reflexionar sobre conceptos fundamentales como el Estado, la pacificación y el legado colonial, así como seguir el proceso histórico de formación de Sudán del Sur. La metodología adoptada es cualitativa, utilizando un enfoque analítico que combina una revisión bibliográfica, un análisis documental y un estudio de caso. La investigación examina la fragmentación de las Fuerzas Armadas y la presencia de actores armados locales, regionales e internacionales, como las fuerzas de la ONU y las empresas privadas de seguridad, que han actuado en diversos ámbitos, entre ellos la reforma de las Fuerzas Armadas y el sector educativo, siendo el sector educativo un punto clave en la argumentación del mantenimiento de la pacificación para esta tesis. La investigación concluye que la militarización y la violencia son fenómenos centrales para el funcionamiento del capitalismo en la región, destacando, al criticar el esencialismo estatal en las Relaciones Internacionales, la fragilidad del proceso de construcción del Estado.This thesis investigates the construction of the South Sudanese state between 2011 and 2020, focusing on the actions of multiple armed agents and the logic of pacification associated with the country's colonial legacy. The general aim of the research is to understand the phenomena that enabled agents of violence to play a leading role in the construction of the South Sudanese state. To this end, specific objectives are outlined, which include reflecting on fundamental concepts such as the state, pacification and the colonial legacy, as well as following the historical process of the formation of South Sudan. The methodology adopted is qualitative, using an analytical approach that combines literature review, documentary analysis and case study. The research examines the fragmentation of the Armed Forces and the presence of local, regional and international armed actors, such as UN forces and private security companies, who have acted in various areas, including the reform of the Armed Forces and the education sector, being education a key point in the argument for the maintenance of pacification for this thesis. The results show that state-building in South Sudan is marked by a complex interaction between the need for pacification and the influence of armed actors, reflecting the logic of a modern state that seeks to align itself with the hegemonic interests of the international system. The research concludes that militarization and violence are central phenomena for the functioning of capitalism in the region, highlighting, by criticizing state essentialism in International Relations, the fragility of the state-building process
Reorganization of the drainage network based on morphostructural controls in passive margins
The reorganization of drainage network and divide migration are fundamental to assessing the influence of tectonics, lithology, climate, base-level changes, and erosional processes on fluvial landscape evolution. However, most studies focus on tectonically active regions, leaving gaps in the understanding of these processes in intraplate settings. In South America, drainage reorganization along passive margin escarpments that drain inland under humid conditions remains poorly explored. The lack of comparative analyses between Neoproterozoic mobile belts and cratons in tectonically quiescent areas highlights the need for a comprehensive approach. In this context, this study investigates the evolution of drainage network and divide migration in a diverse morphostructural setting, considering tectonic legacies in intraplate zones. Using the Upper and Middle Grande River basin in Brazil as a study area, we applied classic morphometric parameters, identified knickpoints, analyzed longitudinal profiles, calculated normalized steepness index (ksn), and assessed drainage divide stability using the χ index. The results indicate that drainage reorganization and topographic rejuvenation are common in tectonically quiescent regions of the Brazilian Atlantic margin due to morphostructural controls and tectonic reactivations. Drainage networks of sub-basins within mobile belts exhibit greater instability than those in cratonic areas. Substrate resistance plays a key role in differential erosion and influences knickpoint formation and distribution. Although the knickpoints of resistant rocks slow down the propagation of erosional waves, differential lithologic resistance, layer inclination, and thickness result in varying degrees of persistence and long-term transient instabilities. Primary cutaneous cryptococcosis – History, concepts, clinical and therapeutic update
Cryptococcosis is a disease caused by fungi of the genus Cryptococcus, with the species Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii being recognized as pathogenic. Cutaneous cryptococcosis can be classified as “secondary”, developing from a previous systemic disease, or, on the contrary, “primary”, resulting from transcutaneous inoculation of the agent. It can also be classified as “disseminated cutaneous cryptococcosis”, when there is an associated systemic disease, or “localized”, when it is restricted to the skin. This article uses the term “primary cutaneous cryptococcosis” because it is the most widely used and already established in the literature. Historically, the first report of a possible case of primary cutaneous cryptococcosis (PCC) occurred in 1950 by Gancy WM and was published in the Archives of Dermatology and Syphilology. Subsequently, the rare and sporadic reports in the following decades were reviewed and reported in the 1985 publication by Baes & van Cutsen. However, the unequivocal acceptance of the existence of PCC as a distinct disease only occurred in 2003 with the publication by Neville S et al. of the French Cryptococcosis Study Group. The fundamental criterion established to consider it as PCC was the proven absence of systemic disease, whether pulmonary, in the CNS or other location at the time of diagnosis of the cutaneous condition, characterized by a single lesion and, mostly, in an exposed area. O único obstáculo à morte digna é a distanásia?
Este trabalho tem como objetivo demonstrar que o fenômeno da mistanásia é um obstáculo a ser superado para a concretização do direito à morte digna no Brasil. A discussão bioética tradicional sobre a morte digna, influenciada pela escola principialista norte-americana, direciona maior atenção a questões microéticas e emergentes. Contrapondo-se a essa visão, encontra-se a realidade social brasileira, marcada por verticalidades e processos históricos de exclusão social, fatores que provocam o fenômeno da morte miserável, em abandono. Considerando essa situação, a pesquisa discute a necessidade de expandir o debate sobre a morte digna para abranger questões macroéticas persistentes, a fim de desnudar a influência da exclusão social no processo de morte de populações vulneráveis. The Erbaugh Scale: validity and reliability of an instrument to assess children's aquatic competence
Aim: The aim of this study was to perform a cross-cultural validation of the Erbaugh Scale, developed to assess children's aquatic competence. Methods: The authors translated the Erbaugh Scale to Brazilian Portuguese and tested it in Brazil with respect to internal consistency as well as content, criterion, and construct validity. The translation was performed by four professionals, and the content validation was performed by three researchers and five swimming teachers. Two teachers participated in the reliability analysis. Moreover, 368 children, from 36 to 72 months of age, participated in the study. Results: The original Erbaugh Scale was reduced from 68 to 47 items distributed in six aquatic tasks. The items were clear and relevant, with satisfactory values for the total content validity coefficient (clarity = 0.87; relevance = 0.91) and for the percentage of agreement between the judges (clarity = 87%; relevance = 75%). Factor analysis indicated a unifactorial solution, and the factor loadings of the tasks presented satisfactory values (0.558-0.956). The Scale correctly predicted and identified the aquatic competence of different age groups and previous aquatic experience. Considering internal consistency, Cronbach's alpha was 0.91. The intraclass correlation coefficients for intra- and inter-rater reproducibility were excellent (0.92-1.00), and there were no intra- and inter-rater differences (p > 0.05). Synthesis, Characterization, and Osteogenic Ability of Fibrillar Polycaprolactone Scaffolds Containing Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticles
Polymer-based scaffolds for bone regeneration aim to mimic the structure and function of the collagen-rich extracellular matrix. Hydroxyapatite incorporated into these biomaterials improves their mechanical and biological properties due to its bioactive osteoconductive nature. The objectives of this study are to synthesize and characterize polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds containing hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HAn) at 1, 2.5, 5, and 7% concentrations and to determine their cytocompatibility and osteogenic potential. Fiber thickness (n = 240) and interfibrillar space (n = 8) of PCL scaffolds were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The PCL scaffolds were evaluated concerning their thermal degradation (TGA), calcium release, and hydrophilicity (WCA). Preosteoblasts were seeded on PCL scaffolds and assessed regarding their viability (AlamarBlue, n = 8), collagen synthesis (SR, n = 8), total protein synthesis (TP, n = 8), alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP, n = 8), deposition of mineralization nodules (MN, n = 8), and cell adhesion (fluorescence microscopy). The data analyses of the biomaterials, including TGA, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), were interpreted descriptively. The quantitative data were statistically analyzed (α = 5%). Scaffolds without HAn exhibited thicker fibers. The higher incorporation of HAn in the PCL scaffolds increased the interfibrillar spaces and resulted in greater P and Ca peaks (p < 0.05), as well as broader peaks representing the P-O group (FTIR). TGA demonstrated that PCL scaffold degradation was inversely proportional to their HAn concentration. Higher percentages of cell viability were observed with the incorporation of HAn. ALP activity increased in cells seeded onto PCL scaffolds containing 2.5% HAn. Deposition of MN was directly proportional to the amount of HAn incorporated. Dance in physical education: overcoming prejudice and celebrating diversity
A presente trabalho visou atender às problemáticas identificadas na escola em que a pesquisa foi realizada. O preconceito é uma atitude presente nas aulas de Educação Física, especialmente quando os conhecimentos de Dança são tematizados. Diante dessas questões, este estudo objetivou compreender o desenvolvimento de uma unidade didática sobre Dança nas aulas de Educação Física escolar, analisando seu impacto na percepção e na participação dos/as alunos/as. Além disso, teve como objetivos específicos investigar os motivos que levam alunos/as a terem atitudes e comentários preconceituosos sobre a Dança na escola; propor estratégias pedagógicas para a tematização da Dança nas aulas de Educação Física escolar; apresentar para a comunidade escolar possibilidades de superação de paradigmas e preconceitos relacionados à Dança. Para tanto, realizou-se uma pesquisa do tipo qualitativa, de natureza aplicada, fundamentada na abordagem da Pesquisa-Ação (Thiollent, 1986), que envolve a participação ativa de todos/as os/as envolvidos/as no processo investigativo. O estudo contou com a participação de uma turma do 5º ano do ensino fundamental, composta por 26 crianças, da EMEF Prof. Alexandrino da Silveira Bueno, localizada na cidade de Barueri/SP. Para o registro dessa participação, foi utilizado o Diário de Campo, de autoria do professor-pesquisador, durante as rodas de conversa e as aulas. Os dados da pesquisa foram analisados por meio da Análise Temática, permitindo a identificação de padrões e reflexões sobre o ensino da Dança na Educação Física. Os resultados mostraram que a tematização da Dança nas aulas contribuiu significativamente para ampliar a compreensão dos/as alunos/as sobre essa expressão cultural, promovendo reflexões sobre preconceitos e estereótipos de gênero e possibilitando uma maior aceitação e envolvimento nas atividades propostas. Além disso, observou-se que o protagonismo estudantil, por meio da busca por referências, da elaboração de coreografias e da organização do Sarau, fortaleceu o engajamento e o senso de pertencimento da turma. Por fim, conclui-se que o ensino da Dança na Educação Física escolar não apenas promove o desenvolvimento motor e expressivo dos/as estudantes, mas também se revela uma ferramenta pedagógica essencial para a construção de um ambiente escolar mais inclusivo e respeitoso, combatendo preconceitos e valorizando a diversidade cultural.This study aimed to address the challenges identified at the school where the research was conducted. Prejudice is a recurring issue in Physical Education classes, particularly when Dance is the subject of instruction. In light of these concerns, this research sought to understand the development of a teaching unit on Dance within school-based Physical Education classes, analyzing its impact on students’ perceptions and participation. The specific objectives of this study were: to investigate the reasons behind students' prejudiced attitudes and remarks regarding Dance in school; to propose pedagogical strategies for incorporating Dance into Physical Education classes; and to present the school community with possibilities for overcoming paradigms and prejudices related to Dance. To achieve these aims, a qualitative and applied research methodology was adopted, grounded in the Action Research approach (Thiollent, 1986), which emphasizes the active participation of all individuals involved in the investigative process. The study was conducted with a fifth-grade class consisting of 26 children enrolled at EMEF Prof. Alexandrino da Silveira Bueno, located in the municipality of Barueri, São Paulo. Data were recorded in a Field Journal maintained by the teacher-researcher during classroom discussions and instructional activities. The research data were analyzed using Thematic Analysis, allowing for the identification of recurring patterns and meaningful reflections on the teaching of Dance in Physical Education. The results demonstrated that incorporating Dance into the curriculum significantly enhanced students’ understanding of this cultural expression. It encouraged reflection on prejudice and gender stereotypes, fostering greater acceptance and active participation in the proposed activities. Furthermore, the study revealed that student agency—through the search for artistic references, choreography development, and the organization of a school-wide cultural event (Sarau)—contributed to increased engagement and a stronger sense of belonging within the group. In conclusion, the integration of Dance into Physical Education not only supports students’ motor and expressive development but also serves as a vital pedagogical tool for fostering a more inclusive and respectful school environment—one that actively combats prejudice and affirms cultural diversity
Bifurcations and collective states of Kuramoto oscillators with higher-order interactions and rotational symmetry breaking
We study a network of identical Kuramoto oscillators with higher-order interactions that also break the rotational symmetry of the system. To gain analytical insights into this model, we use the Watanabe-Strogatz Ansatz, which allows us to reduce the dimensionality of the original system of equations. The study of stability and bifurcations of the reduced system reveals a codimension two Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation and several other associated bifurcations. Such analysis is corroborated by numerical simulations of the associated Kuramoto system, which, in turn, unveils a variety of collective behaviors such as synchronized motion, oscillation death, chimeras, incoherent states, and traveling waves. Analysis of tissue response and biodegradation rate of hyaluronic acid-based fillers in the dermis of Wistar rats: in vivo test - hyaluronic acid-based fillers
O ácido hialurônico (AH) é o glicosaminoglicano não sulfatado mais abundante na matriz extracelular (MEC) que constitui a derme. Sua produção por biotecnologia oferece vantagens como a obtenção de um produto quimicamente puro, reprodutível e em quantidades ilimitadas e, devido à sua biocompatibilidade, biodegradabilidade e propriedades regenerativas, o AH é amplamente utilizado na engenharia de tecidos e medicina regenerativa, em aplicações biomédicas e estéticas. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar e comparar, por meio de análises histomorfométricas e de perfil inflamatório, a resposta tecidual e taxa de biodegradação de um novo AH na derme de ratos. Para isso, foram utilizados 40 animais, sendo distribuídos em 2 grupos testes (AZ e PT, n=5) e estes receberam 2 hidrogéis a serem testados: Teste (PT-T), um novo hidrogel de AH com novo reticulante, e Teste-Celulose (AZ-TC), novo hidrogel de AH com novo reticulante associado à celulose. As comparações do desempenho desse produto foram realizadas com um hidrogel disponível e consagrado no mercado, Juvéderm – Allergan® (AZ-J e PT-J), como controle positivo, e solução salina (PT-S) e celulose (AZ-C) como controle negativo. A eutanásia aconteceu após períodos de 3, 7, 30 e 60 dias (n=10). A análise triplo-cego foi realizada de forma que o aplicador dos hidrogéis e o patologista que realizou a análise histológica e a estatística para cada produto aplicado e analisado foram diferentes. Os resultados revelaram que os hidrogéis Teste e Teste-Celulose exibiram biocompatibilidade e eficácia similares ao controle positivo, com taxas de degradação controladas (p<0,001 e p=0,223) e capacidade promissora de modular a resposta inflamatória (p=0,010 e p<0,001). Conclui-se que os novos hidrogéis têm potencial para aplicações em engenharia de tecidos e medicina regenerativa, como cicatrização de feridas e aumento de tecidos moles. No entanto, estudos adicionais são necessários para caracterizar detalhadamente o novo reticulante e otimizar seu desempenho clínico.Hyaluronic acid (HA) is the most abundant non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan in the extracellular matrix (ECM) that constitutes the dermis. Its production by biotechnology offers advantages such as obtaining a chemically pure, reproducible product in unlimited quantities and, due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability and regenerative properties, HA is widely used in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, in biomedical and aesthetic applications. This study aimed to evaluate and compare, through histomorphometric and inflammatory profile analyses, the tissue response and biodegradation rate of a new HA in the dermis of rats. For this, 40 animals were used, distributed in 2 test groups (AZ and PT, n=5) and these received 2 hydrogels to be tested: Test (PT-T), a new HA hydrogel with a new crosslinker, and Test-Cellulose (AZ-TC), a new HA hydrogel with a new crosslinker associated with cellulose. The performance comparisons of this product were performed with a commercially available and well-established hydrogel, Juvéderm – Allergan® (AZ-J and PT-J), as a positive control, and saline solution (PT-S) and cellulose (AZ-C) as a negative control. Euthanasia occurred after periods of 3, 7, 30 and 60 days (n=10). The triple-blind analysis was performed so that the hydrogel applicator and the pathologist who performed the histological analysis and statistics for each product applied and analyzed were different. The results revealed that the Test and Test-Cellulose hydrogels exhibited similar biocompatibility and efficacy to the positive control, with controlled degradation rates (p<0.001 and p=0.223 respectively) and promising ability to modulate the inflammatory response (p=0.010 and p<0.001). It is concluded that the new hydrogels have potential for applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, such as wound healing and soft tissue augmentation.
