    Quasi-static and dynamic compressive behaviour of additively manufactured Menger fractal cube structures

    This paper presents the first-ever investigation of Menger fractal cubes' quasi-static compression and impact behaviour. Menger cubes with different void ratios were 3D printed using polylactic acid (PLA) with dimensions of 40 mm × 40 mm × 40 mm. Three different orders of Menger cubes with different void ratios were considered, namely M1 with a void ratio of 0.26, M2 with a void ratio of 0.45, and M3 with a void ratio of 0.60. Quasi-static Compression tests were conducted using a universal testing machine, while the drop hammer was used to observe the behaviour under impact loading. The fracture mechanism, energy efficiency and force-time histories were studied. With the structured nature of the void formation and predictability of the failure modes, the Menger geometry showed some promise compared to other alternatives, such as foams and honeycombs. With the increasing void ratio, the Menger geometries show force-displacement behaviour similar to hyper-elastic materials such as rubber and polymers. The third-order Menger cubes showed the highest energy absorption efficiency compared to the other two geometries in this study. The findings of the present work reveal the possibility of using additively manufactured Menger geometries as an energy-efficient system capable of reducing the transmitting force in applications such as crash barriers

    Radial arterial catheters (RAC) are used extensively across critical care settings (Anesthesia, Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine) for continuous hemodynamic monitoring, allowing for immediate adjustments in vasopressor therapies and blood collection. Radial catheter failures are an ongoing significant issue for critical care clinicians with reported incidences at almost 25%. Common complications include loss of function, lack of blood return, poor quality waveforms and dislodgement, posing potential patient risks, and sudden loss of intra-arterial monitoring frequently requires prompt replacement. Contemporary research and technological improvements have highlighted several concepts to enhance the approach of RAC insertion and management while reducing immediate and late complications. The authors have prioritized the following 10 “best practice” aspects that may improve overall device function and reliability.</p

    “Jumping on the Blood Pressure Bandwagon”: Nurse, GP, and Patient Perspectives of a General Practice Nurse-Led Hypertension Management Intervention

    To explore the perceptions and experiences of general practice nurses, general practitioners, and patients who participated in a nurse-led intervention to improve blood pressure control. Given the impact of hypertension on rates of premature death and disability, it is important that interventions be evaluated to reduce blood pressure. A key component of such evaluation is understanding the experiences of participants and clinicians. Understanding these experiences can provide insight into acceptability and feasibility that informs future research and implementation. Qualitative descriptive study within a mixed methods project. Semi-structured interviews were conducted post-intervention with six patients, five nurses, and three general practitioners. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The COREQ checklist guided reporting. Three themes around the need for change, navigating change, and sustaining change were revealed. In highlighting the need for change, participants recognized that it was time to actively work toward improved blood pressure control. In navigating change, general practice nurses were perceived as ideally placed to communicate risks around uncontrolled blood pressure and support lifestyle change. The final theme, sustaining change revealed the feasibility of the intervention in practice, however, clinician participants identified that appropriate funding is required to ensure sustainability. Nurse-led intervention to improve blood pressure control in general practice is feasible in practice and acceptable to patients. This highlights an opportunity for nurses to play a more proactive role in hypertension management within general practice. To ensure sustainability, however, issues such as funding, teamwork, and collaboration need to be addressed.     In 1922, self-exiled English novelist D.H. Lawrence arrived on Australian shores with his German wife Frieda. Travelling by steamboat from Italy to New Mexico via Sri Lanka, the pair disembarked in Sydney to spend a bit of time rediscovering their land legs. Lawrence was already a well-known writer by this point, with works such as Sons and Lovers and The Rainbow having been published in the decade before. However, this is to say little of his and Frieda’s financial situation.Passing through Sydney’s famed headlands, the pair held in their possession a modest sum of 50 pounds, and after handing over four of those pounds for two nights’ accommodation in the harbour city, it became evident they’d be needing to find cheaper lodging if they were to spend any significant time in “the continent of the kangaroo”.Boarding the 2pm train from Central Station and heading south, they arrived in the seaside township of Thirroul (now a northern suburb of Wollongong) and took up residence at “Wyewurk”, a Californian-style bungalow overlooking McCauley’s Beach previously leased by a family of 11 children. It was here, writing at the breakneck pace of some 3,000 words a day, that the child-free Lawrence penned his eighth novel, Kangaroo, in a mere six weeks.I’m ambivalent about Kangaroo. It contains passages as technically and poetically brilliant as any to have been jotted down in English prose before or since, its psychological insights are convincing and artfully understated, while its representation of the Australian landscape remains as evocative today as it was at the time of publication when it helped free a cohort of Australian writers from the anxiety of European influence under which they’d been toiling.As far as storytelling goes though, Kangaroo, with its clandestine right-wing army forever marking time and making plans, does less to excite my imagination. If I’m being completely honest, for all its virtuosity it probably would have ended up in the great pile of perennially bookmarked classics I was determined to enjoy but never quite got around to finishing were it not for the special place it holds in the oeuvre, and heart, of legendary Australian artist Garry Shead.</p

    Environmental consequences of interacting effects of changes in stratospheric ozone, ultraviolet radiation and climate: UNEP Environmental Effects Assessment Panel, Update 2024

    This 2024 Assessment Update by the Environmental Effects Assessment Panel (EEAP) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) addresses the interacting effects of changes in stratospheric ozone, solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and climate on the environment and human health. These include new modelling studies that confirm the benefits of the Montreal Protocol in protecting the stratospheric ozone layer and its role in maintaining a stable climate, both at low and high latitudes. We also provide an update on projected levels of solar UV radiation during the 21st century. Potential environmental consequences of climate intervention scenarios are also briefly discussed, illustrating the large uncertainties of, for example, Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI). Modelling studies predict that, although SAI would cool the Earth’s surface, other climate factors would be affected, including stratospheric ozone depletion and precipitation patterns
